Scientists at Cambridge have finished designing the 'brain' of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), the world's largest radio telescope. When complete, the SKA will enable astronomers to monitor the sky in unprecedented detail and survey the entire sky much faster than any system currently in existence, researchers said. The SKA's Science Data Processor (SDP) consortium has concluded its engineering design work, marking the end of five years' work to design one of two supercomputers that will process the enormous amounts of data produced by the SKA's telescopes. "We estimate SDP's total compute power to be around 250 PFlops -- that's 25 per cent faster than IBM's Summit, the current fastest supercomputer in the world," said Maurizio Miccolis, SDP's Project Manager for the SKA Organisation. "In total, up to 600 petabytes of data will be distributed around the world every year from SDP -- enough to fill more than a million average laptops," he said. The SDP consortium, led by the ...

San Francisco is on track to become the first US city to ban the use of facial recognition by police and other city agencies, reflecting a growing backlash against a technology that's creeping into airports, motor vehicle departments, stores, stadiums and home security cameras. Government agencies around the U.S. have used the technology for more than a decade to scan databases for suspects and prevent identity fraud. But recent advances in artificial intelligence have created more sophisticated computer vision tools, making it easier for police to pinpoint a missing child or protester in a moving crowd or for retailers to analyze a shopper's facial expressions as they peruse store shelves. Efforts to restrict its use are getting pushback from law enforcement groups and the tech industry, though it's far from a united front. Microsoft, while opposed to an outright ban, has urged lawmakers to set limits on the technology, warning that leaving it unchecked could enable an oppressive ...
Scientists have created the world's smallest pixels, by trapping particles of light under tiny rocks of gold, that could be used for new types of large-scale flexible displays, big enough to cover entire buildings. The colour pixels, developed by scientists from the University of Cambridge in the UK, are compatible with roll-to-roll fabrication on flexible plastic films, dramatically reducing their production cost. It has been a long-held dream to mimic the colour-changing skin of octopus or squid, allowing people or objects to disappear into the natural background. However, making large-area flexible display screens is still prohibitively expensive because they are constructed from highly precise multiple layers. According to the research developed in the journal Science Advances, at the centre of the pixels is a tiny particle of gold a few billionths of a metre across. The grain sits on top of a reflective surface, trapping light in the gap in between. Surrounding each grain is a ...

The Neil Armstrong Space Exploration Gallery opened May 6 in the Cincinnati Museum Center. It celebrates the legacy of Apollo 11 and its crew members. The exhibit focuses especially on Neil Armstrong, the mission's commander and the first person to step foot on the moon. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the exhibit includes interactive elements, original artifacts and equipment, and an immersive theater. A jacket Armstrong wore during the Apollo 11 mission and a moon rock are among the many artifacts.
