Woman dies of fever, H1NI suspected

In a suspected case of swine flu, a 42-year-old woman died at a hospital here early Tuesday following low grade fever. The woman's samples have been sent to the Manipal Institute of virology for confirmation if she was suffering fromH1NI, a respiratory disease caused by influenza virus, district medical authorities told PTI. The woman, hailing from Anikkad in Pathnamthitta, was being shifted from a hospital in the district to the Kottayam medical college hospital, when she died, they said. The state is on a high alert as a 23-year-old college student has been infected by the Nipah virus which had claimed 17 lives last year.

HC stays case against Tamil magazine editor

The Madras High Court on Tuesday stayed proceedings in a lower court against a Tamil magazine editor in a case filed against him for publishing articles allegedly disparaging Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit. Granting the interim relief to R Gopal, the editor of 'Nakkheeran', Justice N Anand Venkatesh observed it was the first case after the country's independence wherein the court has been called upon to consider whether a publication by itself will have the effect of overawing a Governor so as to prevent him from exercising his lawful powers and duties. Gopal was arrested on October 9 last year under Section 124 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which relates to "assaulting President, Governor etc with intent to compel or restrain the exercise of any lawful power", triggering a controversy. However, he had walked free within hours after a court rejected the police's plea for his remand and released him on a personal bond. The case had been filed on a complaint from the Raj Bhavan

Army man posted in J-K held for killing MP woman

An army subedar has been arrested for allegedly killing his 24-year-old girlfriend in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, police said Tuesday. The incident occurred in Gubrel village falling within Lavaghoghri police station limits, an official said. Superintendent of Police Manoj Rai identified the accused as Raman Dehariya (30), an Army Subedar posted in Jammu and Kashmir. On May 31, a half-naked body of a 24-year-old woman was found in a farmland outside Gubrel village, about 35 kilometres from the district headquarters, the SP said. Dehariya, who was on leave and staying in his native village, was detained on the basis of suspicion after an initial probe, Rai said, adding that the army man later confessed to killing the woman with a sharp-edged weapon. Rai said Dehariya has claimed he was in a relationship with the woman for some time now but was not ready to get married as demanded by the victim.

Car runs over man walking on footpath, kills him

A 43-year-old man was killed while walking on footpath when a speeding Mercedes hit him near the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Central Mumbai, police said Tuesday. The driver of the car, son of a diamond merchant, was arrested after the accident which took place on Keshavrao Khade Road in Tardeo Monday night, a police official said. The victim was identified as Rajeshprasad Lochanrag, resident of Walkeshwar area and a carpenter by profession. The Mercedes, which was coming from the opposite direction, first hit Rajeshprasad, who was out to buy vegetables, the police official said. Then it hit another car, he said. The driver of the other car, however, escaped unscathed. Rajeshprasad was rushed to a hospital but declared dead before admission. Tardeo police arrested Chaitanya Adani (24) who was allegedly driving the Mercedes. Adani's father is a diamond merchant, the official said. Adani was produced before a court which granted him bail. Indian who fled UK after sexual attack jailed for rape in Britian

An Indian man, who fled to India in 2017 after a sexual assault on a woman in the UK, has been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for the rape. Ajay Rana, 35, was found guilty of raping the woman in the back of his housemate's car in the town of Lowestoft in Suffolk, eastern England, after offering her a lift on December, 9, 2017. He then fled to India on December 13 claiming he was visiting his ill mother. He was sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court in Suffolk after being found guilty of rape following a two-week trial and was also ordered to sign the sex offenders' register indefinitely. Justice Prashant Kumar appointed as Jharkhand High Court acting chief justice

Justice Prashant Kumar was on Tuesday appointed as the acting chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court as the incumbent Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel has been appointed as the chief justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Patel is likely to take charge in the Delhi HC on June 7. Patel was appointed as the acting chief justice of the Jharkhand HC last month following the elevation of the chief justice Aniruddha Bose to the Supreme Court.

Ukraine cops arrested over drunken shooting of 5-year-old boy

Ukraine on Tuesday arrested two policemen on suspicion of shooting dead a five-year-old boy while drunk in a case that has sparked outrage over lingering corruption and impunity in the force. The National Bureau of Investigations said the shooting took place on Friday when the two patrol officers were drinking together in a yard in the city of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky, 70 kilometres (40 miles) southwest of Kiev. While shooting at metal cans, they "hit a five-year-old boy," the investigators said in a statement. The boy, named by local authorities as Kyrylo Tlyavov, died of head injuries in hospital on Monday despite surgeons operating twice to try to save his life. Tadvi suicide: Crime Branch seeks custody of 3 accused doctors

