'Honour killing': Woman shot dead by relative in Pakistan

A woman health worker has been gunned down with an assault rifle by her sister's husband over "honour" in Pakistan's Punjab province, a media report said today. Bushra Parveen, 35, is survived by two children. The suspect, Khawar Imran, a vice-chairman of a local government body, had suspicion about the character of Parveen who lived in Chakrian village of Gujrat district, Dawn news reported. According to the police, Imran entered Parveen's house and opened fire at her with assault rifle Kalashnikov, killing her on the spot on Sunday. He managed to flee after committing the crime. A case of murder has been lodged against the suspect on the report of Mazhar Iqbal, the husband of the deceased woman. Police said that Parveen worked as a woman health worker.

Reuters reporters jailed for seven years in Myanmar 'state secrets' case

Two Reuters journalists accused of breaching Myanmar's state secrets law during their reporting of a massacre of Rohingya Muslims were jailed for seven years Monday, drawing outrage over the attack on media freedom and calls for their immediate release. Chinese billionaire Liu of JD.com arrested in Minneapolis

Chinese billionaire Liu Qiangdong, also known as Richard Liu, the founder of the Beijing-based e-commerce site JD.com, was arrested in Minneapolis on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct, jail records show. Liu, 45, was arrested late Friday night and released Saturday afternoon pending possible criminal charges, Hennepin County Jail records show. The jail records don't provide details of the alleged incident. Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said Sunday that he couldn't provide any details because the investigation is considered active. He declined to say where in Minneapolis Liu was arrested or what Liu was accused of doing. A woman was killed and eight people were injured in two separate building collapse incidents due to incessant rains here, police said Sunday. Superintendent of Police (City) Shlok Kumar said a roof of an under construction building came crashing down at around 12.30 pm on Sunday in Vikram enclave here, injuring two labourers, a woman and her 15-year-old daughter. They were rushed to GTB hospital in Delhi's Shahdara, where the woman, identified as Praveen, succumbed to injuries, he said. Her daughter, Nisha, and the labourers were discharged after treatment, Kumar said. In the second incident, a double-storeyed building collapsed in Ashok Vihar colony of the Loni area Saturday night, injuring Islam Khan, his wife Bundo, son Kasif, daughters Shireen and Chandi, Kumar said.

Three held for rape attempt on minor in Jharkhand

A Mukhia (village head) and two others have been arrested for allegedly making an abortive attempt to gang-rape a 12-year-old girl and assaulting her in the district, police said Sunday. The incident took place in Ranga village on Saturday under Sikaripara police station. "We have arrested the Mukhia of Siltala village and his two friends last night and produced before a local court today," Officer-in-Charge of Shikaripara police station, Inspector Manoj Kumar Thakur said. Nigerian arrested for drug peddling, 8 Africans held for illegally staying in India

A Nigerian national was arrested for allegedly peddling drugs, while eight people from Africa were arrested for staying illegally in India, the police said today. Acting on a tip off, the hideouts of the Africans was traced following which a police team raided a multi-storey building in Qutub Vihar in Goyala Dairy on Friday, said police. During the search, the wanted Nigerian national, Ugochukwv John (28), was apprehended from his flat in Qutub Vihar and 100 grams of heroin, worth Rs 20 lakh in the international market, was seized from his possession. Three nabbed with heroin, cannabis in Jammu

Three people were arrested with over 300 grams of narcotics allegedly being smuggled from Kashmir Sunday night here, police said. A police party intercepted a car at Bahu plaza area in the city and recovered 85 grams of heroin, 260 grams cannabis and Rs 52,000 in cash from it, they said. The occupants of the car were identified as Abdul Lateef, Manzoor Ahmed and Abdul Majeed of Baramulla and Kupwara districts of north Kashmir, police said. Four men accused of stealing cars arrested in Delhi

The Delhi Police said Sunday it has busted a gang of car thieves who used to steal high-end vehicles parked outside gyms and sell them in Mizoram. The Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the police said it has arrested Amit (27), Pramod Nagar (35), Kashif Raza (32) and Kansam Rajesh Singh (43) and recovered stolen vehicles from their possession, they said. Two others -- Saddam Hussain (32) and Sarik (47) are absconding, police said. After Pramod, who was arrested first, his younger brother Amit, allegedly the gang leader, went into hiding, police said, adding that he was traced through the internet dongle he was using to communicate through Whatsapp with his family and friends. Gang assaults youth, makes him lick spittle; one held

