The Delhi High Court on Thursday formed a committee to conduct surprise checks at Tihar Jail to gather information on the food being served to inmates and the level of hygiene at the prison. The court was hearing a plea by two inmates, including Geeta Arora alias Sonu Punjaban, seeking its intervention to ensure proper food is provided to them and hygiene is maintained in cooking area and canteen. The court constituted a three-member committee and asked it to conduct at least three surprise checks at the high-security prison and submit a report to it. "It would be appropriate to direct a surprise inspection so that information can be gathered regarding the nature of food provided to inmates, nature of food items made available in the jail canteen and hygiene level maintained in the cooking area and canteen," Justice Prathiba M Singh said. She said this while interacting with reporters during an inspection of a waste-to-energy plant at Tughlakabad. Awareness campaigns will be held in all the 250 municipal wards of Delhi to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said on Wednesday. Oberoi said she has given instructions to officials to start the 'DMC (Dengue-Malaria-Chikungunya)' campaign. Mass awareness campaigns will be conducted in all 250 wards with the help of RWAs, local councillors and school students, she said. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is gearing up to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya to keep residents of Delhi safe from these diseases, her office said in a statement. The 'DMC' campaign will be undertaken in all zones to prevent the spread of these diseases, she said. The mayor on Wednesday held a high-level meeting at the Civic Centre with officials of the public health department and deputy commissioners of all zones on this issue. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has raised the annual health licence fee for several businesses, including restaurants, hotels, banquet halls and theatres, and the highest increase is of Rs 5,300 for five-star hotels. The increase ranged between Rs 100 and Rs 5,300 across categories, an NDMC official said. There has been no increase in health licence fee for a few categories of business such as laundry, boiler, hawking and dairy booths, he added. An order was issued on May 6 for the increase in fees with effect from April 1. The health licence fee for a five-star hotel was increased from Rs 75,300 to Rs 80,600, the highest across categories. Some businesses such as meat shops, hawking on cycle, water trolley and ice-cream trolley saw an increase of Rs 100. In the hospitality area, there was an increase of Rs 200 for guest houses with one to 20 beds, Rs 500 for 21-50 beds, Rs 1,000 for 50-100 beds, and Rs 2,300 for ones with more than 100 beds, according to the order. Unseasonal rains and a relatively cool weather in recent days have brought down the power demand in the national capital, officials said on Tuesday. Compared to the corresponding days of May last year, Delhi's peak power demand this year has been lower by up to 40 per cent, a discom official said. Last year, the peak power demand in the first eight days of May ranged between 5,409 MW and 6,247 MW. During the same period this year, the maximum demand ranged between 3,644 MW and 4,634 MW, the official added. "Last May, Delhi's peak power demand crossed 6,000 MW on 20 days, 5,000 MW on 7 days, and 7,000 MW once. Even in 2019, the demand throughout the month ranged between 4,277 MW and 6,461 MW," he added. Comparing the peak demands of April in both years, the official pointed out that the city recorded a peak demand between 4,170 MW and 6,197 MW in 2022 while it tapered off in 2023, with a range of 3,388 MW to 5,422 MW. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said his government is sending a scheme for introducing premium buses on Delhi roads through private aggregators for Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena's approval. He said he hoped the scheme will be approved. "Following the LG's approval, we will share the policy online for seeking public feedback," the chief minister said at a press conference. Kejriwal said the buses, which will be equipped with CCTV cameras, panic buttons and will be air conditioned, will encourage the middle and upper middle classes to use public transport. "The policy stipulates that no bus older than three years will be used by aggregators. Buses purchased after January 1, 2024 will be electric. The seats in the buses will be booked through an app," he said. The booking prices for these buses will be higher than those of DTC tickets and in accordance with the market.
