Tripura govt to bear expenses of 3000 students of BPL families

Tripura government will bear expenses of 3,000 students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families if they want to study in private schools from next academic year, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said Saturday. Nath said children from BPL families earlier could not afford to study in private English medium schools due to high fees, so the state government has decided to bear expenses of 3,000 such students for studying in private schools. "It is clearly stated in Right to Education Act, 2009 that schools have to admit 25 per cent of total students from local poor families at the entry point. Their fees are also specified in the Act. Our government will pay for all expenses of their study in private schools of their choice, Nath told reporters. Right to Education was passed in 2009 but was implemented in Tripura only in 2011 after the state rules were formulated. Village stay programme: Kumaraswamy postpones visit to Afzalpur due to heavy rains

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday stayed put at Chandraki village in Yadgir as his visit to Herur (B) village in Afzalpur taluk of Kalaburagi district was postponed due to heavy rains.Kumaraswamy, who is on a 'Grama Vaastavya' or 'village stay programme', spent the night at the Government Higher Primary School in Chandraki along with other ministers. Teacher cannot be blamed for student's suicide: HC

The Madras High Court Friday ruled that teachers cannot be held responsible for the suicide of students pulled up by them for committing mistakes. It also mooted psychological counselling to students in the age group of 15 to 19 years to help them cope with academic pressure. Justice R M T Teeka Raaman gave the ruling while dismissing an appeal by police against a sessions court's December 8, 2005 order acquitting three teachers of a government school in Kanyakumari district who were charged with abetting the suicide of a class XII student. "When teachers, in the interest of the institution and the students, take stern action against them to correct any mistake or to cultivate good habits and get rid of bad ones, such acts cannot be said to have abetted the suicide," the judge said in his order. International Day of Yoga celebrated at universities

Universities in the national capital celebrated the fifth International Day of Yoga on Friday, with students stretching and bending in different yoga postures. Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Professor Najma Akhtar said the varsity will provide yoga training every day to one group each of boys and girls under the supervision of an instructor. Oppn alleges AAP influencing voters through govt school panels; school-parent interaction suspended

In the wake of allegations by the opposition BJP and Congress that the AAP was influencing voters through management committees of Delhi government schools, the Arvind Kejriwal government on Friday suspended a scheduled interactive session with parents of school children till further orders. Bengal govt ropes in tech varsity to introduce courses in IP

The West Bengal government in association with Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University (MAKAUT) will launch courses in intellectual property from the 2019-20 session. Two courses will be launched and an agreement related to this is expected to be signed soon. "We are launching courses in intellectual property management with MAKAUT. SC upholds penalty of Rs 23.10 cr on FORE school of management for admitting excess students

The Supreme Court on Friday upheld a penalty of Rs 23.10 crore imposed on FORE School of Management by the AICTE for admitting 42 students in excess to the sanctioned seats in 2016. The court said it has been noticed that the educational institutions admit students beyond the numbers permitted putting the future of the students at stake. Kejriwal govt dragging schools in its political game plan: Delhi Congress

The Congress Friday accused the Arvind Kejriwal government of "dragging" schools in its "political game plan" and cited a so-called "circular seeking votes" for the AAP, which was termed "fake" by the ruling party. Significant drop in campus placements in NIFT: Irani

Placements of graduates from 15 National Institute of Fashion Technology's (NIFT) campuses fell significantly in percentage terms for the academic year 2018-19 over the previous year, Parliament was informed Friday. The percentage of graduates from New Delhi campus getting placement fell to 37 per cent in 2018-19, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. There was almost 100 per cent placement in the preceding year. Similarly, the placement percentage reduced to almost half compared to 98 per cent during 2017-18 at the Kolkata campus. Bengaluru's NIFT recorded only 38 per cent placement during 2018-19 as against 97 per cent in the year before. Irani told the Lower House that companies can extend a job offer to students before the on-campus placement. Acceptance of the offer is considered as job placement, she said. Set up in 1986, NIFT was made a statutory institute in 2006 by an Act of Parliament with the President of India as 'Visitor'.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) emerged as the top ranked private university in India according to the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking 2020 released on Wednesday.In the 16th edition of the rankings, Manipal figures in the 701-750 band, up from 750-800 last year, among the 1620 considered universities and 1000 published universities from 82 countries. Plus-II Arts, Commerce & Vocational results declared

Girls outshine boys in Plus-II (Class 12) arts, commerce and vocational education course examinations, results of which were declared by Council of Higher Secondary Education, Odisha here Friday. There was a decline in the pass percentage in arts and commerce streams. While pass ratio in Arts stream was 65.89 per cent against the last year's 68.79 per cent, the pass percentage in commerce this year is 70.26 per cent against 2018 results of 74.91 per cent. The pass percentage in vocational course was 52.62 per cent this time against last year's 52.61 per cent, said School and Mass Education minister Samir Ranjan Dash. Of the total 2,31,150 students who appeared the Plus- II Arts examination, 1,52,323 have been successful. PG medical courses in deemed universities: SC refuses plea for extending counselling time

The Supreme Court Friday refused to extend counselling time for filling up as many as 603 vacant seats in post-graduate medical courses in deemed universities and private colleges saying this would be like "opening a pandora's box". The top court said merely because the seats are lying vacant could not be a ground to grant extension of time and further opportunity to fill up these seats. A vacation bench of justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant dismissed a plea of a society which claimed to represent a large number of deemed universities and colleges running post-graduate (PG) medical courses. The society has sought extension of time to respective medical colleges/deemed universities for carrying out counselling for PG courses since around 1000 seats in these educational institutions are lying vacant. Amendment passed to give quota to Maratha students in PG medical courses

The Legislative Council of the state on Friday passed an amendment in the Socially Economically Backward Class (SEBC) Act 2018, providing 16 per cent reservation to the students of Maratha community in admissions to the post-graduate (PG) courses in medical colleges.The state Assembly on Thursday had passed the amendment in this regard.