One person was arrested for allegedly assaulting a youth and making him lick spittle in Nalanda district, suspecting that he had stolen a mobile phone, police said Sunday. The arrest was made after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The arrested person was one of the seven named accused in the FIR lodged Saturday, Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar Porkia said. The video was shot on August 30 at Siranwan village under Vena police station, police sources said adding that some youths were seen in the video beating up the youth with cane on the charge of theft of a mobile phone. The accused men also asked the victim to touch their feet and lick their spittle failing which he would be thrown in a nearby water body, sources said. All the seven accused persons and the victim are residents of Purai village under Harnaut police station of the district.

Demonetised currency seized in TN, 4 held

Demonetised notes in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, with a total face value of Rs 99 lakh, were seized from a vehicle in the district Sunday and four people arrested in this connection, police said. During a vehicle check in Karuppayoorani near here, a police team intercepted a car and found the demonetised notes in it, they said adding four occupants of the car were arrested. Two held for swindling Rs 1.16 cr from ATMs

Two men, who allegedly swindled Rs 1.16 crore from city ATMs along with their third accomplice, have been arrested, police said Sunday. Those nabbed have been identified as Rajan Bharadwaj, native of Faridabad area in Haryana and Shankar Jha, native of Govindpuri area in Delhi, they said. Both of them, aged around 25 years, work for a privatefirm, which would refill cash in ATMs of government and private banks. They were tasked with refilling the cash in the ATMs, Station House Officer, Sector 24 police station, Pankaj Pant said. A 31-year-old man has been arrested on the charge of raping a tribal woman in Odisha's Balasore district, police said. In her complaint, the woman, aged around 30, alleged that the accused forcefully entered her house at Paikapara village in Oupada police station area of the district Thursday and raped her. Two teenage sisters raped in hotel in MP's Sehore district

Two minor sisters were allegedly raped in a hotel in Ashta area of Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district, a senior police official said Sunday. The siblings, 14 and 15 years of age respectively, have said that the accused had identified themselves as Sanjay and Raj, said additional superintendent of police Sameer Yadav. "The victims were waiting to catch a bus in Puravar village, some 42 kilometres from here, Saturday evening when the accused, in separate motorcycles, offered them a lift till Ashta," Yadav told PTI. However, the accused took them to a hotel where the victims were threatened and then raped after which the accused fled, Yadav said. He said that accused, who are yet to be arrested, have been charged with rape under sections of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Woman alleges 'forced to undergo nikah halala', raped by father-in-law; 5 booked

A woman has alleged she was forced to undergo 'nikah halala' and marry her father-in-law who raped her following which a case was registered against five people, including her husband, police said Sunday. Apart from her husband and father-in-law, the others booked include her husband's uncle and two 'unidentified' clerics, a senior police official said. Bareilly Zone Additional Director General of Police Prem Prakash said the woman, a resident of Moradabad district, got married to a resident of Turtipura under the Nakhasa police station on December 7, 2014. "The woman alleged that she was thrown out of her in-laws' house on December 25, 2015," he said. Following which on January 3, 2016, the woman registered a case against her in-laws for harassing her. However, on December 24, 2016, both the sides reached an agreement and she went back to her in-laws' house, Prakash said. MP: Three charred to death as car overturns and catches fire

Three persons were charred to death early Sunday when the car they were travelling in overturned and caught fire on the Indore-Bhopal highway in Sehore district, the police said. The incident occurred near Dodi police outpost, some 65 kms from here. A police official said the car skidded off the road and landed into a dry nullah roadside after the person at the wheel lost his control over the vehicle, and caught fire. The three occupants of the car, including a woman, were charred to death, said police emergency response vehicle officer Krishnakant Giri. The car was on its way to Bhopal. Three fire tenders rushed to the spot and put out the flames, he said. Dodi police station in-charge Loksingh Maravi said efforts are on to identify the deceased persons.
