Mumbai's first metro corridor, the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line, has completed 11 years of operations, having transported more than 111 crore commuters since its launch in 2014. In a release issued earlier this week, Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) said that of the 12 stations on the 11.8-km corridor, Ghatkopar recorded the highest footfall with 30 crore commuters, followed by Andheri with 23 crore and Saki Naka with 11 crore. The current weekday ridership stands at around 5 lakh, with a peak of 5.47 lakh commuters, it added. The agency said that Metro Line 1, or Metro One, has made more than 12.6 lakh train trips, covering 1.45 crore km while maintaining 99.99 per cent punctuality and 99.96 per cent train availability. President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said India has the world's third-largest metro network spanning over 1,000 km and emphasised that efforts to streamline urban transportation are underway. Addressing a joint sitting of Parliament, which marked the start of the Budget session, Murmu said that metro projects in Delhi, Pune, Thane and Bengaluru, along with the recently launched Namo Bharat Rapid Rail on the Ahmedabad-Bhuj route, are shaping the cities of a 'Viksit Bharat'. To accelerate the journey towards 'Viksit Bharat', it is essential to make Indian cities future-ready, she said. In this direction, the government is focused on modernising urban amenities and making them energy-efficient. Simultaneously, the foundation is being laid for the development of new cities, she added. Trains will operate at intervals of 30 minutes until 6 am to ensure smooth travel for commuters, after which regular timetable will be followed for the rest of the day, it added. With the success of the Kochi Water Metro, efforts are on to replicate the eco-friendly and innovative water transport model in 18 locations nationwide, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd said. KMRL, which operates and maintains the water metro, said that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has assigned it the task of conducting a feasibility study to assess the potential for similar water metro systems in diverse regions. "With the recent approval of its Board of Directors to form a consultancy wing, KMRL has formed an in-house committee to lead the initial work. If needed, external experts will be brought in to strengthen the process," it said in a release on Saturday. The first six-coach train for Delhi Metro's Phase-IV expansion arrived here on Friday, a statement said. The train set, manufactured by Alstom at its facility in Sricity near Chennai, was inaugurated on September 23 in the presence of Delhi Metro Railway Cooperation (DMRC) and Alstom delegates, the statement said. It has now been stationed at Delhi Metro's Mukundpur depot, where it will undergo a number of tests required for its statutory certification for revenue service as a part of established rules and protocols, it said. Under the RS-17 contract, DMRC will be receive a total of 312 metro coaches (52 trains) for the Phase-IV priority corridors, i.e. Majlis Park to Maujpur, Janakpuri West to R K Ashram Marg and Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity.
