MP BJP starts postcard drive to get convicted child rapists

The Madhya Pradesh BJP Tuesday launched a drive under which postcards will be sent to the Chief Justice of India seeking setting up of fast track courts to hear appeals of those sentenced to death for raping minors, so that the execution can be carried out quickly. The party said 26 men had been convicted by courts for such crimes in the state and given the death sentence but the execution is yet to be carried out as their appeals were pending. "The Central government has enacted a stringent law for the rape and murder (of minors), but the execution of sentence is delayed as their (accused) cases (appeals) are pending in courts," the postcard reads. "Twenty-six rapists have been sentenced to death in Madhya Pradesh. Fast track court should be set up so that the death penalty could be executed at the earliest. Why hesitate to face trial in graft case: HC to ex-minister

The Madras High Court Tuesday orally observed prime facie material was available against former Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji, facing a corruption case, and asked why he was hesitating to face the trial. Justice Anand Venkatesh made the observation during the hearing of a petition by Balaji seeking to quash the FIR registered against him over an alleged job racket in the state road transport corporation. The judge noted that when prima facie material was there and a case had been registered, why the petitioner was hesitating to face the trial. After senior counsel for the petitioner A R L Sundaresan sought time to argue the case, the Judge adjourned the matter to June 18 for final hearing. The FIR had been registered on a complaint by Ganesh Kumar, an employee of the State Transport Corporation, who alleged he had given Rs 95 lakh to a relative of Balaji, then the transport minister, for getting jobs in the corporation, but the latter had cheated him.

Nalini's right to appear in person to argue plea cannot be denied: Madras HC

The Madras High Court Tuesday observed that the right of Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, to appear in person to argue on her plea cannot be denied. Nalini had approached the court seeking its permission for her personal appearance to argue on the petition seeking six months ordinary leave to make arrangements for her daughter's marriage. Responding to a question raised by the court on the state government's impediment in allowing her to appear in person, the government advocate sought time to get instructions from the government on the security arrangements to be made while escorting her to be produced before the court. A division bench of justices M M Sundaresh and M Nirmal Kumar after observing orally that her right to appear in person to argue her case cannot be denied, posted the matter for further hearing to June 18. MP minor's rape-murder: Accused sent to judicial custody for a day

A special court here on Tuesday sent a man accused of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl to judicial custody for a day. Vishnu Bamora (35) was produced before Special Judge Suresh Singh by Kamla Nagar police, said Sudha Vijay Singh Bhadoriya, Special Public Prosecutor for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Bamora was arrested from Mortakka village in Khandwa on Monday morning for raping and smothering the minor girl in Kamla Nagar area here in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The girl went missing after she came out of her house on Saturday evening to make a purchase, and her body was found near a drain in the area Sunday morning. The SPP on Monday told PTI that the court was informed that the police was ready to file a charge sheet in the case by Wednesday. Bhadoriya said Bhopal District Bar Association vice president Reena Verma has told her that lawyers have decided not to appear for the accused.

APDCL pays compensation to family of man who died of

Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APDCL) has handed over a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to the wife of a man who died of electrocution in Dhemaji district after Assam Human Rights Commission took suo moto cognizance of the matter. The commission had taken cognizance of the incident following a news item published in a local daily on July 18, 2017 which reported that Anidhar Saikia of Narauthan Balijan Gaon in Dhemaji district was electrocuted while climbing a tree and he later succumbed to his injuries, an AHRC release said on Tuesday. The AHRC issued notice to the managing director of APDCL to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances leading to Saikia's death, it said. Two men arrested in Karnataka for 'abusive' video against Deve Gowda family:Police

Two men have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody in Karnataka for allegedly posting a video abusing former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and his family on social media. On a complaint from a ruling JD(S) office-bearer, the two, said to be party supporters, were arrested Saturday under IPC sections 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), police said. The duo was peeved at the poor performance of JD(S) in the recent Lok Sabha election and blamed "family politics" of the JDS supremo Gowda for it, police said. Toddler pulled out from borewell shaft died 'a few days back': Autopsy report

The post-mortem report of two-year-old Fatehvir Singh, who was pulled out from a 150-foot-deep unused borewell shaft Tuesday morning after an unsuccessful rescue operation that lasted over four days, suggested that he died "a few days back". The child was rushed to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here, but the doctors declared him brought dead. A panel of doctors, comprising Dr YS Bansal and Dr Senthil Kumar from the Department of Forensic Medicine at the PGIMER, conducted the post-mortem examination. "The post-mortem findings are suggestive of death occurring a few days back. A detailed post-mortem report is being prepared and would be handed over to the investigating officer (police official)," the PGIMER said in a statement issued in the afternoon. HC asks Centre to give pay revision benefits to Delhi prosecutors

