PM should resign if EC says there are discrepancies in electoral rolls: TMC

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet should resign and the Lok Sabha be dissolved if the Election Commission says there are discrepancies in the electoral rolls. Banerjee, who is the national general secretary of TMC and considered the number two in the Mamata Banerjee-led party, said that the "EC cannot selectively say" that the voter list is fine in some states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, but not in West Bengal, Bihar or Tamil Nadu. "If SIR (special intensive revision) of electoral rolls is conducted, it should be held across the country and the first step should be the resignation of the prime minister and his cabinet and the Lok Sabha has to be dissolved," he said. The TMC leader claimed that if the present government has been elected on the basis of the same voter list, then the legitimacy of the central government is null and void. Lok Sabha polls in the country were held in mid-2024. "If

PM inaugurates flats for MPs, urges them to celebrate festivals there

Inaugurating a complex of multi-storey flats for parliamentarians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday suggested that the residential premises housing the MPs should celebrate India's different festivals and compete on cleanliness. Taking a swipe at his rivals, he said some people may link Kosi, the name of one of the four towers christened after different rivers, to the upcoming Bihar assembly polls but he will tell such "small-minded" people that the tradition of naming towers after rivers unites people. The new complex in Baba Kharak Singh Marg close to Parliament House comprises 184 type-VII multi-storey flats. Modi said there had long been a shortage of residences for MPs and first-time members had to struggle to get a house. However, no new residence was built for Lok Sabha MPs between 2004 and 2014, when the Congress-led UPA was in power, and his government has constructed around 350 of them, he noted. "The India of the 21st century is as sensitive as it is eager for ...

India moving fast towards becoming the world's third-major economy: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India is moving fast towards becoming the third major economy in the world and this momentum was achieved through the spirit of "reform, perform and transform." During the past 11 years, India's economy has grown from the 10th position to the top 5 globally, and is rapidly progressing towards becoming one of the top three economies, he said. The Prime Minister's comments come days after US President Donald Trump's jibe targeting the Indian economy. On infrastructure growth, the Prime Minister said in 2014, metro rail services were confined to just five cities. Today, metro rail networks span over 1,000 kilometers across 24 cities, making India the third-largest metro network globally.
