Monster cartel charge puts brakes on BMW earnings
German high-end carmaker BMW on Tuesday reported a plunge in profits in the first quarter as it booked a 1.4-billion-euro ($1.6 billion) charge related to an EU cartel probe. Net profits at the group nosedived 74.2 per cent year-on-year, to 588 million euros, the group said in a statement. Brussels' allegation that BMW colluded with Daimler and Volkswagen to avoid competing on emission control technology means "it is probable that the EU Commission will issue a significant fine," the Munich-based manufacturer said. BMW already warned investors when details of the probe were published last month that it would have to set aside at least a billion euros. But the firm said competition authorities are trying "to equate the permissible coordination of industry positions regarding the regulatory framework with unlawful cartel agreements". IOB to sell non-core assets for raising Rs 900 crore in FY 19
Government-owned Indian Overseas Bank has identified 32 assets for sale, including prime properties in Singapore and Hong Kong, to raise about Rs 900 crore in the current financial year 2019-20.In the previous fiscal, it sold six properties -- one within the country and five overseas -- for Rs 129 crore. The bank has initiated the process for sale of the remaining 26 properties valued at Rs 775 crore."The bank is looking at all avenues to improve its capital position and has been actively pursuing monetisation of its non-core assets," said IOB Executive Director K Swaminathan.The bank has also initiated the process of unlocking value from non-core investments valued at Rs 72 crore to augment the capital.In the fourth quarter ending March 31, equity shares worth Rs 261 crore were issued under the Employee Share Purchase Scheme, said Swaminathan. Stock markets gain marginally in early trading
Equity benchmark indices opened higher on Tuesday led by gains in select heavyweights like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HDFC Bank and Hindustan Lever.At the National Stock Exchange, all sectoral indices were in the green except pharma and media.At 10:15 am, the BSE S & P Sensex was up 111 points at 38,711 while the Nifty gained 18 points to 11,616.Among other gainers were Hindalco, Bharti Infratel, Britannia and Power Grid.But stocks of oil marketing companies fell. Bharat Petroleum Corporation slipped 3.7 per cent while Indian Oil was down 2.6 per cent.
