Bathinda gangrape case handled in 'inefficient manner': NCW
The NCW said on Thursday that the Bathinda gangrape case was handled in an "inefficient manner" by police and there was delay in registering an FIR due to "political pressure". According to reports, Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal had presented the rape survivor in public on Monday, claiming that she had been denied justice due to connivance of Bathinda Police and some local Congress leaders. Acting on her complaints, the National Commission for Women had constituted a two-member fact-finding team headed by Shyamala S Kundar, a member of the NCW, to inquire into the matter. The team went to Bathinda and met the rape survivor, her mother, Bathinda district collector, Bathinda SSP and officials of the District Legal Service Authority in Bathinda. 3 held for stealing car during test drive in Delhi
Three persons were arrested for stealing an SUV from a car dealer after throwing chilli powder in his eyes while they were out for a drive in east Delhi's Preet Vihar, police said on Thursday. Niraj Rajput (19), Abhishek Nagar (20) and Aman Bainsla (19), all residents of Faridabad, also stole the victim's mobile phone before pushing him out and fleeing with the vehicle, they said. The incident was reported on May 31 by the victim who deals in the sale and purchase of pre-owned cars, police said. In his complaint, he reported that the trio, posing as potential buyers, had visited his dealership in east Delhi looking for a Mahindra Scorpio SUV. After selecting a particular model, a test drive was arranged and the victim accompanied the trio, the complaint said. Telangana: BJP worker clubbed to death, six held
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was allegedly clubbed to death by a group of men, the police said on Wednesday.The deceased has been identified as Prem Kumar Reddy.The police said that as per initial probe, Srikanth Reddy, son of a local TRS leader who had fought and lost the local body elections, was behind the murder.Srikanth along with five others have been taken into custody for further investigation.The state BJP unit has claimed that political rivalry is the reason behind the barbaric act and has accused TRS for the same. Newly elected BJD MLA, Saroj Kumar Meher, who drew flak after a video purportedly showing him forcing a junior PWD engineer to do sit-ups in public went viral, Thursday apologised for his action, while claiming that he did it to assuage public anger. In the video, the Patnagarh MLA is seen reprimanding the engineer over alleged shoddy road construction work in his constituency in Bolangir district and asking him to do 100 sit-ups in the middle of the road. Two brothers hacked to death in Odisha
Two brothers were allegedly hacked to death by a man following a heated argument in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Thursday, a police officer said here. The accused, identified as Udhab Nayak, has been arrested and a probe has been initiated in the case, he said. Udhab had reportedly visited the brothers in an inebriated condition, at Kasia village in Bamebari police station area of the district, he said. It is not clear what led to the argument between them, but Udhab attacked Sambhar Nayak, one of the victims, with an axe, causing him to collapse on the floor, the officer said. The other brother, Karmu, who tried to rescue his brother was also not spared by Udhab, he said. The accused was handed over to police by neighbours and local people, who rushed to the Nayak brothers' household on hearing them scream. The brothers were taken to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared them "brought dead", the officer added.
Builder shoots self dead over property dispute
A builder allegedly shot himself dead with his licensed pistol over a property dispute in the presence of his family members here, police said Thursday. Naveen Jain was living in a separate house and had come to her mother's place at Gupta Colony in Dharampura Wednesday, asking her to divide the ancestral property equally, said SP (City) Shlok Kumar. Naveen had a heated argument with his family members and allegedly shot himself dead, the SP said. The police recovered a suicide note from his mobile phone. The statement of all family members would be recorded and action would be taken against those named in the suicide note, the SP added. An FIR had been lodged by victim's son Rachit Jain against his uncles Pawan Jain and Pankaj Jain, the SP added.

