Chit fund case: SC refuses urgent listing of Rajeev Kumar's plea for further protection from arrest

In a setback to former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, the Supreme Court Tuesday refused to accord urgent listing of his plea for extension of the 7-day protection from arrest granted to him in the Saradha chit fund scam case. Kumar has rushed to the top court seeking indefinite extension of shield from arrest on the ground that work in trial courts in Kolkata and the Calcutta High Court has been paralysed due to the ongoing strike by lawyers. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had on May 17 withdrawn the protection from arrest granted earlier to Kumar and said that it would continue for seven days to enable him to approach the competent court for relief. The protection ends on May 23. Kumar's counsel approached the vacation bench of the apex court on Monday seeking urgent listing of his plea for extending the protection in view of lawyers' strike in Kolkata. Man held for 'forging' documents against Church head

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly forging documents against Syro-Malabar Church head Cardinal George Alencherry, following which a row has erupted in Kerala's influential Catholic Church with a section of priests protesting against the arrest. Three bishops of the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese have come out openly against the arrest of Adithya Valavi, who is a post-graduate from an IIT, claiming that he is not a criminal and he had no role in forging documents. The priests have claimed that the man, a faithful, while working as an intern with a reputed business group in Kochi, had taken a screenshot of documents allegedly having Alencherry's name from the computer server of the firm and brought it to the notice of a church priest he knew. The priest reportedly shared it with another priest, who allegedly submitted it to a Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church. Serbia introduces life sentence amid EU criticism

Serbian lawmakers have voted to introduce life imprisonment without parole for the gravest criminal acts, despite criticism from the Council of Europe's top human rights official. Parliament on Tuesday approved the changes to the Balkan country's criminal law with 159 votes in the 250-member assembly. Lawmakers from several opposition parties boycotted the vote. The new legislation envisages life sentence for such acts as the killing or rape of a child or a pregnant woman. It resulted from a petition launched by the father of a teenage girl who was raped and killed in 2014. The Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatovic has warned that the law is in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights because it does not envisage the possibility of conditional release or sentence review.

Delhi cop's death: Daughter alleges threat from accused, demands security for family

Man, accused of chain snatching, motorbike thefts, held

The city police has arrested a man from Kasarwadavali area here for alleged involvement in cases of chain snatching and motorbike thefts. The police had arrested his accomplice earlier but Ramesh Hari Singh (21), resident of Borivili, had given them the slip, said senior inspector Kishore Khairnar. Singh was arrested from the city Monday, he said. On the night of May 14, a police patrolling team spotted two men moving around in suspicious manner in Vijay Nagri locality here. When the police accosted them, Singh fled while the other, Gafirld Anthony Menezes (44), was held. Menezes, resident of Mira Road, allegedly revealed during interrogation that he and Singh were involved in several cases of chain snatching and motorbike theft. SSLC & HSSLC results to be published on May 27: MBOSE

The Meghalaya Board of School Education (Mbose) Tuesday said the results of the SSLC and HSSLC examination will be officially declared on May 27, an official said. The results released by a website on Tuesday claiming it to be this year's Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination results were fake and were of last year's, the official said. The results of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) and SSLC would be published on May 27, the official added. An FIR will be lodged against the website for publishing fake results, he said. "We will immediately seek action against people involved in creating the website and for declaring the fake results," the board's joint director M Marbaniang said. A complaint will be lodged with the cyber crime cell of the state police for investigation and taking action against the website as per law, he said.

Man held for killing transgender

A 38-year-old transgender was found brutally killed in her house with her body bearing multiple stab wounds in Kalyan city in Maharashtra, police said Tuesday, adding that the accused has been arrested. The body of the victim, identified as Dhiraj Salve alias Reva Desai, was found to be in a highly decomposed condition, said a senior police official. A case has been registered under section 302 (Punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a day after the body was found. The official said the victim's body bore at least 40 stab wounds. The accused, identified as Sushil Bhalerao (25), was arrested from Mumbra in Thane district this morning. Bhalerao was in relationship with the deceased, the official said, adding that he might have killed the transgender as he used to suspect her fidelity. Pilot accused of sexual harassment barred from entering Air India premises

An Air India pilot accused of sexual harassment has been told that he needs a written permission to enter the airline's offices till an inquiry is over, according to an official document. Last Wednesday, the national carrier had said it has set up a high-level inquiry to probe a junior woman pilot's sexual harassment complaint against a the accused, who is holding a senior position of commander rank. In a letter to the accused on Monday, Abhay Pathak, Air India regional director (northern region), said that "pending (an) enquiry... during the period of suspension, you will not enter the premises of Air India Limited without written permission." Man carrying country-made pistol arrested in Jammu

A man was arrested for allegedly carrying a country-made pistol and live bullets here, officials said Tuesday. The man tried to run away when a police team on checking duty spotted him at Shamshan Ghat Chowk in Shastri Nagar on Monday, they said. He was nabbed by police and one country-made pistol and two live cartridges were seized from his possession, the officials said. He has been identified as Manoj Kumar alias Moja, they added. In the past, Kumar had been involved in a number of criminal cases, including attempt to murder, extortion, stabbing, possession of illegal arms. He was recently released from detention under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), the officials said. The PSA is an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases. A case has been registered against Kumar at Gandhinagar police station and further investigation is underway, the officials said.

Police crack Vajreshwari temple dacoity; five held

Police Tuesday claimed to have cracked the May 10 dacoity committed in famous Vajreshwari temple in Maharashtra's Thane district by arresting five persons from various villages, a senior officer said. Police also recovered Rs 2.83 lakh out of Rs 7.10 lakh cash stolen from the temple, which is located in Bhiwandi taluka, around 75 km away from Mumbai. A gang of about half a dozen dacoits, armed with swords, had allegedly looted Rs 7 lakh cash from the temple in the wee hours of May 10 by tying up the only security guard. Thane Superintendent of Police Shivaji Rathod told reporters that the accused were arrested from the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and from villages in Jawhar and Shahapur talukas. He said the accused conducted recce of the entire Ganeshpuri locality during recently-concluded religious fair before committing the crime. Kota woman drowns six-moth-old son in water tank, held

A 35-year-old woman here allegedly drowned her six-month-old son in a water tank, police said Tuesday. She allegedly committed the crime in deep sleep in the wee hours on Sunday, police said. The woman, identified as Deepika Gujjar, a resident of Saraswati Colony in the city, has been arrested under Section 302 of the IPC. According to police, she took the baby, Shiva, to the second floor of their three-storeyed house and drowned him in the water tank before resuming her sleep on the first floor.
