The Delhi High Court has sentenced a police officer to jail for a day for contempt of court after he arrested a person in breach of the directions of the Supreme Court. Justice Najmi Waziri refused to accept the apology tendered by the Delhi Police officer in the contempt proceedings and stated that personal liberty can be curtailed only by a procedure established by law The High Court also fined the police officer Rs 2,000 and imposed a nominal cost of Rs 15,000 for these proceedings on him, to be paid to the petitioner who suffered incarceration for 11 days. "Keeping in mind that R-3 is a serving police officer with the Delhi Police, that he has served for seven years and may have a long career ahead of him, he is sentenced to simple imprisonment for one day along with a fine of Rs 2,000 as well as nominal costs of Rs 15,000 for these proceedings, to be paid by him to the petitioner within four weeks," the court said in its order passed in December. Over 600 people were fined by the Delhi Police on New Year's eve for violations such as drunk and dangerous driving, officials said on Saturday. Thirty-six challans were issued for drunk driving, 103 for dangerous driving, 370 for driving without helmet, 48 for triple riding and 100 for other violations, according to police. The total number of challans issued is 657, they said. Last year, police had issued 1,336 challans more than double than this year. The numbers are less mainly because a night curfew is in place in the national capital in view of rising Covid cases.
