Delhi's Connaught Place saw a 14 per cent annual increase in rentals for retail spaces during the January-March period, while upscale high street location Khan Market witnessed a 7 per cent rise on strong demand from retailers, according to Cushman & Wakefield. Monthly rentals at Connaught Place (Inner Circle) -- a prominent high-street retail location in the national capital -- stood at Rs 1,150-1,250 per square foot during the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 14 per cent year-on-year, the data from real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield showed. Khan Market, one of the costliest high-street locations globally, commanded a monthly rental of Rs 1,600-1,650 per sq ft in January-March, an increase of 7 per cent year-on-year. Cushman & Wakefield said the asking rent (Rs/sq ft/month) is based on carpet area of ground floor vanilla stores. Two days after security scare over an unclaimed bag in Connaught Place, another similar bag has been found at the national capital's commercial hub on Monday, officials said. They said nothing suspicious was found inside the bag but the owner is yet to be traced. According to the officials, the Delhi Fire Service received a call at 1 pm regarding an unclaimed bag and two fire tenders were immediately pressed into service. The local police cordoned off the area near K Block and the Bomb Detection Squad was also called, they said. Police said the bag contained some clothes and it is suspected that somebody left it on the footpath. Another unclaimed bag with clothes was found near N Block in Connaught Place on Saturday. That bag was found to belong to a student and the police had handed it over to him.
Security has been beefed up at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after the airport authorities received an email about a bomb scare, police said on Saturday. Following the threat received on April 29, the CISF and the police got into multiple levels of security sweeps all over the airport. A First Information Report has been registered in Bajpe police station stating that a certain group identifying itself as Terrorisers 111' had sent the emails. The FIR quoting the email has stated that "there are explosives placed in three places in the airport and we expect large scale bloodshed will happen. This warning and threat should not be taken lightly." Commissioner of police of Mangaluru city Anupam Aggarwal has confirmed that the FIR has been registered. Delhi BJP leaders and workers on Sunday staged a protest at Connaught Place in central Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. The protesters used a purported replica model of the Delhi chief minister's newly renovated official bungalow calling it 'Sheeshmahal' and alleging irregularities in its construction. A selfie point with the name 'SharabSeSheeshmahal' was also set up at the protest venue with liquor bottle-shaped cutouts of AAP leaders accused in the alleged excise policy scam. Senior Delhi BJP leaders, including state president Virendra Sachdeva, and the party's Lok Sabha election candidates, MLAs and councillors participated in the protest. The New Delhi Municipal Council on Tuesday conducted a sealing drive in Connaught Place over non-payment of property tax dues, officials said. Five to six shops were sealed, with the drive going on till late evening, the officials said. The drive was carried out in Connaught Place's B, C, D and G blocks. Atul Bhargava, president of the New Delhi Traders' Association, demanded that there should be a uniform tax regime across Delhi. "The NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) should follow the tax regime of the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi). Why are there separate tax regimes?" he asked. He also said the NDMC informed the landlords about the outstanding taxes but never reached out to the tenants, who were caught unawares by the drive.

NDMC Vice Chairman Satish Upadhyay on Saturday said most of the escalators in Connaught Place here were found non-functional during an inspection. He has issued strict instructions to the electricity, civil, security and all the departments concerned, demanding prompt action and enhancing security measures. Upadhyay conducted an inspection of the escalators installed in various subways at Connaught Place and its surroundings in the area of the New Delhi Municipal Council, a statement said. Acknowledging public complaints, he personally assessed the situation, revealing that out of the 22 escalators in the Connaught Place area, connecting to places such as Super Bazar, Statesman House, KG Marg, and Janpath, most of them were found non-functional. He stressed the need for ensuring that visitors, residents, and market traders association members are not inconvenienced by non-functional escalators.
