Hardcore criminal arrested in J&K's Samba district

An alleged hardcore criminal was arrested and detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Tuesday. Yogeshwar Singh alias 'Jaibu', a resident of Udh Mandi village of Vijaypur, was arrested on Monday by a special police team and was subsequently lodged in Kathua district jail after execution of warrant under PSA, a police spokesman said. Singh is a habitual criminal and his activities are prejudicial. His motive was not only to create terror among peaceful and law abiding citizens but also to form a criminal gang, he said. The spokesman said the district police compiled Singh's entire record, prepared a dossier and got a warrant issued under PSA from deputy commissioner of Samba. Singh was involved in a number of crimes over the past few years, the spokesman said, adding that four FIRs stand registered against him since 2015, including two under NDPS Act. Army chief assures stern action against Major Gogoi

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Tuesday said that any case of moral turpitude and corruption against Major Leetul Gogoi will be dealt with sternly."Talking about Major Gogoi, I had clearly said that any case of moral turpitude and corruption will be dealt with sternly. SC turns down Lt Col Purohit's plea for SIT probe into his abduction, torture

The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to entertain Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit's plea seeking a court-monitored probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into his alleged abduction, illegal detention and brutal torture in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Naveen Sinha and K M Joseph said entertaining the petition at this stage might impact the ongoing trial in the case. The bench, however, granted Purohit the liberty to raise his contentions before the trial court and said it is not expressing any opinion on his petition. "Why should we interfere at this stage? It may impact the trial," the bench said. Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Purohit, told the bench that the issue raised by Purohit in his plea has to be looked into. Kushner Cos unpaid NYC fines: USD 500K and counting

The Kushner family real estate firm has amassed more than half a million dollars in unpaid fines for various New York City sanitation and building violations, much of that bill incurred while presidential adviser Jared Kushner was running the company. City figures compiled for The Associated Press by a tenant watchdog group show that most of the fines USD 350,000 stretched over the past five years. And just last month the company was fined USD 210,000 for filing false construction documents. The Kushner Cos says the tally is misleading because many of the fines are the fault of renters and businesses in its buildings. The recent USD 210,000 fine came after AP reported the Kushner Cos filed documents claiming it had no rent-stabilised tenants when, in fact, it had hundreds.

CJI office formally recommends Ranjan Gogoi as Chief Justice

The office of the Chief Justice of India on Tuesday sent a letter to the Union of India (UOI) recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the successor to incumbent Chief Justice Dipak Misra, according to sources.On September 1, the CJI's office had proposed the name of Justice Gogoi as the next head of the judiciary of the country.If appointed, Justice Gogoi, the second most senior judge in the apex court, will take charge as the 46th Chief Justice of India.Justice Gogoi would take over the reins from CJI Dipak Misra on October 3, if elevated.As per protocol, the sitting CJI has to name his successor, after which clearance has to be sought from the central government and then the President of the country.Born in 1954, Justice Gogoi was appointed as a permanent judge of the Guwahati High Court on February 28, 2001, and elevated as a Supreme Court judge on April 23, 2012.

Class 11 student shot dead outside school

A class 11 student was shot dead by unidentified miscreants outside his school in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district Tuesday, police said. The deceased was identified as Preyanshu, a resident of Dungar village in the district. He was shot dead this morning outside National Inter College, Kandhla, Circle Officer Rajesh Tiwari said, adding police rushed to the spot and started a hunt to nab the absconding accused. Meanwhile, security has been tightened and extra police force deployed in the area, Tiwari said.

Teenage boy lynched on suspicion of being thief

A teenager who had entered a house to allegedly steal valuables, was lynched by locals in northwest Delhi's Mukundpur in the early hours Tuesday, following which three people were arrested, police said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Aslam Khan said the 16-year-old boy had entered a house to setal valuables, but was caught by the owner and beaten to death by some locals. A case has been registered at the Bhalaswa Dairy police station in this regard. Three of the accused have been arrested while three others are absconding, the police official said.

