Most areas in Odisha get respite from sweltering heat wave

Most parts of Odisha experienced considerable respite from the sweltering heat wave on Thursday with sharp fall in the temperature following norwester rains. The temperature breached 40 degree Celsius in only seven places, much lower than 15 towns where the mercury had jumped the 40 degree mark on Wednesday, according to the Meteorological Centre here. As a few areas in western Odisha recorded high temperature, Titlagarh and Sundargarh in the region were the hottest places in the state with 43 degree Celsius, it said. The temperature in both Talcher and Malkangiri stood at 41.8 degree Celsius, while it was 40.5 degree in Bolangir, 40.2 degree in Sonepur and 40 degree in Jharsuguda. The temperature in state capital Bhubaneswar was 34.7 degree Celsius on Thursday from 42.4 degree measures on Wednesday. However, relative humidity in the city stood at 98 per cent, it said. Max temp increases in HP; Una continues to be hottest at 42.2 deg Celsius

After slight relief, heatwave conditions continued to prevail in Himachal Pradesh as maximum temperatures rose by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius Thursday with Una continuing to be the hottest place at 42.2 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Department said. However, the minimum temperature decreased by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius after the rainfall accompanied by hailstorm lashed several parts of the hill state on Wednesday night, the Met department said. Dalhousie received 44 mm rain on Wednesday night, followed by Kufri 21 mm, Kalpa 18.8 mm, Manali 18.2 mm, Keylong 15 mm, Bilaspur 9 mm and Kangra 4.2 mm. The maximum temperature in Bilaspur was recorded at 39.9 degrees Celsius, followed by 39.2 degrees in Hamirpur, 38.4 degrees in Kangra, 36.6 degrees in Sundernagar, 36.1 degrees in Mandi and 35 degrees Celsius in Solan. Hot weather conditions prevail at most places in Haryana, Punjab

Hot weather conditions continued to prevail at most places in Haryana and Punjab on Thursday even as overnight light rains lashed some parts of both the states. Chandigarh, which was hit by high-velocity winds accompanied by brief spell of rain on Wednesday night, recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, up by two notches against normal limits, a Meteorological Department report said here. Hisar in Haryana registered a high of 43 degrees Celsius, up by two notches while Ambala's maximum settled at 40.9 degrees Celsius. Narnaul recorded a high of 41 degrees Celsius. Ludhiana in Punjab registered a maximum of 41.6 degrees Celsius, up by three notches against normal. Patiala recorded a high of 41.6 degrees Celsius, up by three degrees while Amritsar's maximum settled at 41.4 degrees Celsius, two more than normal limits.

Wet outfield delays start of India-New Zealand game

Inclement weather and wet outfield has delayed the start of the ICC World Cup game between India and New Zealand here Thursday. An inspection was scheduled for 3 pm IST but was put off after it started raining again. The outfield is pretty wet and is expected to take time to dry up as there's no sunshine. After heavy showers in the past two days, Thursday has been relatively drier although it remains overcast. Even if the match happens, it is expected to be a curtailed one as there is forecast of intermittent showers through the day.

Light rains, duststorm bring mercury down by 10 degrees in Delhi

Duststorm and light rain brought mercury down by 10 degrees in the national capital, giving much-needed relief to Delhiites who were reeling under intense heat since the last few days. Air quality, however, continued to remain in the poor category. Flight operations at the Delhi International Airport were suspended for around 35 minutes in the evening due to poor visibility, airport officials said. A 15-year-old boy was injured after a wall of his house collapsed due to the duststorm in northeast Delhi's Usmanpur. The boy, Sagar, has been shifted to GTB hospital where he is being treated. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung observatory was recorded at 41.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above season's average. However, the mercury fell sharply to 29.8 degrees Celsius at 7.30 pm after the thunderstorm hit the city. Bad weather forces Khattar's chopper to land at Rohtak

A helicopter with Haryana Chief Minister M L Khattar on board had to make an unscheduled landing in Rohtak on Wednesday evening due to bad weather. The chief minister's chopper landed here safely, said Rohtak Superintendent of Police Jashandeep Singh Randhawa. Khattar was on his way to Rewari from Delhi to attend a party function there. Due to sudden deterioration in weather, the chopper had to change its route and land in Rohtak, said Randhawa. High-velocity winds and dust-storm hit many areas in Haryana Wednesday evening.

Vayu to make landfall as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm tomorrow in Gujarat: IMD

'Vayu' is expected to make landfall as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm in the south of Veraval and Porbandar on Thursday, the IMD said on Wednesday.MeT Department Director RK Jenamani said, "Very Severe Cyclonic Storm 'VAYU' is about 280 km from the south of Veraval and 360 km from the south of Porbandar in Gujarat. It will cross Gujarat coast between Dwarka and Veraval as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 155-165 kmph around the afternoon of June 13.""Cyclones are naturally formed in the sea and they are formed due to the low pressure of the wind. VAYU has intensified and moved ahead towards North. Vayu's intensity is of a severe cyclonic storm. It is moving in the northern direction. Tomorrow it is expected to touch Gujarat's coast. Heavy rain would take place," he added."We are estimating that what impact can the cyclone have. On June 16 and 17, Delhi would see a rainfall. Our meteorological centre in Ahmadabad is very closely in contact with the Gujarat government.

Heatwave warning for Telangana till June 16

The India Meteorological Department Wednesday issued warning that severe heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets over Telangana on Thursday. The IMD also warned that heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at few places in some districts from June 14 till June 16. It further warned that thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds (30 to 40 kmph) and lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over the state on June 15 and June 16. The IMD advised people not to expose themselves directly to sunlight and take necessary precautions. On Wednesday, Khammam and Ramagundam recorded the highest maximum temperature of 43.6 degree Celsius each in Telangana while Hyderabad recorded 37.7 degree Celsius.

A dust storm and light rainfall in parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday brought respite for residents from scorching heat as the mercury came down a few notches, a meteorological department official said. Jaipur received 3.2 mm rainfall. The maximum temperature in the state capital was 42.8 degrees Celsius, he said. Churu, however, remained the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 47 degrees Celsius, followed by 46.3 degrees Celsius each in Sri Ganganagar and Bikaner, he said. The maximum temperature in Jaisalmer was 45.4 degrees Celsius and 45.1 degrees Celsius in Barmer. The weatherman has forecast another dust storm with wind speed of 40-50 km/hr at several places in the state during the next 24 hours.

Guj: 1.6 lakh people evacuated as Cyclone Vayu inches closer

As cyclone 'Vayu' inches closer to the Gujarat coast and expected to make a landfall Thursday, authorities have so far shifted over 1.60 lakh people from low-lying areas of Saurashtra and Kutch regions. Operations at ports and airports in these regions have been suspended as precautionary measure, officials said. As per the latest weather report, cyclone Vayu, which has turned into a 'very severe cyclonic storm', has changed its course slightly and would now hit Gujarat coast anywhere between Veraval in the south and Dwarka in the west in the afternoon Thursday, officials said. The cyclone is now situated around 280 km south of Veraval, they said. After making the landfall, the cyclone is likely to move along and parallel to Saurashtra and Kutch coast, they said.

Cyclone Vayu: IMD predicts windy day in Maharashtra

The Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that very severe cyclonic storm 'Vayu' is now at 280 km south-southwest of the city and the winds over north Maharashtra coast are likely to be 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph.Deputy Director General, IMD, KS Hosalikar said: "Very severe cyclonic storm 'Vayu' is now at 280 km south-southwest of Mumbai.
