Days after assuming office, Jagan rejigs administration in AP

Less than a week after assuming the office of Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has undertaken a major reshuffle of bureaucrats in Andhra Pradesh.While some key officers were transferred to new posts within the first two days of assuming office, a number of officers were given new roles on Tuesday.Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary L.V. One held for trying to extort money from Gurgaon bizman

The Gurgaon Police has arrested a man for allegedly trying to extort Rs 10 lakh from a businessman by using the name of a dreaded gangster, an officer said. The accused was identified as Ajay, a native of Haryana's Rohtak district and a "bad character" in police records, he said. Ajay, along with two others, hatched a plan to extort money from a local air conditioner trader living in upscale New Colony locality by using the name of dreaded gangster, Kaushal, ACP of Crime Branch Gurugram, Shamsher Singh, said. The businessman lodged a complaint on June 1, alleging that he was getting death threats over phone, he said. "The accused threatened him to kill the complainant if he did not pay Rs 10 lakh. They also mentioned that their gang leader was Kaushal," the ACP said. Since the matter was very sensitive, the case was immediately transferred to the crime branch, he said. Women lawyers want greater participation in judiciary

Women lawyers Tuesday called for greater participation of women in the judiciary and presence of marginalised sections of society in the legal system. They were speaking at a panel discussion organised onthe65thanniversaryof the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). The topic of discussion was Judicial Accountability and Women. Kripa, a Supreme Court lawyer, narrated her experience when she was once arguing a case in the Madras High Court. "I had short hair at that time and the judge said I find your haircut more interesting than your arguments. He did not even once feel that he had made a sexist or derogatory remark," she said. She cited other instances when she faced discrimination and called for greater participation of women in the judiciary. Man killed inside 7th-floor flat past midnight; one arrested

A 38-year-old man was killed at his residece in the early hours of Tuesday in Antop Hill area here, police said. A hotelier from Pune was arrested in the case late at night. The incident took place around 2.30 am when the victim, Anand Narayan, was alone in his seventh-floor flat in Panta Galaxy building, a police official said, adding that his neighbours alerted police after hearing his cries for help. Narayan, a former marketing officer with a news channel, was found lying in a pool of blood with his throat slit. He was rushed to government-run Sion Hospital where he was declared dead before admission, the official added. CCTV grabs showed three persons entering the building around 2 am. Late at night, police detained Sarang Patharkar, a hotelier from Pune, for questioning, and later arrested him. It was not yet clear what role Patharkar allegedly played in the crime and what could have been the motive.

Boston Police: Man fatally shot in busy downtown area

Boston police say a man has died after a daytime shooting not far from the city's busy Prudential Center. A suspect is in custody following the shooting Tuesday morning near a hotel at the intersection of Huntington Avenue and West Newton Street. Boston Police Commissioner William Gross says the victim was shot several times and died after being taken to a hospital. Police did not immediately identify the victim or the suspect. Several streets in the downtown area were blocked off, and police urged pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area.

Nepalese man held for molesting 4-year-old girl in Manesar: Police

A 20-year old Nepalese man was arrested for allegedly molesting a four-year-old girl in Manesar here, police said on Tuesday. According to the police, the incident occurred on Monday, when the accused, Vishnu, who stayed in the same neighbourhood as that of the victim, took the girl to his room and allegedly molested her. "On the basis of a complaint from the victim's mother lodged at the Women's Police Station in Manesar, Vishnu was arrested from his hideout on Monday night," Gurgaon Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Subhash Bokan said. "The accused has confessed to his crime and has been booked under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act," he added.

3 cops suspended after drug peddlar escapes from custody in J-K

Three policemen were suspended Tuesday after a drug peddlar escaped from custody in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, officials said. Those suspended included a sub-inspector, a SPO and a constable, they said. Two people were arrested after police seized 90 kg of poppy from a truck, which was on its way to Punjab from Srinagar, in Sallan area, SSP Kathua Shridhar Patil said. Sagar Singh (driver) and Harjeet Singh, both residents of Ludhiana in Punjab, were arrested and a case was registered against them, he said. One of the two accused persons gave police the slip on Tuesday when the two were being taken to a court in Hira Nagar, the SSP said.

Probe against 2 policemen for beating up ganja smugglers

The police started an investigation on Tuesday after a video showing two policemen beating up two alleged ganja smugglers in Koraput district went viral. The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Koraput district, Kanwar Vishal Singh, has asked the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jeypore to conduct the inquiry into the incident. "We have initiated an inquiry and details will be known once we complete the process. Probe is on to ascertain the circumstances in which the incident took place," the SDPO of Jeypore, Sagarika Nath, said. In the video, two policemen seen beating up two ganja smugglers with belt and stick, a police officer said. They police had intercepted a vehicle carrying ganja near Doraguda under the jurisdiction of Boipariguda police station on Tuesday and arrested two persons, while two others managed to escape from the spot, the officer said.

