WI vs IND 5th T20: Hard-hitting Yashasvi Jaiswal eyes future success

Hogging the limelight with his phenomenal run in Tests and now in T20I cricket, talented Indian youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal says this is just the start and he needs to makes sure he's "ready for tomorrow". Fresh from his exploits in IPL 2023, the 21-year-old left-hander made a smooth transition to Test cricket with a century on India debut and then followed it up with a half-century. Jaiswal then grabbed his opportunity in T20I cricket with an unbeaten 84 off 51 balls, his first fifty in second appearance in the shortest format. "It's just the start," Jaiswal told reporters after India's nine-wicket hammering of the West Indies here on Saturday. It kept the series alive at 2-2 to take it to the decider slated later on Sunday. "I want to keep doing and building on it. I'm happy today but I want to make sure that I'm ready for tomorrow also. "It (half-century) was really special, representing India is always a proud moment. Of course, there is a lot of thought and hard work behind it

WI vs IND 4th T20: Very happy with how Mukesh has progressed says Mhambrey

India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey says pacer Mukesh Kumar has shown potential to serve India in all three formats and his workload will be managed accordingly. The rookier pacer got to make his debut in all three formats on the tour of West Indies. Speaking ahead of the fourth T20I in Florida, Mhambrey expressed satisfaction with Mukesh's progress. "Very happy with the way he has progressed; the thought process, the discussion we had with him and his approach towards the game is fabulous. "You need someone like him to come here on a tour and play against tough opponents on a different wicket which is never easy. But the way he has gone about it and the character he has shown (makes us) extremely happy. "Going forward, since we know he is capable of playing all three formats, we need to be smart with his workload management. He has played a lot of domestic cricket and got quality skills out there," Mhambrey said on Friday. Compared to the slow wickets in the Caribbean, the bowlin

WI vs IND 4th T20 Preview: Openers in focus as India aim to level series

India will hope that batsmen will helm their march towards a series-levelling victory over the West Indies with another impact effort in the fourth T20 International here on Saturday. India might have stayed afloat with a win in the third T20I but Windies still lead the series 2-1, a quick reminder to the fact that the visitors still have concerns surrounding the batting unit. It was a comforting sight indeed to see Suryakumar Yadav flicking on his beast mode and Tilak Varma chipping in with crucial runs. But India's opening combination continued to falter. India had handed T20I debut to Yashasvi Jaiswal, resting Ishan Kishan. But for the third successive match, the pair at the totem pole position failed to impress, making just six runs. Jaiswal got out to pacer Obed McCoy in the first over itself. In the previous two matches, Kishan and Shubman Gill had managed to score just five and 16 for the first wicket to place some amount of pressure on the middle-order. Whether India will

WI vs IND T20Is: Hardik Pandya reveals why India playing 7 batters, not 8

India skipper Hardik Pandya on Tuesday made it clear that his team will continue to play with seven batters as he doesn't want to compromise on the bowling front. India's long tail was questioned after the loss in the first two games of the five-match series against West Indies. Speaking after India's seven-wicket win in the third T20, Hardik said seven batting options are enough in the playing eleven. "As a group we have decided to bat with seven batters and we have to take responsibility, like it happened today if the batters score runs then you don't need someone at number eight," said the skipper. Hardik also heaped praise on his deputy Suryakumar Yadav for his match-winning 83 off 44 balls. "As Surya mentioned, they (SKY and Tilak Varma) play together and spend time together, good to have someone like SKY in the team and when he takes responsibility it sends a message to the others," said Hardik. Tilak Varma, playing his debut series, remained unbeaten on 49 off 37 balls as

IND vs WI: Don't judge India on basis of just two losses - Mohammad Kaif

Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif asserted on Monday that the Indian team has the capability to win the World Cup at home this year and it should not be judged on the basis of two T20I losses in the West Indies. India, after winning the two-Test series and ODIs in the Caribbean, are trailing 0-2 in the five-match T20I series, leading to criticism over the side's preparations ahead of two major competitions -- the Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka and the ODI World Cup at home. However, Kaif said at a function here that the fears of India under-performing in the World Cup were unfounded, although he indicated that pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah will have to be fully fit for the hosts to end the title drought. "India has lost just two matches (T20Is against West Indies), so we do not need to get overly concerned. I am seeing a lot of negative reaction after the two losses. But I will only say that our team is extremely competitive. "I am not going to judge (India) on two back-to-back losse

WI vs IND 2nd T20: Pooran fined 15% of match fee for criticising umpire

West Indies' wicketkeeper batsman Nicholas Pooran, the hero of their two-wicket victory over India in the second T20 International, on Monday has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for publicly criticising the umpires during the match here. Pooran's was a Level 1 offence and he was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to "public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match". Pooran admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction of a reprimand that was proposed by match referee, Richie Richardson, and as such there was no need for a formal hearing. In addition to this, one demerit point has also been added to Pooran's disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period. The incident occurred following the review of a LBW decision in the fourth over of the India innings. Pooran criticised the umpires for having to use up a player review for a ..

