Include info about Vajpayee memorial in tourism booklet, HoHo bus itinerary: North Delhi Mayor
North Delhi Mayor Adesh Gupta Tuesday said he has urged the Delhi government to include 'Sadaiv Atal' -- a memorial to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee -- in the tourism information booklet. Gupta said he wrote a letter on Monday to Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in this connection. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last December 25 dedicated the memorial to the nation on Vajpayee's 94th birth anniversary. The former statesman's memorial has been built near the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, where his mortal remains were consigned to flames on August 17. Vajpayee passed away in Delhi on August 16 after a prolonged illness. He was cremated with full state honours. "I have urged the Delhi government to include this place in the literature published for tourists," Gupta said. Indian community in UK pays tribute to Karnataka seer Shivakumara Swamiji
The Kannada community in Britain held a candle vigil condolence prayer for Shivakumara Swamij, who passed away in Karnataka on Monday after a prolonged illness. The candlelight vigil was organised in collaboration with the Lambeth Basaveshwara foundation on Monday. Swamiji, known as 'Walking God' among his countless followers, had donated the foundation stone for the Basaveshwara statue in London. According to Dr Neeraj Patil, the former Mayor of the London Borough of Lambeth, the foundation stone is embedded at the base of the statue. Dr Patil said Swamiji's contribution to social work and eradication of child poverty in India is unparalleled and will always be remembered. The inauguration of National War Memorial has been delayed owing to some pending work, a defence ministry official said on Tuesday, thus ruling out the possibility of throwing it open before the Republic Day. The initial plan was to inaugurate the National War Memorial on January 25 and hold the wreath-laying ceremony there instead of Amar Jawan Jyoti on the Republic Day. But now the Republic Day wreath laying ceremony would take place at Amar Jawan Jyoti, sources said. The Memorial was to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 25, they said. However, due to some pending work it has been postponed and it is likely to be completed in a month, the official said. Indian 'fortune teller' charged with teen sexual assault in Australia
A 31-year-old Indian man purporting to be a "fortune teller" has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Australia, a media report said on Tuesday. Arjun Muniyappa was arrested at Sydney International Airport on Monday night after he tried to board a plane to Singapore, the New South Wales police was quoted as saying the Sydney Morning Herald. Muniyappa approached the 14-year-old girl and offered her free fortune telling services before sexually assaulting her in Sydney's south-west Macquarie Street in Liverpool on Sunday, the report said. He is self-proclaimed fortune teller working from an astrology centre in Liverpool. With the assistance of interpreters, investigators spoke with Muniyappa before executing a crime scene warrant, the report said. On Monday, investigators were alerted by the Australian Federal Police that Muniyappa was at Sydney International Airport and attempting to board a plane to Singapore. Former India hockey player Raghbir Bhola passes away
Former India hockey player Raghbir Singh Bhola, a two-time Olympic medallist, has passed away aged 92, his family said Tuesday. Bhola, who breathed his last on Monday, represented India in the 1956 Melbourne and 1960 Rome Olympics, winning a gold and silver medals respectively for the country. His dedication and passion for field hockey continued in various aspects throughout his life and he served in diverse roles such as member of the IHF selection committee, FIH international umpire, manager of the Indian hockey team, TV commentator and government observer at the Olympic Games. He successfully captained the Indian Air Force hockey and Services team from 1954-60 and won the Inter Services Hockey Championship three times and the National Hockey Championship on two occasions. In 2000, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award for his achievements in hockey. Bhola is survived by his wife Kamla Bhola, three daughters and three grandsons.