The Mumbai Crime Branch Tuesday approached the Bombay High Court, seeking custody of three senior doctors of a civic hospital arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a junior colleague. A special court had last Friday remanded the three doctors -- Hema Ahuja, Bhakti Mehere and Ankita Khandelwal -- to judicial custody till June 10. The Crime Branch's petition, seeking their custody for interrogation, will be heard on June 6, the prosecution said. The trio, attached to the B Y L Nair Hospital here, were arrested last week on charges of abetment of suicide of their junior colleague, Dr Payal Tadvi. Father axes son to death after scuffle

A 60-year-old man has allegedly axed his son to death after a scuffle over some issue in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred at Dhaturiya Kalan village in Pirawa area on Monday night. There was a scuffle between Ram Singh Nayak and his son, Mathura Lal Nayak, 35, over some issue before dinner, following which the former allegedly hit his son on the head from behind with an axe, an officer said. Mathura Lal Nayak's mother, who was cooking food, rushed out and found him lying in a pool of blood outside the gate, Pirawa police station incharge Ramkishan Meghwal said. Woman, son killed in road accident in Navi Mumbai, 1 arrested

A woman and her son were killed after being run over by a car late Monday night in Seawoods in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said. The incident took place on Palm Beach road in Sector 50 of Nerul, Inspector Ravindra Patil of NRI police station said. "The victims were standing on the pavement near their scooter and talking when a car rammed into them. Amol Patil (25) died instantly. His mother Lalit (55) succumbed while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. The woman's three- year-old granddaughter fortunately escaped without injuries," he informed. He identified the driver of the car as Amir Ismail (25) and said a case has been registered under section 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Dabholkar murder: Court denies CBI further custody of lawyer, his aide; sends them to jail

A court here Tuesday turned down a CBI request seeking further custody of advocate Sanjeev Punalekar and his assistant Vikram Bhave, arrested in the Narendra Dabholkar murder case, and sent them to judicial custody for 14 days. Punalekar, who had represented some of the accused in the Dabholkar case of 2013, and Bhave were arrested on May 25 by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the same case. Seeking further custody, Special Public Prosecutor Prakash Suryawanshi said the CBI has recovered some crucial data, including names and contact numbers, from Punalekar's laptop and mobile phone, and it wanted to interrogate him further based on these leads. 'Forensic Psychology Assessment' and 'Forensic Statement Assessment' tests of Punalekar indicated that he was deceptive, the prosecutor claimed. Punalekar and Bhave were in CBI's custody for 11 days. BJP leader files defamation complaint against Kejriwal, Sisodia; Court to hear matter on Jun 6

Delhi BJP leader Vijender Gupta on Tuesday filed a defamation complaint in a court here against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia for allegedly "maligning" his image by accusing him of attempting to kill the AAP chief. INL worker arrested for linking AIADMK leader with Pollachi

A worker of the Indian National League (INL) was arrested here Tuesday on charges of linking a ward-level AIADMK functionary with the Pollachi sexual harassment case and making derogatory remarks on social media, police said. Bilal was arrested based on a complaint by AIADMK's IT wing secretary Riyaz Khan, they said. He allegedly linked Muji, AIADMK secretary of a ward in Kuniyamuthur here, to the sexual harassment of several women in Pollachi in the district. HC declines to interfere in ED proceedings against hotel controlled by Aditya Talwar

The Delhi High Court has declined to interfere with the ED proceedings to confirm the provisional attachment of a hotel in Aerocity, saying the company running it was being controlled and managed by Aditya Talwar, son of lobbyist Deepak Talwar, both of whom are facing money laundering allegations. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had provisionally attached Holiday Inn, worth over Rs 120 crore and operated by Wave Hospitality Ltd, in connection with a money laundering case against the Talwars. Muzaffarnagar riots: 5 arrested over youth's killing

Police Tuesday arrested five people accused of killing a man whose death was a trigger for the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013. According to the prosecution, the five -- Prahlad, Bishan Singh, Tendu, Devender and Jitender -- were arrested when the police reached their homes in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district to execute a court order to attach their properties. Six policemen including a station house officer were suspended Tuesday for allegedly thrashing a tractor driver fatally in Rajasthan's Tonk district on May 28, a senior police officer said. Maha ACB arrests Palghar cop for bribery

A sub-inspector with Nalasopara police in neighbouring Palghar district was arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe, a Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau official said Monday. PSI Siddesh Shinde (43) demanded Rs 10,000 from a man for not arresting him in a case filed at Nalasopara police station, the Thane Unit ACB official said. "After we received a complaint from the victim, we laid a trap on Monday evening and caught Shinde red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 10,000," he said.
