The equi-percentile method employed for the normalisation of scores in CUET-UG has been in use for decades globally and it is a fair mechanism where luck plays no role, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said on Monday. Results for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG, the gateway for undergraduate admissions in over 200 universities, were announced on Saturday. Some candidates have been complaining about their scores being brought down due to normalisation. "First, we must remember that we were required to conduct CUET in multiple shifts in a given subject due to the large number of students participating in the test. For example, if the test is in economics, NTA experts prepare multiple economics papers for use in different shifts. Despite our best efforts, the difficulty level of each paper will slightly differ from the other. Therefore, one needs to use normalised scores instead of scores obtained by a student," Kumar said. "For this purpose, we use a scientific method calle
The National Testing Agency on Saturday declared the results for the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG), which showed that over 22,000 candidates scored 100 percentile. While 5,685 candidates scored 100 percentile in English, 4,850 candidates got a top score in Biology/Biotechnology/Biochemistry, followed by 2,836 in Economics. "The performance of every candidate has been evaluated using the equi-percentile method wherein normalised marks of each candidate have been calculated using the percentiles of each group of students in a given session across multiple days for the same subject," said Sadhana Parashar, Senior Director, National Testing Agency (NTA). "The role of the NTA is confined to the registration of candidates, conduct of the test, hosting of answer keys, inviting challenges, finalising answ

A section of teachers on Friday called on Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, seeking an investigation into the difficulties faced by students due to the Common University Entrance Test and the impact of the paper on the "social profile" of classrooms. In a note flagging several issues, the teachers, including academic council members, alleged that there appeared to be a steep rise in admission of students belonging to the upper-middle economic class due to the CUET. The CUET, conducted by the National Testing Agency, was launched last year for admission to undergraduate programmes. Several universities, including the DU, adopted the CUET despite opposition from a section of teachers. "Since students who belong to the working class are not able to afford highly priced CUET coaching. This is a kind of virtual expulsion of students who belong to working or lower middle-class backgrounds," the teachers mentioned in the letter. They also pointed out that some students prepar

The second day of the CUET-UG recorded 76 per cent attendance even as power fluctuations and crowding delayed the exam at four centres. Over 2.24 lakh candidates were scheduled to appear on the second day of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate admissions. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said, "Today's attendance was approximately 76 per cent, a significant jump from last year. In only four out of 450 centres today, the exam started later than scheduled but was successfully completed. The exam started late due to a couple of reasons, such as power fluctuations in some centres and, in others, students needing to follow staggered entry." "Students were informed in the admit cards to enter the centre in a staggered manner. But in a few centres, since they came late, there was crowding and subsequent delay in the start of the exam. We request the students to come (in a) staggered (manner) to avoid this kind of situation. We have now tak