Senior BJP leader and ex-Union minister Vijay Goel on Thursday offered financial assistance to Delhi's first woman auto-rickshaw driver Sunita Choudhary who was robbed of Rs 30,000 earlier this week. Goel presented Choudhary a cheque of Rs 30,000, saying he did so as serving others gave him "self satisfaction". "She has been driving auto-rickshaw for the past 15 years and lost her money which she had saved for buying a new auto. I was impressed by her spirit to fight for her bright future," Goel, a former Delhi BJP president, said. He said that he will use his monthly salary as a Rajya Sabha MP to help needy people. CBI arrests 3 persons in SSC paper leak case
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday arrested three persons in connection with the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) paper leak scam case.The accused were identified as Akshay Kumar Malik, Dharmendra and Sandeep Mathur. The trio was produced before a court and remanded in police custody till June 10."Akshay was the mastermind of the scam and used to leak the paper while the other two used to lure candidates. They are private persons and are not linked to Sify Technology Pvt. NIA files chargesheet in arms theft case from PDP's Aijaz Ahmad Mir
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday filed a charge sheet in the case relating to the theft of seven AK rifles and one pistol along with ammunition in September last year from the official residence of PDP leader and ex-Wachi MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir here.A case was initially registered by the Jammu and Kashmir Police at Rajbagh police station, Srinagar against Adil Bashir Sheikh, who was deployed as a SPO at Mir's residence. The case was subsequently taken over by NIA for investigation, the investigative agency said in a statement.During an investigation, NIA arrested accused Rafique Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Pulwama, on December 10, 2018. Three more held in gold ornaments robbery case
Three more people were arrested Thursday for their alleged involvement in robbing a jewellery shop employee of 840 grams gold ornaments worth Rs 16 lakh, police said. With this, the number of those arrested in the case has gone up to seven. Four people, including a woman, were arrested Wednesday and 690 grams of gold recovered. The gang engineered an accident here to rob the employee of the gold here Tuesday, police said. Farm loan fraud: ED conducts raids in Maha against politician's firm that used dead farmers' IDs
The ED conducted searches at multiple locations in Maharashtra on Thursday in connection with an alleged Rs-328 crore farm loan fraud, perpetrated using identities of "bogus and dead farmers" by a firm linked to a politician, whose party is an ally of the ruling BJP in the state. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided 10 locations in Mumbai and Parbhani district as part of a criminal case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against Ratnakar Gutte, the chairman of Gangakhed Sugar and Energy Private Limited (GSEPL), it said. Gutte is a member of the Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP), a BJP ally in Maharashtra, and father of Vijay Gutte, who directed the recently-released Hindi film, "The Accidental Prime Minister", based on a book of the same name and about the two-term tenure of former PM Manmohan Singh. A Thai court has sentenced former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to two years in prison over his handling of a state lottery programme he initiated while in office more than a decade ago. His conviction Thursday by a branch of Supreme Court was for malfeasance, for carrying out a policy judged to be in violation of the law or official regulations. Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006 and has been absent from Thailand since 2008, when he fled to avoid serving a two-year prison term on a conflict of interest conviction. He was sentenced in April to three years' imprisonment for ordering Thailand's Export-Import Bank to make a loan to Myanmar which was used to pay a satellite communications company then controlled by him and his family.

Two men arrested for robbing elderly at his home in northwest Delhi
Two men were arrested for allegedly robbing an elderly after barging into his home in northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar, police said Thursday. Dhanpat Rai Gupta, 85, and his wife were at home when the incident occurred on April 20, they said. The accused -- Karan (20) and Amit Kumar (19) -- were nabbed and a motorcycle used in commission of the crime was recovered from their possession, the police said. In his complaint, Gupta reported that three men aged about 20-22 years robbed him of around Rs 1 lakh, some silver coins and important documents from an almirah after entering into his home as the main door was left open, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Vijayanta Arya said. In the CCTV fooatge, the accused were seen coming on a motorcycle but their images were not clear, she said. Following a tip-off, Karan was apprehended and on his instance, Amit was also nabbed, the officer said. However, the remaining one accused is still absconding, the police said.
SAT rejects NSE plea for bank guarantee to Sebi in co-location case
Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) Thursday rejected NSE's plea for allowing it to provide bank guarantee instead of transferring Rs 687 crore from escrow account to Sebi in co-location case. The tribunal, however, granted an additional week to the exchange to comply with the May 22 order which directed NSE to transfer Rs 687 crore to Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) within two weeks from the escrow account. "In our view, we do not find any reason to modify our order dated May 22, 2019. The appellant (NSE) should transfer the amount which is already kept in the escrow account as per the interim order of Sebi to be transferred to Sebi account as per our order dated May 22, 2019," SAT said while rejecting NSE's plea. Earlier, the regulator had asked NSE to deposit revenue from its co-location facility in an escrow amount as an interim measure. Several people, who were coming out of a mosque after offering Eid prayers had a close shave on Wednesday after a stolen car driven by a 26-year-old man rammed into the group in east Delhi's Shahdara area, police said. The accused Shahrukh, a resident of Govindpura in Jagatpuri along with his 24-year-old female associate were later arrested, police said Thursday. Police said the accused was involved in 27 cases of vehicle thefts and robbery. No injury was reported in the incident. "During investigation, police identified Shahrukh with the help of CCTV footage and arrested him, along with his female associate on Wednesday night from the area near Kashimiri Gate," said Meghna Yadav Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara).
