After 13 yrs, schools in a naxal-hit village in Sukma reopen

Students in Jagargunda village in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, which bore the brunt of naxal violence, were elated Monday with reopening of government schools after a long gap of 13 years. Jagargunda villagers had left their homes in fear after the launch of the Salwa Judum, the erstwhile anti-Naxal movement, in 2005-06. France delays national school exams as heatwave begins

The French government on Monday said it was taking the unusual step of delaying national school exams scheduled for this week to protect pupils during a heatwave. Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said the Brevet national diploma exam -- a key test for children aged around 14 that was set for Thursday and Friday -- would be delayed until next week. France and other European countries are bracing for record temperatures in an unusually early summer heatwave which could push thermometers over 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) later in the week. Blanquer said the exams will take place on July 1 and 2, when temperatures are expected to have cooled. The decision was taken to "guarantee the security of the pupils", Blanquer added, emphasising that the timetable of the exams would otherwise remain unchanged. Weather forecasters have said the temperatures expected later this week could be the highest in June since 1947.

BJP demands LG disband SMCs, AAP says it's a 'conspiracy' to derail education reforms

The BJP Monday demanded Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal disband management committees in government schools, alleging the ruling AAP was using them for "political" gains in Assembly polls, which are due early next year. Leader of Opposition and former Delhi BJP president Vijdender Gupta claimed that SMCs were operating "illegally" beyond their term. The ruling AAP rejected the charge, saying those seeking dissolution of SMCs wanted to "derail" education reforms being carried out by the Delhi government. Gupta, however, said in a press conference that SMCs have become a "hub" of AAP politics and the Lt Governor should dissolve them. "AAP workers, councilors, office-bearers, MLAs are members of these SMCs. They are politicising the schools and the kids studying there. Their entry in schools should be banned," he said. A controversy erupted recently over the SMCs, with the BJP charging that they were being used to seek votes for the AAP by convening a parents' meet. The education ...