6 policemen suspended in Tonk's tractor driver death case; victim's body handed over to kin

Six policemen, including a station house officer, were suspended on Tuesday for allegedly thrashing a tractor driver fatally in Rajasthan's Tonk district on May 28, a senior police officer said. Uniara Police Station in-charge Manish Charan, head constable Rajesh and constables Bhagwan Gurjar, Sanwara Jat, Ramavtar and Laksmichand were suspended, Tonk district SP Chunaram Jat told PTI. Guj: 2 held with gold worth Rs 8.20 cr at Ahmedabad airport

Two persons were held Tuesday at Ahmedabad Airport for allegedly smuggling 24.5 kilogrammes of gold bars worth Rs 8.20 crore, Customs officials said. While their names were not disclosed, these officials said one was a contract employee of a ground handling agency working at Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport, while the other was a passenger, adding that the former was helping the latter get the gold out of the terminal. "The passenger arrived here on a flight from Dubai on Tuesday morning and exited the terminal through the green channel. Before leaving the airport, the passenger, as per his plan, handed over the gold bars, worth Rs 8.20 crore, to an employee of the ground handling agency," a Customs department release said. Dabholkar murder case: Court denies CBI further custody of lawyer, aide

A court here on Tuesday turned down a CBI request seeking further custody of advocate Sanjeev Punalekar and his assistant Vikram Bhave, arrested in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, and sent them to judicial custody for 14 days. The agency did not present any fresh grounds for seeking their custody, the court said. Punalekar, who had represented some of the accused in the Dabholkar murder case of 2013, and Bhave were arrested on May 25 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the same case. Seeking further custody of the duo, Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Suryawanshi said the CBI had recovered some crucial data, including names and contact numbers, from Punalekar's laptop and mobile phone, and it wanted to interrogate him further based on these leads. The "Forensic Psychology Assessment" and "Forensic Statement Assessment" tests of Punalekar indicated that he was deceptive, the prosecutor claimed. Surat fire: 3 govt officials, 1 builder held, total arrests

Four more persons were arrested Tuesday in connection with the fire at a commercial complex in Surat Sarthana area on May 24 which killed 22 youngsters in an art and craft coaching centre there, police said. The fire had engulfed the four-storeyed Takshashila Arcade and a preliminary probe had revealed that use of highly inflammable materials and tyres, which doubled up as chairs in the coaching class, caused the fire to spread rapidly. Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma Tuesday said investigations had revealed that eight air-conditioners were on in the coaching centre despite it having no legal electricity connection. Bailable warrant issued against Union minister Tomar in defamation case

A local court Tuesday issued a warrant against Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar in a defamation case filed by a Congress leader for his alleged objectionable remarks against Rahul Gandhi in 2016. Chief Judicial Magistrate R K Singh issued the bailable warrant against the minister as the latter failed to appear before the court on Tuesday, as directed by it on May 1. Tomar's lawyer Narendra Trivedi said he had filed a petition under CrPC Section 205 to exempt the minister from appearance, but the court issued the warrant. Trivedi said he would move the Jharkhand High Court against the warrant by the lower court. Guj man held for clicking pictures of women swimming

A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly clicking photographs of women swimming in a private pool close to his house in Vadodara, police said Tuesday. Akash Patel was arrested late Monday night after one of the women swimming in a pool in a villa in the city's Gotri area approached police, Inspector PK Rao said. "Patel's balcony overlooks the swimming pool and the complainant has alleged that he was clicking photographs using his mobile phone. Despite being told to stop, he continued and also abused some of the women," Rao informed. He said Patel was charged under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 294 (obscene acts) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Man arrested for killing wife over suspicion of illicit relationship

A 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife in northwest Delhi's Jahangir Puri after he suspected her of having an illicit relationship, police said Tuesday. The juvenile nephew of the accused, a resident of Jahangir Puri, was also apprehended for his alleged involved in the crime, they said. The accused, Balender Poddar, left home for his native village in Sehrsa district of Bihar five-six months ago after a fight with his wife as he suspected her of cheating on him, police said. The man returned home from his native village on March 21 with an intension to kill her. Lookout notices to be issued against 8 Guj cops for custodial

The process of issuing lookout notices against eight Gujarat policemen in connection with a custodial death that took place in Surat has begun, a senior official said Tuesday. The eight, including an inspector and sub-inspector, from Khatodara police station, are accused of torturing three burglary suspects in custody on Friday, leading to the death of one, identified as Omprakash Pandey, from brain injury on Saturday night. Pandey died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