The Delhi High Court has asked the Centre to give prosecutors all the benefits which have been recommended by the Delhi government regarding revision of their pay scales. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon (since retired) and Justice Brijesh Sethi said that in view of the categorical direction of the Supreme Court in the Delhi-Centre power tussle, the Union of India has no other option but to accept the recommendations made by the Government of NCT of Delhi in its totality and implement them. The bench noted that the orders passed by it on September 3, 2015 and February 1, 2019, in the matter of granting revision of pay scales to the prosecutors as recommended by the Delhi Government have not been implemented yet. Journalist Prashant Kanojia be released immediately, right to liberty 'non-negotiable': SC

Directing immediate release on bail of journalist Prashant Kanojia, arrested for allegedly making objectionable comments on social media against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Supreme Court Tuesday said fundamental right to liberty is "sacrosanct" and "non-negotiable". The apex court clarified however that granting bail to Kanojia cannot be construed as approval of the posts or tweets. The order is being passed in "view of the excessiveness of the action taken", it said, making it clear that the proceedings against the journalist will go on as per the law. American rapper Nicholas Diego Leanos, popularly known as Lil Xan is being investigated for an alleged assault with a deadly weapon on a man.The investigation comes after the alleged victim called out Xan for terming Tupac's music "boring" last year. Bombay HC directs police to file case against Munde in illegal land purchase case

The Bombay High Court Tuesday directed police to file a case against Dhananjay Munde, the leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, in connection with alleged illegal purchase of government land in Beed district. A division bench of Justices T V Nalawade and K K Sonawane gave the directions on the petition filed by one Rajabhau Phad. According to the petition, the land at Pus village in Ambajogai tehsil of Beed belongs to the government and was given to the Belkhandi Math in Beed as gift when Ranit Wyanka Giri was its mahant. However, as per law, the land cannot be transferred without the government's permission. But after the death of Giri, his heirs transferred the land in their names and claimed that they are its owners and the government was not informed about it. MQM founder Altaf Hussain arrested in London over 2016 hate speech

Altaf Hussain, the exiled leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), one of Pakistan's biggest political parties, was arrested on Tuesday by Scotland Yard in London over a hate speech in 2016 in which he asked his followers to take the law into their own hands. The Metropolitan Police would only confirm that a man in his 60s had been held in an investigation into speeches related to his MQM party. The MQM has dominated politics in Karachi for three decades because of its support in the densely populated working class neighbourhoods of Urdu-speaking Muhajirs, descendants of Muslims who migrated from India when Pakistan was created in 1947. Minor girl found dead outside her house in UP, 4 neighbours booked

A 12-year-old girl was found dead outside her house here, following which four neighbours were booked in connection with the case, police said Tuesday. Lalganj Circle Officer Ramesh Chandra said the girl had gone to a pond on Monday to keep an eye on the family's fishes, but in the evening her body was found outside the house. Following a complaint by her father, a case was registered against the four neighbours, including Basantlal, in Sangipur police station in the night, he said. Two brothers held for abetting suicide of sister's lover

Two brothers have been arrested for allegedly driving a man to suicide as they disapproved of his relationship with their sister in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said Tuesday. According to police, the accused Chandanprasad Goud and Kundanprasad Goud, both 25, had threatened the victim Appa Patil (21), a resident of Sathe Nagar in Bhiwandi, of dire consequences if he continues his relationship with their sister on June 8. Hours after he was threatened, Patil allegedly hanged himself with a nylon rope from a tree in Mothawada locality of the town, a police officer said. A case was registered against the Gouds under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the complaint lodged by the victim's mother. Delhi court convicts AAP MLA Manoj Kumar for obstructing polling process

A Delhi court has convicted AAP MLA Manoj Kumar for obstructing election process at a polling station in Kalyan Puri area of East Delhi during 2013 assembly polls. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal held Kumar guilty of obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions, punishable under 186 IPC, and disorderly conduct in or near polling stations, section 131 of Representation of the People Act. "The evidence led by the prosecution is reliable and trustworthy and that the prosecution has been able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt as far as the commission of offence under section 186, IPC and section 131 of the RP Act. Bihar businessman guns down wife, daughter; kills self

A cloth trader allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his licensed pistol, after gunning down his wife and minor daughter in Kidwaipuri area, police said on Tuesday. The trader's son (4), whom he also shot at, is stated to be in critical condition in hospital, they said. "Prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide.
