A major fire broke out in a foam mattress manufacturing factory located on the Ambala-Chandigarh national highway near the city Thursday, police said. No casualty was reported in the incident, they said. The entire premises of the factory and the godowns containing rows of finished products were gutted in the fire, police said. Twelve fire-tenders from Ambala and neighbouring areas were pressed into service to douse the flames. The cause of the fire was being ascertained, they said. The smoke of chemicals and other materials used in foam mattress manufacturing engulfed the surrounding areas which created panic among residents of the adjoining localities, police said.
Six persons, who were returning to their home in Sirsa after celebrating Eid, were killed when their vehicle rammed into a truck near Haryana's Jind on Thursday, a police official said. A magnitude 4.3 earthquake shook parts of Banaskantha and adjoining districts in north Gujarat Wednesday night, though no damage to property or casualties were reported. Data released by the Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research said tremors were recorded at 10.31 pm. The epicenter of the quake was 31 km North East of Palanpur town in Banaskantha district. People came out of houses in Banaskantha, Mehsana and Sabarkantha areas after feeling the tremors. Six people have died and dozens are missing after heavy rains triggered a series of landslides in eastern Uganda's mountainous Bududa district, government officials and the Red Cross said on Wednesday. The Red Cross said that around 50 people were believed missing after the landslides on Tuesday night in the foothills of Mount Elgon -- an extinct volcano with five major peaks. Uganda's Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness Hillary Onek told journalists in Kampala that "the landslide killed six people". "There were several other small landslides. Groundwater contamination is 12.7 times more likely in villages practising open-defecation as compared to those declared open-defecation free (ODF) under the Swachh Bharat Mission, a UN study revealed on Wednesday. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) report analysed 752 samples from 12 ODF and and an equal number of non-ODF villages across West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha. According to the study, soil and food in the non-ODF villages were 1.1 and 2.16 times respectively more likely to be contaminated with human faeces in comparison to ODF villages. It also revealed that in non-ODF villages, piped water was 2.40 times and household water was 2.48 times more likely at risk of faecal contamination. In Bihar, the groundwater in the non-ODF villages was 35.7 times more likely to get contaminated. Five persons were killed Wednesday when the car in which they were traveling jumped the divider and hit a tempo coming from the opposite direction near Kharel in Navsari district of Gujarat, police said. The victims were heading for Surat when the accident took place on the national highway Wednesday morning, said an official of Gandevi police station. As the driver of the car lost control and it jumped the divider and collided with the tempo, the victims, all in their twenties, were killed on the spot, he said. It took a lot of efforts to pull out the bodies from the mangled remains of the car, the police official said. The victims were yet to be identified, he said. The bodies were sent to a hospital at Gandevi, he added.
