Here's why honey bee colonies are in danger

Pesticides, diseases, poor nutrition and habitat loss are threatening honey bee colonies around the world. But according to a recent study, one threat stands well above the others, a parasitic mite, Varroa destructor, which specialises in attacking honey bees. While it remains a well-known fact that varroa mites feed on blood, like many of their mite and tick cousins, the researchers have now suggests that varroa mites instead have a voracious appetite for a honey bee organ called the fat body, which serves many of the same vital functions carried out by the human liver, while also storing food and contributing to bees' immune systems. The research was published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."Bee researchers often refer to three Ps: parasites, pesticides and poor nutrition. Many studies have shown that varroa is the biggest issue. But when compromised by varroa, colonies are also more susceptible to the other two," said Samuel Ramsey, lead researcher of the ...

Study finds stroke drug could prevent Alzheimer's disease

Researchers have found that a drug which could treat stroke may also prevent Alzheimer's disease. The University of Southern California findings have been published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. The study shows that the genetically engineered protein 3K3A-APC protects the brains of mice with Alzheimer's-like symptoms, reducing the buildup of toxic peptides and preventing memory loss.3K3A-APC is a genetically modified version of a human blood protein called activated protein C, which reduces inflammation and protects both neurons and the cells that line the walls of blood vessels from death and degeneration. 3K3A-APC has beneficial effects in various mouse models of disease, including traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis. About 54 pc of points of sale of tobacco have no visible health warning: Study

About 54 per cent of points of sale of tobacco have no visible health warning and nearly half of the vendors around schools sell tobacco products, a new study has revealed. Claiming that multinational tobacco companies sell their products around schools, the study titled 'Tiny Targets' by NGOs Voluntary Health Association of India and Consumer Voice termed it a "very systematic and widespread" ruse to get young people addicted to tobacco. As many as 243 schools and 487 points of sale were closely surveyed during this study in 20 cities. The study claimed that despite prohibition of sale of tobacco products near educational institutes, numerous shops, vendors and points of sale resort to selling and advertising tobacco products around schools. It also claimed that vendors sale tobacco products on discount and distribute free samples to attract customers. "Investigators documented that of the 225 tobacco points of sale observed, 91 per cent of displays were at one metre - a child's eye .

Fasting may help keep age-related diseases at bay: Study

Fasting can boost the body's metabolism and help protect against age-related diseases, a study has found. The circadian clock operates within the body and its organs as intrinsic time-keeping machinery to preserve homeostasis in response to the changing environment. While food is known to influence clocks in peripheral tissues, it was unclear, until now, how the lack of food influences clock function and ultimately affects the body. "We discovered fasting influences the circadian clock and fasting-driven cellular responses, which together work to achieve fasting-specific temporal gene regulation," said Paolo Sassone-Corsi, a professor at University of California, Irvine in the US. "Skeletal muscle, for example, appears to be twice as responsive to fasting as the liver," said Sassone-Corsi. The research, published in the journal Cell Reports, was conducted using mice, which were subjected to 24-hour periods of fasting. While fasting, researchers noted the mice exhibited a reduction in .

Dogs may help diabetes patients regulate blood sugar: Study

Trained dogs have the potential to vastly improve the quality of life of people living with Type 1 diabetes by helping them regulate their blood sugar in a non-invasive way, according to a study. The research, published in the journal PLOS One, found that on average trained dogs alerted their owners to 83 per cent of hypoglycaemic episodes in over 4,000 hypo- and hyper-glycaemic episodes that were examined. A hypoglycaemic episode is where blood sugar drops dangerously low and if left untreated, can lead to unconsciousness or even death. The findings by researchers at the University of Bristol in the UK confirm that alert dogs can help Type 1 diabetes patients regulate their blood sugars in a non-invasive way and avoid the risks of hypoglycaemic episodes and hyperglycaemia. "We already know from previous studies that patients' quality of life is vastly improved by having a medical detection dog," said Nicola Rooney from the University of Bristol. "However, to date, evidence has come ..