CJI Dipak Misra recommends Justice Ranjan Gogoi as next chief justice

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra Tuesday sent a letter to the Central government recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor. Justice Gogoi will be sworn in as the next CJI on October 3, a day after Justice Misra's tenure ends. The CJI has written to the Ministry of Law and Justice endorsing and recommending the name of Justice Gogoi, the senior-most judge, as the next CJI. Highly placed sources had confirmed on September 1 that Justice Misra had decided to go by convention and recommend the name of Justice Gogoi, who is next in seniority to him, to succeed him. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had recently asked Justice Misra to recommend his successor, setting in motion the process of a change of guard in the apex court. Woman poisoned to death by husband, in-laws for dowry

A woman was killed allegedly by her husband and in-laws for dowry in Fariha area here, police said Tuesday. Poonam (18) was poisoned to death on Monday allegedly by her hunband and in-laws, they said. Woman held for posing as cop to extort money

A 33-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly posing as a police personnel and extorting money from another woman here in Maharashtra, a police official said Tuesday. The accused, Aparna Manohar Mohare, posed as a policewoman and contacted the 20-year-old victim in Mumbra here last Wednesday, claiming that an offence of kidnapping and theft was registered against the latter at the Kalyan police station. Mohare allegedly demanded Rs 7 lakh from the victim to save her from arrest in the case, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. The accused finally settled the deal at Rs 1 lakh and took Rs 10,000 initially from a relative of the victim, Narkar said. Detonators, gelatin sticks seized in Maharashtra; two held

A cache of explosives, including gelatin sticks and detonators, was seized from Maharashtra's Raigad district and two people were arrested in this connection, a police official said Tuesday. Around 46 gelatin sticks, some detonators and other material were seized Monday after a raid at the house of Mohammad Umar Jahir Kazi at Dhalghar village in Mangaon tehsil of the coastal Raigad district adjoining Mumbai, he said. It is suspected that the explosives were meant for illegal fishing activity, he said. Kazi, 48, was arrested following the seizure, he said. On further inputs, one more person, who used to sell these explosives to Kazi, was arrested from Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district, he said. Some fishermen were injured recently in a blast while they were engaged in fishing activity in the Arabian Sea, Raigad Superintendent of Police Anil Paraskar told PTI. While investigating the case, police got information about Kazi and another person who was selling these explosives .

Man gets 10-yr imprisonment for bid to kill teenaged girl

A 21-year-old man has been awarded 10 years' rigorous imprisonment by a court here in Maharashtra for attempting to kill a girl. District and Sessions Judge P P Jadhav also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on the accused, Kamalkant Maheshchand Saini, while pronouncing the order last Wednesday. The victim, then aged 14 and a resident of Kalwa town here, got acquainted with Saini during a visit to her native village in Rajasthan's Dausa district in February 2016. The duo fell in love, following which Saini came to Kalwa on the pretext of appearing for an exam and stayed at the girl's house. On March 18, 2016, he insisted that the girl accompany him to his native village. When she refused, he fired a country-made revolver at her, seriously injuring her. The girl's sister raised an alarm and their neighbours rushed the victim to a hospital. Hyderabad: Theft at Nizam Museum, search for suspect underway

Artefacts from Hyderabad's Nizam Museum were stolen by unidentified persons on Monday, after which police launched a search operation to nab the suspects.Valuables such as a gold tiffin box, tea saucer, and a spoon were allegedly stolen from the museum, which was established nearly two decades ago."A theft case occurred in the limits of Mirchowk police station, it is suspected that few unknown persons have stolen a gold tiffin box, gold teacup saucer and gold spoon from Nizam museum," said the Circle Inspector of Mirchowk Police Station.A case has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the investigation is underway.This museum is a repository of souvenirs and mementos gifted to the last Nizam of Hyderabad state, Mir Osman Ali Khan Asaf Jah VII, on account of his silver jubilee celebrations in 1936.

Widow raped by brother-in-law on promise of marriage

A woman here has alleged that she was raped by her brother-in-law here on the promise of marriage, police said on Tuesday. The 30-year-old woman in her police complaint said following her husband's death, her brother-in-law developed physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage, they said. According to police, the accused later refused to marry her under pressure from family. A case has been registered against the accused who is absconding, police said.
