Arrested police officer suspended on corruption charge

Four days after being arrested, an inspector rank police officer of Odisha was placed under suspension with immediate effect on Friday on the charge of accepting bribe, police said. Director General of Police R P Sharma suspended Soumyachit Mishra, former inspector-in-charge of Gop police station in Puri district, in the corruption case. Mishra was accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from one person in Nairasasan village under Gop police station limits to perform some work, a release issued by the police headquarters said. During the period of suspension, Mishra will remain under the disciplinary control of Inspector General of Police, Central Range, Cuttack, the release said. He was arrested on May 27.

Stalker chops off nursing assistant's ear

: A 39-year old nursing assistant was attacked allegedly by a stalker, who chopped off her right ear, after she rejected his marriage proposal Friday, police said here. The woman was walking to the medical college hospital here for work when the accused Nithin (35) with whom she was reportedly close earlier took out a knife and attacked her, the police said. A police team, which was nearby, took the accused into custody and rushed the woman to the hospital, where an emergency surgery was performed and her condition was stable. The accused, a former ambulance driver, was now working as an autorickshaw driver, police said. A case under various sections of the IPC, including attempt to murder and punishment for wrongful restraint, was registered against the accused, they said. Samajwadi Party leader shot dead in Greater Noida

A Samajwadi Party (SP) leader was shot dead by unidentified assailants near his home in Greater Noida's Dadri area Friday, police said. Ramtek Kataria was the president of the SP's Dadri assembly segment. The police have prima facie ruled out any political conspiracy in his death. "The incident took place near his home on Jarcha road in Dadri around 12.30 pm. Around four unidentified men arrived in a car and fled after pumping five bullets in his body. Kataria was rushed to a hospital but did not survive," a police official said. SSP Gautam Buddh Nagar Vaibhav Krishna said prima facie his killing appears to be a result of personal enmity with extended family. Youth wanted in several robbery cases nabbed in Dwarka

A 19-year-old youth wanted in several robbery cases was arrested from Dwarka, police said Friday. The accused, identified as Mohammad Razzaq Hussain was nabbed on Wednesday when he was about to travel to Bihar. The Delhi police had announced a Rs 25,000 reward for any information about Hussain. Hussain is a resident of Bharat Vihar and a native of Sitamarhi district in Bihar. The accused was previously arrested in two cases and was absconding in several others. "Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended Hussain from Kakrola in Dwarka when he was about to leave for Bihar," said PS Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell). During interrogation, the accused confessed to robbing mobile phones, cash and other valuables in several parts of Delhi and neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the DCP added.

Money laundering case: Robert Vadra skips Friday ED date

Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Friday skipped his scheduled appearance before the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case linked to purchase of alleged illegal assets abroad, officials said. They said Vadra has cited bad health as the reason for missing the date. The agency is expected to give him a fresh date for next week. Vadra was grilled for about five hours Thursday when the investigating officer of the case recorded his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Ready to take over probe into multi-crore bitcoin Ponzi scam, CBI tells SC

CBI told the Supreme Court Friday that it is ready to take over the investigation into the multi-crore bitcoin Ponzi scheme in which several investors were allegedly lured on the promise of handsome returns. CBI said this before a vacation bench comprising Justices M R Shah and A S Bopanna, hearing a plea filed by one of the arrested accused in the case seeking bail. The accused has also sought a CBI investigation in the case saying cases have been lodged against him in several states. Bitcoin or cryptocurrency is unregulated digital money that is issued and normally controlled by its developers and used and accepted among members of a virtual community. Bitcoin is not a legal tender in the country and not recognised as a medium of exchange. Elderly woman dies in car-truck collision in Jaipur

A 75-year-old woman died and four others were injured after their car collided with a truck in Jaipur rural area on Friday, police said. The five passengers were travelling to Gurgaon after attending a wedding in Kota when the incident occurred near the Kalyanpura flyover, Kotputli police station incharge Zaheer Abbas said. The deceased has been identified as Bharpai Devi. Four others, including Devi's son who is an assistant sub-inspector in the Haryana police, were injured, Abbas said. Two persons are critically injured and have been referred to Jaipur, while the others were discharged after primary treatment, the officer said. The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem. Efforts are on to nab the driver based on the CCTV footage, Abbas said, adding that a case was yet to be registered.

Lyon bomb suspect had pledged allegiance to IS

The main suspect in the bombing last week in the French city of Lyon that wounded 14 people had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, France's counter-terrorism prosecutor said on Friday. Remy Heitz said in a statement the 24-year-old man has admitted making the bomb and depositing the device in front of a bakery. He will be brought before an investigating judge. The suspect, identified only as Mohamed Hichem M, was arrested on Monday. He arrived in France on a tourist visa in August 2017 but failed to leave again. Police did not give his nationality but some French media reported that he was Algerian. He was unknown to police services before the incident. 3 doctors held for colleague suicide sent to judicial custody

A special court Friday sent three doctors of a state-run hospital, arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a junior colleague, to judicial custody till June 10. The accused -- Bhakti Mehere, Hema Ahuja and Ankita Khandelwal -- were arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of doctor Payal Tadvi by tormenting her with casteist slurs. They were produced before Additional Sessions Judge R M Sadrani at the end of their police custody. The judge did not accept the argument of Crime Branch, which took over the case from local police Thursday, to extend their custody for further probe in the matter. He then remanded the trio to judicial custody till June 10. The accused will be lodged in a jail here. NGT concerned over use of potable water in cricket fields

The National Green Tribunal has expressed concern over the use of potable or drinking water in cricket fields and directed an expert committee to submit report on steps to save water. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said in view of shortage of potable water, either Reverse Osmosis (RO) reject or disinfected and treated sewage should be used. The tribunal directed the committee comprising representatives of the Environment Ministry, Central Pollution Control Board, Bureau of Indian Standard, IIT-Delhi and the National Environmental Engineering Research to submit the report. "We have noticed that guidelines have been issued by the Sport Authority of India (SAI) on the subject being 'Field play and specifications on Sports Infrastructure' but the said guidelines do not take cognisance of source of water supply. Kerala govt freezes order to reinstate controversial cop

The Kerala government has frozen the controversial order of reinstating a police officer, who was suspended for alleged lapses that led to the killing of a Dalit Christian last year. The order was cancelled by the home department on the instructions of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as media reports on reinstating M S Shibu, the former station house officer at the Gandhi Nagar police station in Kottayam, had triggered a controversy. Railway clerk held for taking bribe to book tatkal tickets in Rajasthan

A railway head clerk was arrested on Friday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1600 for booking tatkal tickets in Bhilwara district, an ACB official said. Ganesh Lal Sain (50), who is posted at Gulabpura Railway Station, had demanded the bribe from complainant Govardhan Lal for booking four tatkal tickets, ACB ASP Brajraj Singh Charan said.
