BSF vehicle plunges into gorge in J-K's Poonch, one killed, six injured

A BSF personnel was killed and six injured when their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, a police official said on Sunday. The accident occurred in the Balnoi area of Mendhar when the driver of the Border Security Force (BSF) vehicle lost control while negotiating a blind curve on a hilly road, the official said. A rescue operation was immediately launched and the injured were evacuated to a nearby hospital where one of the critically injured BSF personnel succumbed to his injuries, he said. The condition of four of the injured was stated to be critical, the official added.

J-K: Apni Party's Bukhari pays tribute, says increase in terror activity

Paying tribute to the five soldiers killed during a recent anti-terror operation, Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari on Sunday termed as "alarming" the increased terror activity in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri. Addressing a one-day workers' convention here, the former minister said, "The growing (number of) terror incidents in Rajouri and Poonch are a cause for concern. Such activities are a grave threat to peace and brotherhood." Three militant associates arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama, Shopian

Security forces have arrested three militant associates in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama and Shopian districts and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession, police said on Friday. During a naka checking at Nagisheran in south Kashmir's Shopian, the security forces intercepted a man, Mohammad Asgar Dar from Nagisheran, who tried to evade them suspiciously. He was later arrested, a police spokesperson said. Arms and ammunition, including a pistol, a magazine and eight rounds, and other incriminating materials were recovered from his possession, the spokesperson said. Preliminary investigation revealed that Dar was working as a terrorist associate of proscribed terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), he said. 5 Army personnel killed in blast during anti-terrorist operation in J-K

Five Army personnel were killed and a major was injured on Friday in an explosion triggered by terrorists in the thickly forested Kandi area in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district where an operation was underway to flush out terrorists, officials said. The operation, still underway, was launched following inputs about the presence of a group of terrorists involved in an ambush on an Army truck in Bhata Dhurian of Poonch district last month, in which five security personnel were killed. Before Friday's attack, the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri have witnessed seven major terrorist incidents since October 2021 in which 29 people, including 22 Army personnel, have been killed. JK Bank records highest-ever net annual profit of Rs 1,197 crore in FY23

Jammu and Kashmir Bank has announced its highest-ever net annual profit of Rs 1,197 crore in the results for the financial year 2022-23. With a decade-high capital adequacy ratio of 15.39 per cent and NPAs at an eight-year low of 6.04 per cent, the bank also recorded its highest-ever quarterly profit of Rs 476 crore in the last quarter. "Jammu and Kashmir Bank has recorded Rs 1,197 crore as net profit for FY 2022-23 which is the highest ever annual profit," a bank spokesperson said. "The bank's gross and net NPA as percentages to gross and net advances improved considerably to 6.04 per cent and 1.62 per cent respectively, compared to 8.67 per cent and 2.49 per cent recorded last year." The growth of advances outpaced the increase in deposits. While advances grew by 17 per cent to 82,285 crore, deposits increased by around 6 per cent to Rs 1,22,038 crore. Mental healthcare call centre in Srinagar receives over 10,000 calls

About 70 per cent of the 10,000-odd calls made to a mental healthcare call centre here were by women, with a study suggesting the digital facility has made it easy for women to talk about their issues from home without being stigmatised. The call centre under the central government's Tele MANAS initiative was established at the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Rainawari here in November last year. Since its launch, the call centre has received more than 10,000 calls. "About 70 per cent of those calls were from women," Dr Arshad Hussain, a renowned psychiatrist working at the institute, told PTI. He said the institute conducted a study to ascertain why a majority of the distress calls were made by women. An Army helicopter crashed after a hard landing in a forested area in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district on Thursday following a technical fault, injuring the two pilots and a technician on board, officials said. An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, police said. Acting on specific input about the presence of militants in the Wanigam Payeen Kreeri area of Baramulla district, in north Kashmir, security forces launched a cordon and search operation there early Thursday morning, a police official said. Farmers engaged in mushroom cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir are upbeat over the government announcement to introduce one of the costliest mushrooms 'Shiitake' for commercial farming in the Union Territory.
