Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday criticised the government after several people protesting at India Gate against the worsening air quality were detained for assembling without permission and asked why citizens peacefully demanding clean air were being treated like "criminals". Gandhi called for decisive action on air pollution "right now, instead of attacking citizens asking for clean air". He made the remarks on X in response to a post by environmentalist Vimlendu Jha, who said that protesters were "taken away" and "shoved in a bus". Scores of people, including parents and environmental activists, staged a protest at India Gate on Sunday against the worsening air quality in the national capital. According to police, several protesters were detained for assembling without permission. Gandhi said, "The right to clean air is a basic human right. The right to peaceful protest is guaranteed by our Constitution. Why are citizens who have been peacefully demanding clean air being

Additionally, three sections of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to be deployed at three critical polling stations in Silsury near the Bangladesh border have also left for their destination on Sunday, he said. Polling officials for the remaining 35 polling stations will leave for their destination on Monday, he said. Meanwhile, political parties were busy making the last pitch to woo the voters on Sunday. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday alleged that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in an attempt to cover up "vote theft" and institutionalise it. Gandhi arrived in Pachmarhi hill town in Narmadapuram on Saturday to take part in the Madhya Pradesh district Congress presidents' training camp. "Vote theft is an issue and SIR now, it is about covering it up and institutionalising the system," the Congress MP claimed while talking to reporters here. The Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters' list commenced in nine states and three Union territories on November 4. Gandhi said he believes that like Haryana, "vote theft" took place in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh too. "A few days ago, I gave a presentation on Haryana, and I clearly saw that vote theft was taking place...25 lakh votes were stolen, 1 in 8 votes were stolen," he alleged. "After looking at that, after looking at the data, I belie

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday rubbished Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah's predictions of the NDA's victory in the Bihar assembly polls, pointing out that their 400 plus claim in the Lok Sabha elections was way off the mark. He spoke to PTI Video in Gaya, where he insisted that "all was not well" in the BJP-led coalition, as there were doubts that Nitish Kumar, the JD(U) president and longest-serving chief minister, would be backed for another term in office. "The Prime Minister can say anything. Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, they kept saying 400 paar," said Kharge, pointing to the performance of the BJP in last year's general elections, when it fell short of a majority and became dependent on allies like JD(U) and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's TDP for survival in power. When his attention was drawn to the fact that Shah, the most trusted aide of Modi and the BJP's principal strategist, has been claiming that the
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday called the BJP-led Maharashtra government a dagabaz sarkar (treacherous government), accusing it of betraying farmers. He said the BJP and its allies have no right to chant the national song Vande Mataram' when they are looting Bharat Mata, referring to the controversial Pune land deal involving a firm linked to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's son Parth. The Sena (UBT) chief was speaking after visiting Patoda village in Partur tehsil of Jalna district on the last day of his four-day tour of the Marathwada region to take stock of the devastation caused by torrential rains this monsoon. Farmers suffered heavy losses due to intense rains and floods, yet the government's relief measures remained slow and inadequate, he alleged. Farmers are not getting fair prices for their produce. The government announced procurement at MSP (minimum support price), but the purchasing centres started (operating) very late, Thackeray said. The forme
Pooh-poohing the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh on Saturday claimed that the BJP-led government found only 2,400 infiltrators in 11 years while 88,000 such people had been sent back during the UPA rule. The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister was referring to the assertion that the SIR was intended to weed out infiltrators. "The BJP is shouting 'infiltrators' in the Bihar assembly polls, but what is the fact? 88,000 people who were not citizens of the country were sent back from 2004 to 2014 during the two terms of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre," Singh told reporters. "But in the last 11 years of the BJP, only 2,400 infiltrators have been found. This means they have not even found three per cent of the number of infiltrators we found in the UPA regime," the Rajya Sabha member said. Despite this, the BJP always rakes up the issue of infiltrators, he said. The SIR exercise started in Madhya .
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday alleged that after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he "destroyed all constitutional and independent institutions in the country" and made them, including the Election Commission, subordinate to the central government. Claiming that the BJP has proved itself to be "experts in vote theft", the CM accused the saffron party of coming to power at the centre and in several states through such means. He was speaking after announcing that the Congress party has gathered more than 1.12 crore signatures against 'vote theft' in the state as part of its signature campaign. "We call BJP experts in lying; they are not just experts in lying, lies are their home deity. They are not just limited to it. They have proved that they are experts in vote theft. Vote theft has become their profession," Siddaramaiah said. "BJP in recent years, through vote theft, have won Lok Sabha and Assembly polls and has come to power at the Centre and in several .
The attack on the special status of Jammu and Kashmir did not start in 2019 but in 2015 when the PDP formed a government with the BJP, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Saturday. "The BJP has caused maximum damage to Jammu and Kashmir. Everything was snatched from us. The map has not remained, our identity under threat and special status gone," Abdullah said, addressing an election meeting in Mirgund of Budgam assembly segment. He accused the opposition PDP of facilitating the BJP's plans. "In the 2014 elections, late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter went from door to door on the plank of keeping the BJP out. The people voted for them in numbers, but soon after the elections, they (PDP) joined hands with the BJP," the NAC leader said. Bypolls are being held in Budgam assembly segment on November 11 as Abdullah had vacated the seat last year, retaining Ganderbal seat after winning both segments in the 2024 assembly elections. The attack on the special status of Jammu and