WI vs IND 3rd T20 preview: Pooran big threat, batters must fire for India

India will need to bat with the fearlessness they often talk about as they look to avoid a series defeat in the third T20 International against the West Indies here on Tuesday. The slow pitches on offer have not been the best for batting but as skipper Hardik Pandya pointed out after the loss on Sunday, India should have a found way to score additional 10-20 runs. India, who last lost to the West Indies in a bilateral T20 series back in 2016, trail 0-2 in the five-match series. The shortest format demands the batters to go hard from ball one and that is something India's top-order, comprising Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav, have not been able to do. The top-order's failure has put extra pressure on the likes of Sanju Samson and rookie Tilak Varma, who has taken to international cricket like fish to water. With focus on ODIs in a World Cup year, Gill, Kishan and Suryakumar would want to be amongst runs ahead of the Asia Cup beginning August 31. "Batters need to ta

WI vs IND 2nd T20I: Tilak Varma calls skipper Rohit Sharma his inspiration

Rookie batter Tilak Varma feels the constant guidance from his mentor Rohit Sharma has played a big role in his stellar start to international cricket. Varma has been the stand out batter for India in the five-match T20 in the Caribbean. The visitors trail the series 0-2. "He (Rohit bhai) has been a support system and always told me to enjoy the game. He always guides me how to play," Varma said after scoring his maiden T20 fifty albeit in a losing cause. "My inspiration from childhood is (Suresh) Raina bhai and Rohit bhai. I spend most time with Rohit bhai. In first IPL he said 'Tilak is an all format player' and it boosted my confidence." Varma hit 51 off 41 balls to guide India to 152 for seven in second T20, a target which West Indies overwhelmed in 18.5 overs riding on Nicholas Pooran's 40-ball 67. "The wicket was slow and double paced. So first we though 150-160 would be a good score but I think we were 10 runs short. Credit goes to Pooran, he batted really well. We knew if

WI vs IND 2nd T20I: Chahal says team backs Kuldeep for his great bowling

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal understands why Kuldeep Yadav is playing ahead of him in the ODI format and is not losing sleep over his place in the Asia Cup and World Cup squad. Chahal did not make the playing eleven in the three ODIs against the West Indies. Featuring in his first game since the IPL, Chahal made his presence felt with a twin strike in his opening over but India lost the game by four runs. "Team combination is our priority and it is not something new. At 7 we generally play Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel. Three spinners can only play if the wickets are spin-friendly," said Chahal ahead of the second T20. "Kuldeep is bowling really well, he is in a great rhythm and that's why team is backing him. I keep working on nets so that whenever I get the chance I will grab it," the leg-spinner added. The focus is on ODIs ahead of the World Cup at home in October-November but Chahal has not been able to get a game since January. However, the 33-year-old is happy as long he get

WI vs IND 1st T20I: ICC fines India and West Indies for slow over-rate

India and West Indies have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first T20 International of the five-match series at Tarouba, Trinidad. While India were fined five per cent of their match fee for falling one over short of the minimum over-rate on Thursday night, West Indies have been docked 10 per cent of their match fee for falling two overs short of the minimum over-rate. Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Hardik Pandya and Rovman Powell's sides were ruled to be one and two overs short respectively of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, subject to a cap of 50 per cent of the match fee. IND vs WI 2023: After India debut, Tilak Varma hopes to win World Cup

Tilak Varma was not expecting to make his India debut so soon in his career, but having realised his dream, he is hoping to achieve his next target: win a World Cup. The 20-year-old Varma, who was part of the 2020 U-19 World Cup squad, scored a fearless 39 off 22 balls in his maiden outing with the senior India team during the opening T20I against the West Indies, which the visitors lost by four runs. "Everyone has this dream of playing for the country, I never thought that I will be able to play for India so soon in my career, because, after the Under-19 World Cup, there was the coronavirus issue which happened, so I thought let me just use the opportunity that I get," Varma said in a video posted by the BCCI. Varma, who plays for Mumbai Indians, amassed 343 runs at an average of 42.8 in 11 matches in the 2023 IPL season, besides scoring 397 runs in 14 matches in the 2022 edition.
