Ram Rahim appeals for parole, says he wants to farm

Self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving life imprisonment for the murder of a journalist, has appealed for parole to the Sunaria jail authorities here, saying he wants to farm his land in Sirsa which is lying barren.Ram Rahim, who is also serving a 20-year prison term in a rape case, is working as a gardener in the jail.The appeal has been sent by the jail authorities to the district administration which, in turn, has forwarded it to the Haryana government, officials said.A special CBI court in Panchkula had on January 17 sentenced the self-styled godman and three others to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Ramchander Chhatrapati in October 2002.The journalist was killed in Sirsa after his newspaper published an anonymous letter alleging sexual exploitation of women by Ram Rahim at the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters in the town.He was sentenced in August 2017 to 20-years imprisonment for raping two of his women followers.

Two shot dead in UP's Varanasi over land dispute

Unidentified men shot a man and a woman dead at her house in Jagatpur here apparently over a land dispute, police said Friday. The two, identified as 42-year-old Harendra Singh and 35-year-old Ruchi singh, were killed on Thursday night, the police said. The incident took place when Harendra Singh, a resident of Jagatpur, went to the nearby house of Ruchi Singh in Varanasi city, an official of Rohania Police Station said. The police reached the spot after being informed about the incident on Friday morning, they said. Prime facie, the incident seems to be the fallout of a land dispute, the police said. The bodies were taken into custody, they said, adding that the investigation is underway and search for the accused has been launched.

CVC seeks sanction to prosecute former Niti Aayog CEO, officials for alleged graft

The Central vigilance Commission (CVC) has sought sanction to prosecute some serving and retired bureaucrats, including former Niti Aayog CEO Sindhushree Khullar and the ex-secretary of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Anup K Pujari, for their alleged involvement in a corruption case, officials said Friday. Besides them, the anti-corruption watchdog has sought approval to prosecute Prabodh Saxena, who is Principal Secretary in the Himachal Pradesh government, and Rabindra Prasad, former Under Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs in the case involving INX Media, they said. The CVC has sent a request seeking prosecution sanction against these employees to the Finance and the Personnel ministries, the officials said. The case related to the alleged irregularities in granting clearance by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore. Sri Lankan police officials to face criminal charges for Easter Sunday Attacks

Nine senior Sri Lankan police officials will face criminal investigations for their failure to act on the intelligence warnings, including from India, to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks that killed 258 people. Attorney General Dappula de Livera directed acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne to conduct the probe against the officers found liable for criminal negligence during an inquiry commission appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena. 90,000 cases registered under POCSO Act pending trial by 2016

Over 90,000 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were pending for trial in the country by the end of 2016, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday. Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani said 36,022 cases were registered under the POCSO Act in 2016 and 15,283 of them were pending investigation. As many as 90,205 cases registered under the POCSO Act were pending trial at the end of 2016, she said during Question Hour in Lok Sabha.

Terror module in Amroha, Delhi: NIA files charge sheet against 10

The National Investigation Agency Friday filed a charge sheet before a Delhi court against 10 suspects in a case involving a terror module in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh's Amroha. The charge sheet was filed before Additional Session Judge Ajay Kumar under various provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against accused including the alleged leader Mufti Mohammed Suhail, a mufti in a seminary in Amroha. The court has put the matter for consideration on July 4. Suhail along with Delhi resident Mohammad Faiz had formed a terror module inspired by the ISIS and called it Harkat-ul-harb-e-Islam, the agency said.

SC to hear plea for CBI probe into UP Bar Council chief's murder, safety of lady advocates

The Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear a plea seeking CBI probe into the recent murder of Uttar Pradesh Bar Council president Darvesh Singh Yadav, who was shot dead in the Agra court premises. The plea, filed by advocate Indu Kaul, was listed before a vacation bench of justices Deepka Gupta and Surya Kant who agreed to hear it next Tuesday saying that it was a "serious matter". Four arrested for cricket betting

Four persons have been arrested for betting on cricket matches during the ongoing ICC World Cup in England and Wales, police said Friday. The arrests were made after officials of the Central Crime Unit (CCU) of Thane Crime Branch, acting in a tip-off, raided a residential locality in Kalyan near here Wednesday night, they said. The four were found placing bets on the match played between South Africa and New Zealand at Edgbaston in Birmingham, said senior inspector (CCU) Anil Honrao. The police gave the name of the arrested as Jitu Manglani, 35, Pradip Rohera, 40, Manish Chetwani, 36, and Dileep Mishra, 38. The police, during the raid, seized accessories used for betting like mobile phones and routers, he said. Another person, Sonu Chawla, who operates an illegal cricket website, has also been booked in the case, but not arrested yet, the police officer said. Besides the five, more people may be involved in the betting network, he added.

The Supreme Court agreed on Friday to hear a plea on June 25 seeking safety and security of women lawyers in courts in wake of the recent murder of Uttar Pradesh Bar Council president Darvesh Singh Yadav, who was shot dead in the Agra court premises. A vacation bench of justices Deepka Gupta and Surya Kant termed it a "serious mater" and said it will hear the petition filed by advocate Indu Kaul next Tuesday. UP: 5-year-old boy dies of suffocation after getting locked inside car

A five-year-old boy suffocated to death allegedly after he was accidentally trapped inside his father's car while playing at a village in Muzaffaranagar district of Uttar Pradesh, police said Friday. The minor, identified as Mohd Zaid, died Thursday after he accidentally locked the doors of the car parked outside his house in Sikri village and was unable to come out of the vehicle, they said. The boy was found unconscious in the car, hours after he went missing. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.

The police are waiting for the medical test reports of a minor girl, who was allegedly raped by her neighbour's relative inside her accomodation at Fort William, the Eastern Command headquarter of the Indian Army here, a senior officer said. Unable to repay loan, farmer ends life in UP's Muzaffarnagar

A 65-year-old farmer committed suicide by consuming poison in a village here allegedly after being harassed for not being able to repay a loan he had taken from a bank, police said Friday. The farmer, Dhanprakash, died Thursday at a hospital in Sahojani Tagan village under the Mansurpur Police Station limits, five days after consuming poison, they said.
