ODI World Cup: New Zealand haven't ruled out Williamson from their plans

New Zealand have not ruled out the recovering Kane Williamson from the ODI World Cup in India even if it means missing the first few fixtures. Head coach Gary Stead and the team management are optimistic about Williamson's recovery. The star batter hasn't played any cricket since March when he ruptured the ACL in his right knee while fielding for Gujarat Titans. He underwent surgery in April and has recently begun training and batting in the nets. The 33-year-old is also set to link up with the team during its series against England next month ahead of the World Cup. "Kane's working on a day-by-day, week-by-week process and we've been really clear and careful with him that we don't look too far ahead and get expectations too big or not big enough at times as well," Stead told reporters on Wednesday. "We will take every measure we can to make sure that we get the medical advice that lines up and he's where we want him to be before we make that call on whether he goes (to India for

Test rankings: Kane Williamson goes past Root to become number one batter

Team India and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin remained number one in the latest ICC Test Rankings even as New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson replaced Joe Root as the top-ranked batter. The Indian team, which lost the World Test Championship final to Australia last month, continues to hold on to its top spot. Ashwin also held on to his world No 1 spot among bowlers. The senior off-spinner has 860 points and is followed by Australia skipper Pat Cummins, who has moved two spots to second with 826 points. Another Indian who has remained static on number one is Ravindra Jadeja, who leads the all-rounders' list with 434 points. While Ashwin too remains on the second spot, Akshar Patel has dropped to fifth among all-rounders. Rishabh Pant, who has been out of action since his car accident in December last year, is the top-ranked Indian batter at number 10. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli occupy the 12th and 14th spots respectively. Shubman Gill is ranked fifth in the ODI rankings

Kane Williamson ruled out of IPL owing to injury, Gujarat Titans confirm

Kane Williamson, the Gujarat Titans batter, has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League owing to a knee injury, the franchise said on Sunday. The New Zealand batting mainstay sustained the injury during the season opener against Chennai Super Kings here last Friday. Williamson sustained the injury to his right knee while attempting a catch during the opening match at the Narendra Modi Stadium. "It is sad to lose Kane to injury so early in the tournament. We wish him a speedy recovery, with the hope of seeing him in action very soon," said GT's director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, in a press release. Williamson will now head home to New Zealand for further assessment, the defending champions said in the press release. Gujarat Titans will finalise a replacement for the right-handed batter and an announcement will be made in due course. PAK vs NZ, 1st Test: Williamson, Sodhi give Kiwis 81-run lead over hosts

Kane Williamson and tailender Ish Sodhi dug in much to the frustration of Pakistan as New Zealand moved ahead by 81 runs on the third day of the first cricket test on Thursday. Williamson, who completed his first test hundred in almost two years late on Day 2, was not out on 137 off 308 balls while Sodhi was unbeaten on 41 off 127 balls in his comeback test match after four years. New Zealand reached 519-6 at lunch. Williamson has fully capitalized on two stumping chances early in his innings and now has batted for nearly eight hours, hitting 12 fours. Sodhi was closing in on his fourth test half century and showed plenty of determination with the bat on a slow turning wicket. Resuming on 440-6 with a lead of two runs, both batters didn't get troubled against spinners Abrar Ahmed (3-172) and Nauman Ali (2-154), who have bowled bulk of the overs. Pakistan couldn't get through the defenses of both overnight batters even after taking the third new ball with Sodhi hitting three ...

Williamson steps down as NZ Test skipper, Southee named as replacement

New Zealand great Kane Williamson, who led the country to the World Test Championship triumph in its inaugural edition, stepped down as the captain from the longest format, the country's cricket board announced on Thursday. Tim Southee has been named the replacement in their WTC title defence. Williamson will continue to lead the side in the white-ball format with focus on the ODI World Cup in 2023 and T20 World Cup in 2024. Tom Latham has been appointed their vice-captain. "Captaining the Black Caps in Test cricket has been an incredibly special honour," said Williamson, who took over the role in 2016 from Brendon McCullum. "For me, Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game and I've enjoyed the challenges of leading the side in the format." Statistically, Williamson is the best Test captain in New Zealand's history, winning 22 of 40 matches at the helm, as well as eight draws and just 10 defeats. Under his leadership, New Zealand reached the top of the Test rankings before emergin
