The CBI has booked an official of the Narcotics Control Bureau, a middleman and the director of a pharmaceutical company in case of alleged bribery of Rs 12 lakh, officials said Tuesday. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had carried out searches at the premises of Three B Healthcare in Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh on May 31, 2016, during which six kilograms of codeine phosphate was recovered from an almirah of company's General Manager Rajender Singh Rajput, who was also present there, the CBI FIR alleged. Codeine phosphate is a chemical derived from opium and used in cough syrups. Fearing arrest of Rajput, director of the company Neeraj Bhatia allegedly used the services of one Vishwadeep Bansal, asking him to get the matter settled with NCB officials as it could damage his reputation. The newly created anti-corruption ombudsman, Lokpal, has launched a competition for its logo and motto, official said Tuesday. It has sought entries and is offering a cash prize of Rs 25,000, they said. Lokpal is a statutory body constituted under The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013 to enquire into allegations of corruption against certain categories of public servants/ functionaries. People can send in their entries up to June 13. The motto/slogan should be catchy and should not be more than four-five words, according to an official announcement seeking the entry. A seven-year-old boy died due to suffocation after getting locked inside a car in Dommeru village here, police said on Tuesday."The boy named Saibaba had gone out of his house to play on Monday. He somehow entered a car parked nearby and apparently got locked inside it," Sub Inspector of Kovvuru town Police Station, Vishnuvardhan said.He said, "As the car had a cover on it, nobody could spot the boy. After four hours of search, he was traced inside the car in an unconscious state. The family members immediately took the child to the government hospital in Kovvur where doctors declared him dead."The police officer said no case has yet been registered in connection with the incident.Saibaba, whose father died sometime back, used to stay with his mother Laxshmi in their maternal house, he added.

The owner of a brick kiln and six others were booked for allegedly raping and setting ablaze a minor Dalit labourer at the factory here, police said Tuesday. The 14-year-old girl, who worked at the brick kiln at a village in the district, was found dead on Saturday, following which her parents had registered a complaint in Kotwali police station , SHO Anil Kapervan said. He said seven people, including the owner of the factory, were booked for raping and setting her afire. The post-mortem report suggests that the girl died due to burn injuries and suffocation, the SHO said.

A 42-year-old man has been awarded death sentence by a local court for killing his disabled younger brother. The court of additional district and session judge, Jaipur metropolitan no. 14, awarded death penalty to Ram Prasad Sahu on Monday. Sahu, who had earlier served jail term in another case, was held guilty under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for brutally killing his younger brother, Moti, in front of a huge mob on February 23, 2017. "The judge observed that there is no chance of improvement in his conduct and he is a threat to the society," public prosecutor Alok Sharma said. The incident had occurred in Bhatta Basti area of the city. Sharma said that the man had placed his foot over the body and smoked a bidi next to it. Sahu has served 14-year imprisonment in another case earlier. Besides, six other cases are also pending against him.
The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to direct the Uttar Pradesh Police to conduct further probe in the 2018 Hapur lynching case. A vacation bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Aniruddha Bose said the trial court would decide the plea for seeking further direction to the state police to file supplementary charge sheet after conducting further probe in the murder case of 45-year-old meat exporter Qasim Qureishi. The bench was hearing a fresh interim application filed by Samiuddin, a relative of the deceased, in which it was submitted that further probe was needed in view of revelations made by two brothers of the meat exporter in their statements recorded under section 164 of the CrPC before the chief judicial magistrate of Hapur. Declining the plea, the bench asked Samiuddin to approach the trial court which will take a decision in accordance with the law. Prosecutors say 67-year-old Turab Lookman, of Los Alamos National Laboratory, had been asked on an employment questionnaire and by officials if he had been recruited by China's Thousand Talents Program or applied to work there. He's accused in an indictment filed last week of falsely stating that he hadn't. Federal prosecutors say the China program had been established to recruit people with access to and knowledge of foreign technology and intellectual property.
