AugustaWestland: Delhi court seeks CBI, ED reply on Christian Michel bail plea

Alleged AgustaWestland middleman Christian Michel on Friday approached a Delhi court for bail in CBI and ED cases.Special Judge Arvind Kumar issued a notice to the CBI and ED on the bail plea and sought reply till February 12.Michel, the alleged middleman in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland chopper deal case, was extradited from the UAE on December 4 last year.It was stated before Delhi's Patiala House Court that since the chargesheet was not filed against Michel within the stipulated 60-day period under Section 167(2), there is no basis keeping him in judicial custody. Christian Michel is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail.

Former judge Ranjit Singh files criminal complaint against Sukhbir Badal, Majithia

Former judge Ranjit Singh, who headed a panel probing incidents of sacrilege and police firing in Punjab, has filed a criminal complaint against SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia for making "false, derogatory and defamatory" statements against him. The petitioner in his complaint to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, claimed that both Badal and Majithia made "derogatory statements against him with an intention to bring him as well as Commission of Inquiry headed by him into disrepute". "Thus committing offence punishable in terms of Section 10-A of The Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952", the petition stated. Under the section 10-A, if anybody was found to be involved in bringing the commission or its member to disrepute with defamatory statements, then this offence can be punishable with six months imprisonment or fine or both. 7 held for robbing fish trader of Rs 5 lakh in Mangaluru

Seven people have been arrested for allegedly robbing a fish trader of Rs 5 lakh at the railway station here, police said Friday. The arrest was made Thursday. The victim Mohammed Nakwa from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, was relieved of the money when he arrived at the station February 5, the police said. The accused snatched the bag with the money he was carrying and fled, they said. A case was registered and investigations led the police team to Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district, where all the accused were apprehended, they said. A car and mobile phones were also seized from the gang, they added.

Maoist held in Odisha for TDP leaders' killing

A hardcore Maoist was arrested from Odisha's Koraput district on Friday in connection with the killing of two TDP leaders in Andhra Pradesh in 2018, police said. The Maoist identified as Dambaru Khila was arrested from Kodikhal village, Koraput Superintendent of Police, Kanwar Vishal Singh, said. The Koraput police picked up Khila from his house following a tip-off. Two mobile phones were seized from him, the SP said. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA of Araku constituency, Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former TDP MLA Siveri Soma were killed by the outlawed CPI (Maoist) near Livitiputta in Andhra Pradesh on September 23 last year, he said. Steps are being taken to hand over Khila to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the murder case, Singh said. During investigation, the NIA had gathered information about the alleged role of Khila in the killing of the TDP leaders and was trying to nab him, the police said.

Mayawati should pay back public money spent on building her and party symbol statues: SC

The Supreme Court on Friday said that it was of the view that BSP leader Mayawati has to reimburse all the public money spent on building of her and party symbol 'elephants' statutes at public places.A bench presided by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, "Pay all the money from your (Mayawati) pocket. Madam Mayawati has to reimburse the public exchequer all the amount spent on statues. This is our tentative view."The bench also comprising justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna posted the matter for a final hearing on April 2.The court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Ravi Kant alleging misuse of crores of tax-payers' money for installing such statues.Filed in 2009, the petition had sought the top court's direction to restrain Mayawati from installing her and party symbol statues in public places at the cost of the state exchequer and demanded a CBI probe into the issue.The plea alleged hundreds of crores of public money had been spent to "falsely glorify" Mayawati.The activity was .

Woman kills husband' with the help of paramour, calls it 'heart attac

A woman allegedly killed her husband with the help of her lover and his friends here, and called it a "heart attack"."A person, named Baba Khan, was found dead at his residence under suspicious circumstances on November 15 last year. His wife Zaheeda Begum informed about this to the police and said that Baba died of a heart attack. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and S Abdul Nazeer asked Bhat to approach the Gujarat High Court with his plea. On October 4 last year, the apex court dismissed his wife Shweta Bhat's plea, challenging the police probe and his judicial custody in a 22-year-old case of alleged planting of drugs to arrest an advocate, and said he could approach an "appropriate forum" for relief. The apex court had held it was not appropriate for it to interfere in the ongoing investigation. Bhat was suspended in 2011 on charges of remaining absent from duty without permission and misuse of official vehicles and later sacked in August 2015. ED calls Robert Vadra again for questioning on Saturday

Vadra was on Thursday questioned for the second consecutive day in the same case. His questioning started at around 9.20 am.Later at around 9.20 pm, his wife and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi reached the ED office. Thereafter, the duo headed back to their residence in their heavily guarded convoy as per their entitlements.Vadra's lawyer KTS Tulsi alleged that the ED was leaking information about its questioning of Vadra, Congress president Rahul Gandhi's brother-in-law. SC orders Tejashwi to vacate govt bungalow for deputy CM, fines him Rs 50,000

The Supreme Court Friday dismissed former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav's plea, challenging the Patna High Court order asking him to vacate a government bungalow meant for the deputy chief minister, and ordered him to shift to an accommodation for the leader of the opposition. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the RJD leader for challenging the government decision. Yadav, who is currently the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, had filed an appeal against the Patna High Court judgement turning down his petition challenging the Bihar government order to vacate his bungalow to make way for Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi.

A special court convicted two men in a murder case under the gangsters act and sentenced them to five years imprisonment. Body of missing girl found in UP

A 12-year-old girl, who was missing since three days, was found strangled to death in Kapur Ghar village in the district, police said Friday. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Alok Sharma said her body was found Thursday evening outside her house. It was sent for postmortem and an investigation into the case was underway. AP: Woman, daughter-in-law found dead

Two women were found dead lying in a pool of blood from an apartment in Bondilipuram of Srikakulam town of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.The woman Jonabai and her daughter-in-law Mehanti Begum were discovered lying in a pool of blood by Mehanti's son on his return from school to their Sindhuja Apartments here, police said." The boy Jaffer returned from school and found the door of the house locked. When he got no response from his mother and grandmother he entered the house with a spare key he went and got from his aunt's residence. Upon finding the dead bodies lying in a pool of blood, he called his father Jilani who along with neighbours informed the police," Panasa Reddy, Additional SP, Srikakulam district said. The bodies of the two woman have been sent for post mortem he said."The family is claiming that Rs 5 lakh and some gold is missing from the residence. We suspect that the motive of the killing was robbery. The case is under investigation," Reddy said.

Jayaram Chigurupati death case: Matter transferred to Hyderabad from Andhra

Nurse held after she attempts to throw acid on ex-doctor husband

A nurse attempted to throw acid on her ex-husband, who is a doctor, at a Sessions Court where they got divorced on Thursday. The woman later consumed poison but is currently out of danger and has been arrested by the police.The couple identified as Aruna and Adarsh used to work in the same hospital.Srinivasulu, SHO, West Police Station, told ANI: "The victim had come to the court to attend his divorce case when the accused came with acid and tried to pour it on him. Fortunately, the victim escaped from the attack but some sprinkles of acid fell on him."Furthermore, Srinivasulu informed that after throwing acid, the accused consumed poison. He said, "We have sent her to the hospital for treatment and now she is out of danger and has also been discharged.
