Useless to have password expiration policies, says Microsoft

The annoying reminders by the IT team to change your system password are pointless, after all. Tech giant Microsoft has admitted that periodic password expiration rules are not required and make systems more vulnerable to hacking. In its draft release of security configuration baseline settings for Windows 10, Microsoft proposed dropping the password expiration policies. When humans are forced to reset their passwords, they often write it down where others can see them, or make an obvious alteration to the existing password, making it easier to steal or detect.Microsoft explained that removing password expiration policies does not mean changing requirements for minimum password length, history, or complexity. It is instead recommended that companies promote good password practice, and use multi-factor authentication.

Artificial mother-of-pearl created using bacteria

Scientists have used bacteria to create synthetic mother-of-pearl that is tough but bendable, and could be used as medical implants or for constructing buildings on the Moon in future. Nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl is an exceptionally tough, stiff material produced by some mollusks and serving as their inner shell layer. It also comprises the outer layer of pearls, giving them their lustrous shine. However, while nacre's unique properties make it an ideal inspiration in the creation of synthetic materials, most methods used to produce artificial nacre are complex and energy intensive. Scientists at the University of Rochester in the US invented an inexpensive and environmentally friendly method for making artificial nacre using an innovative component: bacteria. The artificial nacre is made of biologically produced materials and has the toughness of natural nacre, while also being stiff and bendable. India's data should be "stringently domiciled": Vijay Shekhar Sharma

Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma Thursday said data should be "stringently domiciled" to ensure that such information of consumers stays protected. "If anyone wants to take the data, they should take it on a sample basis," Sharma said speaking at the TiE India Internet Day 2019. Paytm, in the past too, has supported the view that critical data like financial transactions need to be stored locally. Sharma said companies that argue that data needs to be taken to other geographies for better product development should look at doing so in India itself. "Why not instead bring the software to this part of the world when there are enough development centres here. So think about bringing the code here and running it," he said. Sharma also asserted that there is a huge talent pool that can meet this demand. Data sovereignty is an issue that the Indian government is also looking at addressing. Based on the recommendations of Justice Srikrishna panel, a data protection bill was crafted that is
