Rajasthan: Five of family feared dead as motorcycle falls into canal

Five members of a family, including three children, were feared dead after the motorcycle they were riding fell into the Indira Gandhi Canal in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, police said Monday. The incident took place on Sunday when Parmu Ram (32) and his wife Banarasi (30) were returning home to Bhuna Wali Dhani village after visiting his parents in Bhairu Shri village, they said. The couple was accompanied by their two daughters and a son, aged between two to seven years, they added. The motorcycle has been recovered from the canal after a day-long search operation, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sukhpal Singh, posted at Rawatsar police station, said. He said the operation will continue on Tuesday to locate the bodies. The matter came to light after the family's relatives lodged a missing complaint when the five did not return home. A search was launched and it revealed that someone had seen them falling into the canal on Sunday, Singh said.

Two held with over 6 kg drugs in HP's Mandi district

Two men were arrested Monday after 6.32 kg charas was allegedly recovered from their car here, police said. During a checking at Galu area on Pathankot-Mandi Road, 6.324 kg of charas and 413 gram opium was seized from their vehicle, Mandi Superintendent of Police Gurdev Chand said. The accused identified as Tule Ram and Satish Singh of Kullu and Kangra districts respectively were arrested, the SP said. A case has been registered under various sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against the accused, he added.

3 held over killing of Amethi BJP worker

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of a BJP worker in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district two days ago, police said on Monday. Director General of Police (DGP) O P Singh said there was a local-level political rivalry between the deceased, Surendra Singh, 50, and the father of one of the accused. "We have arrested three persons. After the incident was reported, as many as seven people were taken into custody and they were thoroughly quizzed," Singh told reporters here. "Among the seven people, there were three who were linked with the incident." Amethi Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar said those arrested have been identified as Ramchandra, Dharmanath and Naseem, while two persons were absconding. Gangster wanted by Delhi and UP police arrested from Manipur

A 29-year-old gangster who was involved in more than 30 criminal cases in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and was wanted by the police of both the states was arrested from Manipur on Monday.The gangster, Rizwan, a resident of Delhi, was arrested from Imphal. He was involved in several cases including attempt to murder and armed robbery in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, police said.Rizwan was hiding for the past several months to evade arrest.The Uttar Pradesh police had declared a Rs 70,000 reward for those who had information about the gangster.Rizwan was wanted by the police in a case of armed robbery committed in Anand Vihar in 2015. The Delhi Police had declared a reward of Rs 50,000 on information leading to his arrest.The gangster was also on the police's radar in cases of attempt to murder in Budaun and dacoity in Sambhal and Bareilly, all located in Uttar Pradesh.Subsequently, the police had declared him a proclaimed offender.

2 head constables suspended, 3 SPOs sacked after video of woman being beaten by policemen goes viral

Two head constables of Haryana police were suspended and three Special Police Officers terminated from service after a video of a woman allegedly being beaten by members of Faridabad Police went viral on social media. An FIR, under various provisions of IPC pertaining to wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt and word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, has been lodged against the accused in Faridabad on Monday, a police spokesman said here. Commissioner of Police, Faridabad, Sanjay Kumar ordered suspension of Head Constables Baldev and Rohit and dismissal of three SPOs Krishan, Harpal and Dinesh, he added. Two held with leopard skin worth Rs 18 lakh

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly possessing hide of a leopard, worth Rs 18 lakh, here in Maharashtra, police said Monday. The duo, identified as Rajesh Arora (44) and Moses alias Moza Kapren Agimani (30), were held from near ESIC Hospital in Wagale Estate area last week, a senior crime branch officer said. While Arora is a resident of suburban Mulund Agimani hails from Dharwar in Karnataka. Police found the leopard skin kept in a gunny bag carried by the duo, he said. A case has been registered under various sections of Wildlife Act, 1972. Police are investigating the source from whom the duo received the big cat skin and its potential buyer, he added.

Saradha scam: Ex-Kolkata police chief fails to appear before CBI for questioning, seeks time

Former Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar Monday failed to appear before the CBI, which had summoned him for questioning in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam, and sought a week's time citing personal reasons. A CID official visited the CBI office in Salt Lake and submitted a letter by Kumar in which he said he is on a three-day leave and is therefore unable to attend the summon, officials said. Kumar sought seven days time, citing personal reasons, to appear before CBI officers in connection with the case. "We waited for Mr Kumar but he did not turn up. We have received a letter from the West Bengal CID regarding his absence," an official said. CBI sources said officials were at the Barasat court to pre-empt any attempt by Kumar to prevent the agency from interrogating him. Several calls to Kumar went unanswered. The Delhi High Court on Monday said that Aditya Talwar, son of lobbyist Deepak Talwar and accused in a money laundering case, ought to appear before authorities and satisfy them, after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed that he was a "fugitive". The ED made the claim before a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice Brijesh Sethi while opposing the plea by Wave Hospitality Ltd which has challenged a notice issued to it by the agency asking the company why the provisional attachment of its hotel in Aerocity area here should not be confirmed. The ED had in March provisionally attached the Holiday Inn, worth over Rs 120 crore, in connection with a money laundering case against Talwars. Driver held for killing his colleague for Rs 15 lakh

A shipping company driver wanted in connection with the killing of his 72-year-old colleague on May 13 has been arrested and stolen amount of Rs 14 lakh recovered from him, police said Monday. The accused Rahul Yadav, 28, had allegedly strangulated Raghuram Aital in his car and dumped his body along the roadside on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Palghar district of Maharashtra. Waliv police station Assistant Police Inspector Sudhir Daherkar said Yadav allegedly strangulated Aital with a leather belt and fled with Rs 15 lakh cash he was carrying. "The money was given to Aital for delivering it to a person based out of Borivli," he said, adding that the incident occurred when Aital was going to Borivli in the car driven by Yadav. Man kills in-laws in UP's Kushinagar

A 28-year-old man was arrested Monday for allegedly killing his in-laws in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar district, police said. Mantu Gupta killed his father-in-law Chhangur Gupta (60) and mother-in-law Kismati Gupta (55) during their sleep with a sharp-edged weapon in Khangi Bazaar area under Barwapatti police station on Sunday night, Superintendent of Police Rajeev Narayan Mishra said. The couple's grandson couple Aditya, 14, suffered injuries in the incident, Mishra said, adding the boy was presently receiving treatment at a hospital. SC grants protection from arrest to WB BJP leader in criminal case

The Supreme Court Monday restrained the West Bengal Police from taking any coercive action for seven days against a state BJP leader in a criminal case. A vacation bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose, however, refused to entertain the petition of West Bengal BJP treasurer Sawar Dhananiya against the registration of the criminal case and asked him to approach the local court with his plea. The bench took note of the submission of senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for Dhananiya, that a case has been lodged against him due to political vendetta and, moreover, he was constrained to approach the apex court as the lawyers in the state were on strike. HC agrees to hear on Tuesday plea to enhance 20-week period for termination of pregnancy

The Delhi High Court agreed to hear on Tuesday a plea for enhancing to 24 or 26 weeks the time limit to terminate a pregnancy in case of any health risk to the mother or the foetus, from the current 20-week cap. The petition, which sought that unmarried females and widows too should be allowed to undergo legal abortion under the law, was mentioned before a bench bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice Brijesh Sethi on Monday which listed it for hearing tomorrow. Pakistan and the UK have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to start the process for the extradition of former finance minister Ishaq Dar, who has been declared an absconder in a graft case linking to the Panama Papers scandal. The MoU - signed this week and case specific to 68-year-old Dar - provides legal basis in the absence of an extradition treaty, Geo TV reported.
