Bihar BJP minister's brother thrashes chemist for 'not standing up'

BJP national vice president and former Bihar minister Renu Devi's brother Pinu was seen thrashing a chemist at a medical shop in Bettiah for allegedly not standing up to show him respect.In the video of the incident which took place on June 3, Pinu can be seen entering the medical shop to buy something and suddenly asking the chemist to stand up and show him respect. Knowing of the shopkeeper's denial to do so, Pinu can be seen brutally slapping the chemist and later forcefully dragging him outside the shop by his collar.Pinu was later seen taking the chemist away in a car.However, the accused's sister Renu Devi chose to stay away from the matter, claiming that she is not in talking terms with her brother anymore."I never encourage wrong behaviour. 3 Kottayam hospitals booked for 'denying' treatment to 62-year-old H1N1 patient

The Kottayam Police has registered a case against three hospitals, including Kottayam Medical College and two other private hospitals after a woman claimed that her father died as he was denied treatment by the three hospitals.The case was filed based on a complaint lodged by K Renimol, who alleged that her father, Jacob Thomas - an H1N1 patient - was denied treatment by the three hospitals and died due to the alleged negligence.Speaking to media on Thursday, Renimol, a native of Idukki, said, "I don't want this to happen to anyone. I went to three hospitals and my father was alive since we were giving him chest compressions. But no one could save my father as no one attended to him. We were just sent from one hospital to another. Extradition hearing for Huawei executive set for January

A Canadian court says an extradition hearing will begin in January for a top executive of the Chinese tech company Huawei wanted by the U.S on fraud charges. British Columbia's Supreme Court on Thursday accepted a proposal by Meng Wanzhou's defense team to start her hearing January 20, more than a year after she was taken into custody at Vancouver's airport. Defense lawyer David Martin says the schedule could allow the case to wrap up within two years, which he says would be a "record" for such a complicated case. The Huawei CFO wasn't in court Thursday. The United States has charged Meng with lying to banks about Huawei's dealings with Iran in violation of U.S. trade sanctions. Both Meng and Huawei deny any wrongdoing.

2 held for ramming vehicle into group of people after Eid prayers in Delhi's Shahdara: Police

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly ramming a car into a group of people as they came out of a mosque after offering Eid prayers in east Delhi's Shahdara area on Wednesday, police said on Thursday. The car involved in the accident was stolen, they said, adding that it was being driven by a 26-year-old man. There was no report of any casualty in the incident. The accused Shahrukh, a resident of Govindpura in Jagatpuri, and his 24-year-old female associate were arrested subsequently, the police said, adding that a car and a scooter were seized from their possession. Shahrukh, allegedly a drug addict, was involved in 27 cases of vehicle theft and robbery, they said. Bike taxi firm director held for investment fraud

The Noida Police on Thursday arrested a director of a motorcycle taxi firm, Bike Bot, in connection with an investment fraud, officials said. Vijaypal Kasana is one of the directors and franchise head of Garvit Innovative Promoters, more popular as Bike Bot, and he was arrested from Meerut by a joint team of the Economic Offences Wing and SWAT of the Noida Police, they said. "The company has at least 33 cases registered at police stations in Gautam Buddh Nagar on complaint by investors," a police spokesperson said. "Kasana had got injured in a road accident and was admitted to a hospital in Meerut yesterday (Wednesday). Based on this input, the Noida Police today arrested him from Meerut," the official said. Woman commits suicide by jumping into river in J&K, body recovered

A 28-year-old housewife allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a river in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Thursday, police said. The woman was identified as Naseema Bagum, a resident of Doda's Alni-Gangota village and wife of Irshad Hussain, they said. "We have witnesses who saw her jump into the river," Superintendent of Police Bhadarwah Raj Singh Gouria said. "After getting information, a police party immediately reached the spot, and after hectic efforts, fished out her body from the river with help from locals," he said. Gouria said inquest proceedings have been initiated under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code to ascertain the reason behind the woman's extreme step.

