Flood mitigation work progressing satisfactorily, says TN CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday said the stormwater drainage work, initiated as part of the flood mitigation in Chennai, and desilting work are progressing satisfactorily and would be completed soon. The Chief Minister who has been showing interest in completing the works before the North-East Monsoon invigorates, said he had inspected several areas in south Chennai last week and visited many localities where the stormwater drainage works were taken up in north Chennai. "Nearly 70 to 80 percent work has been completed in south Chennai. Today I inspected north Chennai where the works were affected due to rains. The work will be completed in about 15 days or one month," the Chief Minister told reporters after the inspection. He inspected the execution of stormwater drainage works and desilting activities that were taken up at estimated cost of Rs 167.08 crore in the Greater Chennai Corporation areas by the Water Resources and Highways departments. Tamil Nadu govt promulgates Ordinance prohibiting online gambling, games

The Tamil Nadu government promulgated an ordinance to prohibit online gambling and regulate online games in the State and said an online gaming authority will be established to exercise powers conferred by this Ordinance. A gazette notification issued by the government on October 3 and the Ordinance promulgated by Governor R N Ravi on October 1, said the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of online gambling and regulation of online games Ordinance, 2022, will come into force on the date notified by the government. Online games and gambling ruined families, led to suicides, caused gaming addiction affecting public health, disturbing social order and prejudices the maintenance of public order. Hence the need for the present Ordinance, it said. Tamil Nadu CM Stalin files nomination to contest for DMK president post

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday filed his nomination papers seeking to contest the president's post in the ruling DMK, setting into motion the intra party election. Stalin, who visited Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters here, submitted his papers for the key position to which he is most likely to be elected unopposed at the party's general council meeting here on October 9. Several senior leaders including party's general secretary and State Minister Duraimurugan, treasurer T R Baalu, Parliamentarians: Kanimozhi and A Raja besides DMK youth wing secretary and legislator Udhayandhi Stalin were present when the Chief Minister filed his papers. Director Mani Ratnam's big screen spectacle film "Ponniyin Selvan-I" has raised over Rs 300 crore in its worldwide gross box office collection, the makers said Friday. 3 boys die, 11 hospitalised over suspected food poisoning in Tamil Nadu

Three boys died and 11 others are undergoing treatment in the government hospital following suspected food poisoning at a home for destitute in nearby Tirupur on Thursday, officials said. The boys had rice mixed with 'rasam' and laddu for dinner on Wednesday. Some of them vomited and had dysentery. On Thursday morning, they had breakfast and their condition deteriorated and some fell unconscious, officials said. As all of them were admitted to a private hospital and they were later shifted to government hospitals in Tirupur and Avinashi, they said. However, three boys aged between 8 and 13 years died at the hospital, while others are undergoing treatment, with three being admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tirupur District Collector S Vineeth, who visited the hospital, said the samples were collected and sent for examination, following preliminary reports of food poisoning. Ford executes settlement agreement with workers in Tamil Nadu plant

Ford India, the subsidiary of the US car maker Ford on Saturday said it has concluded negotiations on the 'severance settlement package' with the employees of its manufacturing plant near here, a year after it announced that it would exit the Indian market as part of the company's 'restructuring exercise.' Ford India Transformation Officer Balasundaram Radhakrishnan handed over the updated settlement agreement to the office bearers of the Chennai Ford Employees Union representing the 2,592 employees on Friday, a statement from the company said. "The severance settlement agreement, signed between Ford and the Union today (Friday) is an important milestone and a win-win for everyone involved. Tamil Nadu registers 522 new Covid-19 infections, no death in last 24 hours

Tamil Nadu on Friday reported 522 new COVID-19 infections pushing the caseload to 35,83,104, the health department said. The death toll remained unchanged at 38,046 as there were no fresh fatalities. Chennai witnessed a marginal rise with 104 cases as compared to 98 on Thursday, Chengalpet added 50, Coimbatore 38 while the remaining was spread across other districts. As many as 533 people recuperated from the virus in the last 24 hours, aggregating to 35,39,562 that left 5,496 active infections, a medical bulletin said. Eighteen districts reported new cases below 10 while Ariyalur and Tiruvarur reported zero new cases, each. The state capital leads among districts with 2,375 active infections and overall 7,90,497 coronavirus cases. A total of 15,386 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of tests so far to 6,94,25,293, the bulletin said.

Tamil Nadu to soon come out with electronic hardware policy: CM Stalin

Tamil Nadu would soon come out with a new electronic hardware policy aimed at boosting domestic hardware production and exports, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Friday. The State has been attracting investments not only in manufacturing of smartphones but also in computers, electronic parts, telecommunication equipment, home appliances, he said after inaugurating a manufacturing unit of Pegatron Technology India Pvt Ltd in neighbouring Chengalpet district. "The government considers the electronics department as an emerging sector and soon a Tamil Nadu electronic hardware policy will be rolled out to boost domestic production and exports," Stalin said. He unveiled a plaque at Mahindra World City, about 45 km from here, to mark the inauguration of the manufacturing facility set up at an investment of Rs 1,100 crore that would generate 14,000 jobs. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regretted on Thursday that learning of Sanskrit is discouraged in Tamil Nadu. She said in her early schooling and going till college, learning Sanskrit was not easy at all because of the "political environment in which we lived." "And it's not as if I lived in a foreign country. I lived in Tamil Nadu. Sanskrit was discouraged and I think even today they discourage," Sitharaman said. SC to hear pleas against TN, Maha's bull-taming sport Jallikattu on Nov 22

The Supreme Court on Thursday said it would hear on November 22 a batch of pleas challenging Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra laws allowing bull-taming sport 'Jallikattu' and bullock cart races. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice K M Joseph was told by senior advocate Anand Grover, appearing for the petitioners, that the amendments with respect to Jallikattu are unconstitutional. The bench, also comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and C T Ravikumar, said it would take up the matter in November. The top court had earlier said that the petitions challenging the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, needed to be decided by a larger bench since they involved substantial questions relating to interpretation of the Constitution.
