TMC wins 22 LS seats, BJP makes deep inroads in Bengal

OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik resigns after election debacle

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik Friday announced his resignation from the post in the wake of the party's electoral debacle in the state. Landslide victory for BJP in Arunachal Pradesh assembly polls

The BJP has comfortably crossed the 31-seat mark in Arunachal Pradesh to claim simple majority in the 60-member Assembly, while its rival Congress has bagged just four seats so far, the results made available by the Election Commission showed. US sees Pakistan-based LeT threat to it in Afghanistan: Pentagon report

The US considers Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as one of the greatest threats to it and allied forces in war-torn Afghanistan, where at least 300 fighters from the terror group are active, a Pentagon report has said. The LeT, designated a global terror organisation by the US and the UN, was responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people. Among the 20 prominent terrorist organisations active in Afghanistan, LeT ranks fifth in terms of fighters along with al Qaeda and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, stated the Pentagon report, 'Lead Inspector General for Operation Freedom's Sentinel', for the quarter ending March 31. The report said the Department of Defence "identified the Haqqani Network, the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba as groups that present the greatest threat to US and allied forces in Afghanistan". In his maiden Lok Sabha poll, Prasad defeats 'shotgun'; wins Patna Sahib seat

Fighting a high-stakes battle, BJP veteran Ravi Shankar Prasad has emerged victorious in his first Lok Sabha election, defeating his colleague-turned opponent Shatrughan Sinha by more than 2.84 lakh votes. A four-time Rajya Sabha MP, Prasad wrested the Patna Sahib seat in Bihar from Sinha, a rebel BJP leader who is also known as 'shotgun'. Prasad garnered 6.07 lakh votes while Sinha, a former Bollywood star who joined Congress earlier this year, managed only 3.22 lakh votes. The 65-year-old Prasad has held various ministerial portfolios, including that of Law and Justice, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Atal Bihari Vajpayee governments. When Modi swept to power in 2014, Prasad was first given the ministries of Telecom and Information Technology and Electronics. Later, he was divested of the telecom portfolio. Currently, he is a Rajya Sabha member and holds the portfolios of Law and Justice as well as Electronics. He became a Rajya Sabha member for the first time in 2000 .

BJP gets more than 60 per cent vote share in U'khand

The BJP, which retained all the five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand with huge victory margins, also got more than 60 per cent of the vote share this time, the highest by any party in the history of the hill state. The BJP had captured 55.30 per cent of the total votes cast in the state in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls but this time got 61.0 per cent votes, increasing its vote share by 5.70 percentage points. The increase in the BJP's vote share despite a voter turnout of 61.50 per cent which was a little less than in 2014 when the state had recorded 61.67 per cent polling makes it all the more creditable for the party. Over 5,000 voters opted for NOTA in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Over 5,000 voters opted for the none of the above (NOTA) button in elections to the Muzaffarnagar parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh, election officials said. Ten candidates were in the fray for Muzaffarnagar seat which was retained by BJP's Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, who defeated his nearest rival and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh by 6,526 votes. According to the election officials, 5,061 voters opted for NOTA here. While Balyan secured 5,73,780 votes, Singh polled 5,67,254 votes. Independent candidate Neel Kumar got 4,884 votes -- less than what was polled for NOTA.