HC relief for Kalanithi Maran in 'Enthiran' story case

The Madras High Court quashed the criminal proceedings against Sun Pictures Managing Director Kalanithi Maran on Thursday over allegations that superstar Rajinikanth-starrer "Enthiran", produced by the company, was based on a story of another writer. Justice B Pugalendi of the Madurai bench of the high court passed the order, allowing a petition by Maran, who was the second accused in the case pending in a magistrate's court. "So far as Kalanithi Maran is concerned, he is a mere producer and has nothing to do with the story and hence, the criminal proceedings under the Copyright Act and the proceedings under IPC section 420 (cheating) against him are quashed," the judge said. In a common order, he, however, refused to quash the proceedings against the film's director, S Shankar, under the Copyright Act, holding that a prima facie case was made out against him as there were similarities between the storyline of the complainant and the plot of "Enthiran". Furnish details of info requirement requests made to social media firms: HC to TN govt

The Madras High Court Thursday ordered the Tamil Nadu government to furnish details of requests made to social media companies such as Facebook and WhatsApp seeking their support in criminal investigation. The interim order was given on a petition seeking linking of Aadhar with email IDs and user accounts of social media platforms for detection of cyber crimes. A bench of Justices S Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad also directed the government to inform it about the approximate time frame within which the draft intermediary guidelines in this regard will be notified. Earlier, Tamil Nadu Advocate General Vijay Narayan had said that under the draft guidelines, there were provisions which required social media companies to notify the authorities regarding any crimes committed through their platform within 72 hours. Delhi HC CJ-designate stresses on compliance of court orders

The chief justice-designate of the Delhi High Court, Justice D N Patel, has stressed upon compliance of court orders to ensure that the rule of law prevails in the country. In an interview with PTI, Justice Patel asserted that compliance of court orders must be ensured and for that, at times, the courts would have to pass harsh orders. "If the orders of courts are not complied with, there will be nothing like a rule of law, there will be a rule of chaos and we cannot accept this," he said. Justice Patel, who was named as the acting chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court last month, was appointed as the chief justice of the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. No terror angle has been found in the seizure of explosive-like materials from a long-distance train here, but a search has been launched for a man booked in the case, Railway and police officials said Thursday. Seven men including cop held for extorting money from truckers

Seven men including a police constable were arrested in Goa Thursday for allegedly posing as Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) officials and extorting money from truck drivers passing through the state. The accused constable -- whose name was not disclosed -- was attached to Canacona police station in South Goa district, a senior police official said. The state ACB started a probe after several truck drivers arriving from Gujarat complained that they were being harassed on the state border late at night. They were stopped for 'vehicle checking' by some men who claimed to be ACB officials and who demanded money to 'release' the trucks after 'attaching' them, he said. A team led by inspectors Gurudas Kadam and Tukaram Chavan of the ACB probed the case and busted the racket, he added.

The body of a man was found near the Signature Bridge in northeast Delhi, police said. According to a senior police officer, no injury marks were found on the body and it was sent to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for postmortem. Malegaon blast: Bailable warrant against absentee witness

A special Mumbai court conducting trial in the 2008 Malegaon blast case Thursday issued a bailable warrant against a witness for failing to appear before it. Judge V S Padalkar also chided the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for calling only one witness a day, saying the trial cannot proceed quickly at this rate. The NIA officer and the special public prosecutor told the court earlier in the day that the witness (name not disclosed), who was supposed to appear this week, could not be contacted even on his mobile phone. The judge noted that the witness was aware of the court proceedings and still remained absent. The court issued a bailable warrant in the sum of Rs 5,000 against him. "The accused have been asked to appear once a week... It is the duty of the NIA officer to call for witnesses to remain present before the court for recording evidence," the judge said. Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested in separate cases after "heroin-like" substance was recovered from their possession in Jammu district Thursday, officials said. A police party arrested Masoom Ali alias Kala at Makhanpur in Bishnah after he was found in possession of a heroin-like substance, they said. Special courts convict mother-son and a restaurateur for power theft

Three persons, including a woman and her son, were convicted for power theft by special courts in the city, a spokesperson of power discom BSES said. The mother-son duo were convicted by the special court (electricity) at Karkardooma recently. They were found to be involved in power theft at their Shashi Garden (East Delhi) residence in 2011, he said. "Accused Sanjeev Jain impersonated as a tenant of his mother. The court awarded him fine of over Rs one lakh and simple imprisonment of one year for power theft. For impersonation, the court gave him a prison term of six months and a fine of Rs 10,000," said the BSES spokesperson.
