: An expert panel Thursday recommended to the Kerala government to upgrade the professional qualification of teachers and bring the school education sector under a single directorate, in an effort to revamp it. The committee, headed by M A Khader, entrusted with the task of studying of the redesigning of the school education sector, handed over the report to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his office here. The present Directorate of Public Instructions and Higher Secondary and Vocational Higher Secondary Directorates should be conjoined to form a single directorate to control and coordinate the affairs of the education sector, the panel said. To improve the standard of education, teachers should be professionals and their qualification be upgraded, it said. A section of students of Presidency University on Thursday continued with their sit-in outside the vice-chancellor's office demanding that the authorities revoke the suspension of three students for locking the varsity's main gate on September 10. The Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia said the three students should first offer unconditional apology for their conduct. The agitating students, six of whom were also on an indefinite fast since January 19 are demanding that the varsity authorities immediately revoke the suspension order or share the findings of the inquiry committee, which had recommended the suspension order. The students are holding the sit-in outside the VC's office since Wednesday afternoon. The VC told a press meet in her office on Thursday, the inquiry committee had found the three students took the most active role in bolting the main gate and preventing the faculty and non-teaching staff to enter the campus which led to severe disruption of functioning .
General line teachers in Jammu and Kashmir, who are awaiting their salaries for the past six months, have urged Governor Satya Pal Malik to intervene in the matter. There are over 15,000 such teachers awaiting their wages for the past six months. "We are awaiting salaries for the past six months. We urge the governor to intervene into the matter and decide out fate," a general line teacher of a primary school in Ramban, Mohmmad Younis Katoch, told reporters here. Katoch said the teachers will demonstrate a protest if there demands were not fulfilled. "My wife is in a hospital in Jammu. I have to feed three children and educate them. The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to two of its student leaders for taking out "Tiranga Yatra" on bikes inside the campus.The varsity administration alleged that it had given no permission to carry out the Yatra.The notice issued by the proctor sought a reply within 24 hours failing which ex-parte action would be taken against the student leaders.Omar Saleem Peerzada, Public Relation Officer (PRO), AMU said that the students violated the code of conduct and varsity rules and regulations."There was no permission and their step was illegal. On 26 January and 15 August every year University holds one week programme, the students should participate in that. A man has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing a six-year-old girl in Loni area here, police said Wednesday. "The girl had gone for tuition along with her brother on Monday evening. After returning, she again went outside and didn't return thereafter. Her parents and neighbours searched for her till late night but in vain," they said. On Tuesday morning, when the girl's father was going to offer prayers he discovered his child's body lying in a deserted plot near a mosque, said DIG Upendra Agarwal. The girl was a kindergarten student, and she also would take tuition, the father told the police. The minor was raped strangulated with a scarf by her tutor, officials said. On Wednesday, the tutor Faizul Islam from Alvi nagar was arrested. He confessed to the crime. The autopsy report confirmed the girl was raped. Four science parks and 22 science centres will be established in secondary and higher secondary schools across Jammu and Kashmir, an official said on Wednesday. "As part of quality improvement in education, the Samagra Shiksha will establish four science parks in the secondary and higher secondary schools of the state -- two each in the Jammu and Kashmir divisions," Arun Manhas, Director, Samagra Shiksha, said in a statement here. In addition to the four science parks, 22 science centres will also be established with one such centre in each district, he added. The school education directors in the Jammu and Kashmir divisions had been asked to identify suitable educational institutions in their respective areas for establishing the science parks and science centres, the officer said.

Presidency University Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia held talks with students, agitating over the suspension of three of their batchmates but the talks remained deadlocked till Wednesday night. The students were holding a sit-in outside Lohia's office in the main administrative building and six of them were on hunger strike since January 19. During the talks, the VC insisted that the six withdraw their fast while the students demanded withdrawal of the suspension on three students, one of the agitators said. Otherwise, the authorities should reveal the grounds on which three students were singled out "from hundred others" for closing the main gate on September 10 and put under suspension, he said. The Madras High Court Wednesday directed the Tamil Nadu government school teachers, on an indefinite strike since Tuesday, to return to work considering the interest of the students. A division bench comprising justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam gave the interim direction on a petition by a class XII student opposing the strike. It directed the teachers to join duty not later than January 25 and adjourned the matter to February 18. The members of the Joint Action Council of Teachers Organisations- Government Employees Organisations (JACTO-GEO) have been on the strike since Tuesday, pressing their nine-point charter of demands, including reverting to the old pension scheme and seeking salary arrears. The Delhi government has formed a high-level committee to frame anti-bullying and ragging policy for schools and a mechanism to monitor its implementation, according to an official order. The schools have also been asked to circulate the message - 'bullying is strictly prohibited inside the premises and no such act will go unnoticed or unpunished' - through school magazines and display the message at prominent places in the campus. "In order to have an amiable and teaching-learning conducive environment in the school it is indispensable that they must be free from bullying and ragging. The National Green Tribunal Wednesday slammed the Delhi government for its failure to install rainwater harvesting system in schools and colleges and summoned senior official of the education department with complete records. A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore and expert member S S Garbyal expressed surprise over the AAP government's inability to apprise it about the exact number of schools and colleges in the city.
