West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said if there is proper consensus on seat sharing among anti-BJP parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party will not be able to retain power at the Centre. On the BJP's win in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, she said there was nothing to rejoice for the saffron party as the vote margins were slim. Speaking at the West Bengal assembly, Banerjee said the BJP won more seats than the Congress in Rajasthan because of a split in votes among opponents. "It's not the people's defeat, it's the Congress' defeat. (They) lost for wrong policies. A party had sought six seats. If they were given at least three seats, this problem would not have happened. BJP won at least 70 seats for no seat-sharing there," Banerjee told the West Bengal assembly. The Trinamool Congress supremo further said, "I was just looking at the results. In the election, Congress got around 39 per cent of votes and they (BJ

The Congress on Monday said its performance in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh was disappointing but it was within "striking distance" of the BJP going by the vote share. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the good vote share of the party in these states is a reason for hope and revival. "It is true that the performance of the Indian National Congress in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan was disappointing and far below our own expectations. "But the vote shares tell a story of a Congress that is not very behind the BJPin fact, it is within striking distance. This is the reason for hope and revival," Ramesh said in a post on X. Giving details, he said in Chhattisgarh while the BJP's vote share was 46.3 percent, that of the Congress was 42.2 percent. In Madhya Pradesh, he said the BJP had a vote share of 48.6 percent while the Congress had 40.4 percent. In Rajasthan, Ramesh said while the BJP had 41.7 percent vote share, the Congress had 39.5 percent.
It seems the promises made by the BJP, which it promoted as 'Modi ki Guarantee 2023', worked in its favour as it emerged victorious in the tribal-dominated state
The Congress' hopes of the Bharat Jodo Yatra paying dividends in the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls have been dashed with the Bharatiya Janata Party winning 17 of the 21 seats from which the Rahul Gandhi-led yatra passed. The BJP on Sunday cruised to a two-thirds majority in Madhya Pradesh assembly, winning as many as 163 of the 230 seats in the House, leaving the Congress a distant second at 66. Between November 23 and December 4 last year, the Bharat Jodo Yatra covered 380 kilometres through six districts of MP's Malwa-Nimar region, namely Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Indore, Ujjain and Agar Malwa, which cumulatively have 21 seats. In 2018, the BJP won 14 of these seats, while the Congress emerged victorious on seven. This time, the BJP bettered its tally to 17, reducing the Congress to four seats. BJP's Archana Chitnis won Burhanpur and Manju Dadu won Nepanagar assembly segments in Burhanpur district. The Burhanpur seat was won in 2018 by Independent candidate Surendra Singh She
A string of populist promises, including the extension of the free ration scheme announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Mahadev betting app issue and the Hindutva card are among key factors that catapulted BJP to power in Chhattisgarh after five years with the saffron party crossing the 50-mark for the first time since the formation of the state in 2000. The Congress failed to repeat its 2018 performance when it had won 68 out of 90 constituencies and had to contend with just 35 seats. The BJP proved the exit polls, which had given a slight edge to the Congress, wrong by improving its tally from 15 seats to 54 in the 90-member assembly. The scale of the Congress' defeat can be gauged from the fact that nine out of 13 ministers in the Bhupesh Baghel cabinet bit dust. Baghel (Patan constituency) and ministers Kawasi Lakhma (Konta), Umesh Patel (Kharsia) and Anila Bhendia (Dondi Lohara) managed to withstand the BJP wave.
