Russia-Ukraine talks planned for Abu Dhabi may change venue: Zelenskyy

US-brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine expected later this week may take place in Switzerland or Turkey if a planned meeting in Abu Dhabi is not possible due to the war in the Middle East, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday. He also noted that Western countries have given no indication so far that their delivery to Kyiv of vital air defence missiles could be disrupted by commitments to Middle East defence. US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 are continuing. But the American and Israeli attacks on Iran, and the response of Iran and Iranian-backed militias firing missiles at Israel and Arab states, may divert international attention from the 4-year-old conflict in Europe. "Due to hostilities, as of today we cannot confirm (the talks) will take place in Abu Dhabi," Zelenskyy told reporters in a WhatsApp chat. He said last week that the United Arab Emirates capital would be this week's ...

China refutes reports of selling CM-302 supersonic missiles to Iran

China on Monday denied reports of finalising a deal with Iran to sell CM-302 supersonic anti-ship missiles before the joint US-Israeli airstrikes on the country. If delivered, the missiles would be among the most advanced military hardware to be transferred to Iran by China in recent years, according to media reports. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the report of the deal is part of a disinformation campaign. "The report is not true. As a responsible major country, China always abides by its international obligations. China opposes ill-intentioned association and the spread of disinformation, and hopes relevant sides will choose the course of action conducive to de-escalating the tense situation," she said. The report is significant as the US has assembled a flotilla of naval groups, including aircraft carriers, close to Iranian waters to carry out the current military campaign against Iran. Chinese official media on Monday reported that the US planes cras

Kuwait 'mistakenly shot down' 3 American F-15E aircraft: US military

The US military said on Monday that Kuwait "mistakenly shot down" three American F-15E Strike Eagles during a combat mission as Iran attacked the country. The US military's Central Command said the combat included attacks from Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones -- the first time Iran's ageing combat fleet has been engaged in the war. "The US Air Force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defences," it said. "All six aircrew ejected safely, have been safely recovered, and are in stable condition. Kuwait has acknowledged this incident, and we are grateful for the efforts of the Kuwaiti defence forces and their support in this ongoing operation.

Govt reviews West Asia crisis impact on trade, ensures full facilitation

The government on Monday held inter-ministerial deliberations with exporters and logistics players to assess the impact of escalating tensions in the West Asian region on India's trade and assured all measures to mitigate any disruptions. The US and Israel jointly launched military strikes on Iran on Saturday. Iran responded by firing drones and missiles at Israel and US military installations around the Gulf, and also at the global business hub of Dubai. The meeting was called by the Department of Commerce. It held a consultation with all stakeholder ministries, key logistics and trade facilitation partners to review the emerging geopolitical situation and its potential impact on India's export-import (EXIM) cargo flows, including the export ecosystem. The ministry said that stakeholders presented an assessment of the evolving operational environment, including routing and transit-time changes, vessel scheduling adjustments, container/equipment availability, freight and insurance

Oil tanker attacked by drone in Gulf of Oman; one Indian mariner killed

A bomb-carrying drone boat struck a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on Monday, killing one mariner on board, Oman said. The state-run Oman News Agency reported the attack in the Gulf of Oman off the coast of Muscat, the sultanate's capital. It identified the vessel as the MKD VYOM. It said the dead crew member was from India. Iran has been threatening vessels approaching the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, and is believed to have launched multiple attacks as the war in the Mideast continues after Israel and the United States started a major airstrike campaign targeting the Islamic Republic.

US-Israeli airstrikes targeted Natanz facility: Iran's envoy to IAEA

Iran's ambassador to the UN nuclear agency alleged on Monday that US-Israeli airstrikes have targeted Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment site. Israel and the US have not acknowledged strikes at the site, which America bombed back in the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June. Iran's Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Reza Najafi, told journalists he condemned what he called the "unlawful, criminal and brutal" attacks by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. "Again they attacked Iran's peaceful safeguarded nuclear facilities yesterday," he said. "Their justification that Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons is simply a big lie." When asked which site he was referring to, Najafi responded: "Natanz.

Saudi Arabia intercepts drones targeting its Ras Tanura oil refinery

Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura oil refinery came under attack on Monday from drones, the kingdom's defense ministry said, with authorities downing the incoming aircraft. A Saudi military spokesman made the announcement on the state-run Saudi Press Agency. Online videos from the site appeared to show thick black smoke rising after the attack. Even successfully intercepted drones cause debris that can spark fires and injure those on the ground. Ras Tanura, near Dammam, has a capacity over half a million barrels of crude oil a day.

Texas bar shooting: FBI probes it as possible terror act after 2 killed

A gunman wearing clothes with an Iranian flag design and the words "Property of Allah" killed two people and wounded 14 early on Sunday at a Texas bar, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The FBI is investigating the shooting, which erupted a day after the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran, as a potential act of terrorism. Police in Austin shot and killed the gunman, who used both a pistol and a rifle to carry out the attack, police said. The shooting happened outside Buford's Backyard Beer Garden just before 2 am along Sixth Street, a nightlife destination filled with bars and music clubs and only a few miles (kilometres) from the University of Texas at Austin. Nathan Comeaux, a 22-year-old senior, had spent the evening there with friends and said the bar was "full of college students, probably mostly UT kids, shoulder to shoulder, hundreds just enjoying their nights." The suspect drove past the bar several times before stopping and shooting from the windo

Several US warplanes crashed in Kuwait, all crew survived: Defence ministry

Several US warplanes crashed on Monday in Kuwait, the country's defence ministry said, with all the pilots safely bailing out. The ministry did not elaborate on what caused the crashes, but they came during an intense period of Iranian fire targeting the country. The Kuwaiti Defence Ministry said the pilots had been taken to a hospital for checkups and their condition was stable. The US military's Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
