Authorities have attached properties of an absconding accused in the murder case of Ashfaq, who was an eyewitness in the killings of his two brothers during the Muzaffarnagar riots in Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday. The properties of Sehdev, one of the seven accused in the case, have been attached after an order by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Rakesh Gautam, said Harsharan Sharma, Station House Officer of Khatauli. Six other accused in the case have already been arrested and Sehdev is currently on the run, he added. Ashfaq, who had witnessed the killings of his brothers Nawab and Shahid during the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013, was shot dead on March 11 after he had apparently refused to withdraw the case, police said. The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and its adjoining areas in August and September 2013 had claimed more than 60 lives, while over 40,000 people were displaced.

Two persons were arrested after 50 kg of ganja worth Rs 5 lakh were allegedly recovered from their possession in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district on Tuesday, police said. During a checking on a national highway in Chhata town, a car was intercepted and two persons were arrested after a brief exchange of fire, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Chhata) Jagdish Kaliraman said. A 20-something married woman was attacked allegedly by her paramour, whom she was living with in outer Delhi's Narela, following a quarrel, police said Tuesday. They said that on Tuesday morning, the woman was found lying in a pool of blood by the wife of the caretaker of their rented house, who informed the police. The woman is currently hospitalised, they said. Police said the woman has two sons and she was having an "extra-marital affair" with the man, Arun Shah, who is married with six children. Shah is a cousin of the woman's husband, police said, adding the two had eloped from their home and were staying in Delhi for the past two months. They were employed with a factory in Narela, said a senior police officer. He said they had frequent quarrels. Police said Shah has gone absconding and the police are on the lookout for him.
Two persons were allegedly assaulted by a mob in Haryana's Gurgaon district on Tuesday on the suspicion of smuggling cattle. Two pickup vans were intercepted by a group of "cow protection unit" near Islampur village, 3 km from here, in the morning, said Savita Kataria -- the person who led the group. Shathil Ahmad, a resident of Palwal district, and Tayaid were arrested and a search is on for two others who fled the spot, said Gurgaon police PRO Subhash Bokan. According to Kataria, residents of the village went on a rampage after "they saw beef inside the vehicles" and thrashed Ahmad and Tayaid. The police said the accused were on their way to deliver the beef consignment in Delhi, adding that the two vehicles had been seized. A Pune resident has been arrested by the cyber cell of Mumbai police for allegedly stalking a senior woman bureaucrat, an official said Tuesday. Sharif Ghafar Khan has been charged under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act for stalking and outraging the modesty of a woman, he said. Khan was remanded in judicial custody till June 29, he added.
The Assam Rifles Tuesday seized 1,667 gram raw diamond worth Rs 10 crores from the possession of two women in Hailakandi district of south Assam and arrested them, police said. They said that a team of Assam Rifles recovered the diamond from a bag when they searched an auto-rickshaw at Monacherra, 9 kms from Hailakandi town. The two women, identified as Monia Sangma and Minati Sangma, were arrested, police said. The Assam Rifles handed over the two women and the diamond to the police at the Lala police station. Monia told the police that the precious stones were given to her by a cousin, who works in a coal mine in Meghalaya, for selling in the market and she was going to give it to a customer.
A convict serving a 10-year sentence in a dowry case was beaten to death by other inmates following a clash inside the Ghaghidih Central Jail here Tuesday, police said. Manoj Singh was beaten to death by some jail inmates belonging to one Pankaj Dubey gang following an altercation, East Singhbhum district Senior Superintendent of Police Anoop Birtheray said. He said the clash broke out after Manoj Singh beat up some inmates belonging to the gang and in retaliation, the gang members lynched Singh. The SSP said an undertrial prisoner, Sumit Singh, suffered serious injuries in the clash and was admitted at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical Hospital here. He added that half-a-dozen other injured inmates were undergoing treatment at the jail hospital.

The CBI Tuesday cited a "Forensic Psychological Analysis Statement" of accused Sharad Kalaskar and told a court here that he had admitted during the test that he and Sachin Andure killed rationalist Narendra Dabholkar. The prosecution cited the report while opposing the bail of lawyer Sanjeev Punalekar, and said that it was already part of the charge sheet against Kalaskar. The argument on the bail plea of Punalekar is being heard before Additional Sessions Judge (special judge) R M Pande. The CBI has claimed that Kalaskar and Andure shot dead Dabholkar while he was on a morning walk on the Onkareshwar Bridge in Pune on August 20, 2013. Two persons have been arrested for allegedly running a betting racket in Delhi, police said on Tuesday. The suspected bookies had taken bets worth more than Rs 35 lakh on the cricket World Cup match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh on Monday. It was found that the betting rates were being received on a social media group and payment was also being taken through digital wallets, the police said. Acting on inputs, the Crime Branch laid a trap and busted the betting racket in Moti Nagar area, and arrested Kunal (25) and Salman (24), an officer said. Twelve mobile phones, 15 SIM cards, two laptops, LED TV, registers and others were seized from their possession, the officer said. Kunal used to work in a call centre but had quit his job, while Salman is unemployed. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they had been running the betting racket for the past two years, the officer added.
