Five men, including an employee of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), were arrested for allegedly leaking MCA and BCA third semester question papers from its study centre in Jharkhand's Bokaro, police said Sunday. The accused were identified as Dev Shankar (31), Vivek Kumar Sharma (27), Johanson Hans (30), residents of Jharkhand, Ankit Saxena (23), a resident of Uttar Pradesh and Mohammad Iqbal (24), a resident of Delhi, they said. According to police, on December 8, 2018, S G Swami, the registrar of IGNOU, Maidan Garhi in New Delhi had filed a complaint regarding question paper leak. The warden of a government-run girls hostel and her husband were arrested on Sunday for allegedly molesting and harassing girls of the hostel in Alwar district of Rajasthan. The action was taken after two girls complained to the police that the couple used to molest them and pressured them to befriend others allegedly participating in the "dastardly acts". "The accused used to call the girls to their house and harassed and molested them. They had been doing this for the last several days. Two girls gave a written complaint to the police following which an FIR was lodged on Saturday," Additional SP Alwar Mahesh Tripathi said. Two police officers and six constables were suspended for alleged corruption and dereliction of duty in Jalna district Sunday. District Superintendent of Police S Chaitanya also shunted out a police inspector attached to Mantha police station for failure to curb crime in the area, official sources said. A man died of asphyxiation and five of his family members, including four children, fell unconscious after they inhaled smoke emanating from an 'angithi', which they had forgotten to remove from their room, police said Sunday. The incident took place in Chamba district's Kuther village on Saturday night. Jagia Ram (62) died of asphyxiation while his wife Peenji and their grandchildren Ranjit, Rakhi, Sheelu and Kamal fell unconscious after inhaling carbon monoxide, Chamba SP Monica Bhutunguru said. Their neighbours took them to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College and Hospital. Jagia Ram died while undergoing treatment, whereas the condition of his family members was stated to be stable, Bhutunguru said. Inquest proceedings were initiated after a case was registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) at Bharmour police station, the SP said, adding that a team was also sent to their home to ascertain the exact situation.
An Egyptian court on Sunday upheld a five-year prison sentence for the country's former anti-corruption chief, found guilty of insulting the military, legal sources said. A military court rejected Hisham Geneina's appeal and confirmed his sentence, a judicial source said, over comments made in an interview with the news website HuffPost Arabi. Geneina was head of Egypt's Central Auditing Organisation until he was sacked by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in 2016 for allegedly exaggerating the cost of corruption. He subsequently became a top aide to former military chief of staff Sami Anan, who planned to challenge Sisi in presidential polls but was arrested. Geneina claimed Anan held documents on "political events and crises that Egyptian society has passed through" since the 2011 uprising. He said the documents could be released if Anan -- who remains in jail -- was harmed. Following the interview, Geneina was detained in February 2018 and sentenced last April to five years in prison .

Four Afghan nationals have been arrested for allegedly smuggling heroin into India by hiding the contraband in their abdomen, police said Sunday. The accused had come to Delhi on a medical visa from Afghanistan, they said. Abdul Haq Noorzai, Mohammad Naeim Noorzai, Mohammad Esmael Noorzai and Mohammad Nasim Noorzai, all from Farah province in western Afghanistan, were found trafficking heroin concealed in their abdomen for sale in Delhi-NCR and other states, police said. The accused have been admitted in Safdarjung Hospital and 122 capsules totalling 920 grams heroin have been extracted from their body by doctors. It may take a few days to extract all heroin capsules from their abdomen, Pramod Singh Kushwah, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), said. A police head constable has come out with several suggestions for improving conviction rate in Maharashtra after studying over 200 court rulings as part of his Master of Laws (LLM) studies. The thesis submitted by constable Dwarkadas Bhange has prompted the police authorities to direct district-level officials to study trial court judgements. Bhange presented a thesis on 'Critical analysis of cases decided by the sessions court in 2017 in Police Commissionerate, Aurangabad' while earning his LLM degree last year. He analysed as many as 215 cases. Additional Director General of Police (Training) Sanjay Saxena Saturday directed all Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police that sessions court judgements in their areas should be studied in the similar way. Bhange's findings are valuable and they have been circulated among investigating officers, Saxena said in the order. A 30-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by two men in Bindapur area of Dwarka district on Friday, police said. The deceased, Imran, was a street vendor, they said. The incident was a fallout of an old dispute between the victim and the accused persons, police said. On Friday, at 6.08 pm, officials were informed about an incident of firing at Shukar Bazar road, they said. The SOG arrested seven members of the gang and recovered Rs 5.48 lakh in cash, cheques taken from 30 people with an amount of Rs 7 lakh each, original documents of the candidates, Bluetooth devices and admit cards of the Agriculture Supervisor examination held on Sunday, Additional SP (SOG) Karan Sharma said. Three persons were arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, a senior police official said Sunday. A fourth accused is still at large and efforts were underway to nab him, the official added. Sagar Superintendent of Police Amit Sanghi said the girl and her grandfather were on their way to a temple on a hillock on the outskirts of the city when the four accused obstructed their way, assaulted the elderly man and raped the victim. "The incident happened on Friday. Narendra Ahirwar (26), Pradip Sour (35) and Motilal Sour (28) have been arrested for rape under relevant sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) filed a charge sheet against 38 people in the Bulandshahr district court on Sunday in connection with the death of police inspector SubhodhKumar. Out of the 38, five people named in the charge sheet have been arrested under 302 (Punishment for murder) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code, while 33 have been held under 307 (attempt to murder) and other relevant sections of IPC. Five persons were arrested here on Sunday for stealing a taxi service vehicle, officials said. During routine checks near Roadways Bus Depot in Sahibabad Industrial area, a police team signalled a car to stop, however the driver resisted and made a bid to escape. To stop the vehicle, the police fired at the rear-end of it and punctured the car's bumper. The driver lost control over the car and rammed the road divider, SP (city) Shlok Kumar. The driver and two others in the car fired shots at the personnel and tried to escape. In the police's retaliatory fire, one of the accused sustained an injury in his leg. Bodies of two people, including a constable of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), were recovered Sunday in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. SSB constable Dinesh Kumar Thakur, a resident of Chhattisgarh, was found dead with head injuries near TCP Banihal along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, SHO of the Banihal Police Station Ajaz Wani said. According to preliminary investigation, the jawan had left Srinagar for his home on February 25. Police have registered a case and further investigation is on to ascertain the cause of his death, the SHO said. Another deceased was identified as Surinder Paul, an employee of the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF). His body was recovered from a stream in nearby Digdole area. A Gujarat court has sentenced a man to 20 years imprisonment for raping his two teenage step daughters. Additional Session Judge J M Sojitra on Saturday sentenced the 45-year-old man under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Public prosecutor H R Joshi said. Joshi told PTI that police had registered a case in December 2013 on the basis of a complaint filed by the 13-year-old and 14-year-old girls. The girls told police they were raped for over two months ever since their mother was forced to go out to work and they were alone in home.
