Mere Mortals

nA quick estimate of the assets found by the CBI, would easily run to over Rs 12 crores (the present value may be higher). Why does the official media mention only 3.6 crores. Whether it is cash or readily encashable real estate how does it matter ?
nThe minister took an oath under the Constitution and flag of India for honesty and integrity. Clearly, that oath has been violated. This by itself calls for action and punishment.
nMost importantly, why blame only Sukh Ram. Is it that only he wanted money and has taken money and no other minister has or never will take money? If we believe that other ministers of may also take money, then, above everything else it is important to evolve a systems by which ministers cannot make money. The first step in this direction would be to take away the discretionary powers of ministers. If a minister gives or awards a contract to a particular person over and above others, then he should much be required to explain the reasons and justifications for his action to technical experts in the ministry just as anyone else in the government is required to do.
This alone will curb corruption to a large extent. The UF government has taken the first step in this direction, by abolishing discretionary quotas for ministers.
After all the Constitution of India does not, directly or indirectly, provide that a minister, simply by virtue of being a minister, is much above ordinary citizens or more knowledgeable, capable and far sighted than the rest of his ministry put together. So why allow him to act and behave in such a way.
