SC dismisses plea challenging HC verdict on power to arrest in GST evasion cases

The Supreme Court Monday dismissed a plea challenging the Telangana High Court verdict that a person can be arrested by the concerned authority in cases of Goods and Service Tax (GST) evasion. The plea came up for hearing before a vacation bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose and the apex court said it was not inclined to interfere with the April 18 judgement of the high court. "Having heard counsel for the petitioner and upon perusing the relevant material, we are not inclined to interfere. The special leave petition is accordingly dismissed," the bench said. On April 18, the high court had said it was not inclined to grant relief against arrest to the petitioners who had approached it challenging the summons issued by Superintendent (Anti-Evasion) of the Hyderabad GST Commissionerate under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 and invocation of penal provisions under the law. SC refuses protection from arrest to BSP MP Atul Rai

In a setback to newly elected BSP MP Atul Rai, the Supreme Court Monday refused to grant him protection from arrest in a rape case while noting that 16 other criminal cases were pending against him. A vacation bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose said it was not inclined to entertain the petition of Rai, who has won Lok Sabha election from Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of more than one lakh votes. At the outset, the bench asked the counsel for Rai about the number of criminal cases were pending against him. The counsel replied that the MP had 16 criminal cases pending against him and he was out on bail in all the cases except the rape case. The counsel also said that Rai had sought that the FIR against him in the rape case be quashed. "Sorry, we are not inclined to entertain this petition. Dismiss," the bench said. NGT seeks action taken report on brick kilns running in UP

The National Green Tribunal has sought action taken reports on brick kilns running in Meerut, Shamli and Muzaffarnagar districts in Uttar Pradesh, noting that illegal units were adding to the air pollution. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board and the district magistrates of three districts to furnish factual and action taken reports in the matter within a month via email. The tribunal said if any brick kiln is found to be operating illegally in the area, appropriate action may be taken in accordance with the law. Absconder arrested in J-K's Rajouri

An absconder, on the run for a year, was arrested from the Sunderbani area in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district Monday, police said. Zaffer Iqbal, the accused, a resident of Marchola village, was wanted in a case registered under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) in 2018, they said. Ex-Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar skips CBI summons

Former Kolkata Commissioner of Police Rajeev Kumar, who is accused of tampering with evidence in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, did not appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as instructed, CBI sources said on Monday.Last evening, the probe agency had summoned Kumar to appear before it at 10 am, in connection with an ongoing investigation into the scam. Man dies after jumping from the balcony of Bawana police station

A 58-year-old man died after he allegedly jumped from the balcony of the Bawana police station, where he was called for questioning regarding the whereabouts of his son, officials said Monday. The son of the deceased - Rahul is involved in two cases of attempted murder as well as another case of murder and has been declared an absconder by a city court. The deceased has been identified as Balraj, a resident of Bajitpur Thakran near Bawana, said officials. The police also denied allegations that the victim was beaten up at the police station. Pak SC makes history by hearing case via e-Court

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Monday made history by holding hearing in a case via e-Court - a system based on video-link connectivity. The Supreme Court said in a statement that it started hearing of cases through e-Court system. Maha: Man, pregnant wife killed in road accident

A man and his pregnant wife were killed when a truck hit their motorcycle in Maharashtra's Jalna district on Monday, police said. The couple was on way to a hospital when the speeding truck hit their two-wheeler at Gundewadi village, about 10 km from here, an official at Chandanzira police station said. While the man died on the spot, his wife, who received serious injuries, was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed during treatment, he said. NGT slaps Rs 10,000 penalty on UPPCB for "misleading" report

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board for its "misleading" report on inspection of two industrial units in Ghaziabad. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said the UPPCB report is not a responsible one as the team did not visit the actual location of the workshops. The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by city resident Arvind Mahipal, through advocate Siddhartha Singh, seeking action against the polluting activities of the Express Engineering and Spare Pvt Ltd, Surya Nagar, Ghaziabad. "For such misleading report, we impose cost of Rs 10,000 which may be deposited by the UPPCB with the CPCB within one month and recovered from the person responsible for giving misleading report. Appropriate action be also taken by the UPPCB against the conduct of such person, after identifying him," the bench said. Four new Delhi High Court judges take oath, total strength at 40

Four new Delhi High Court judges, including a woman judge, were sworn in on Monday, taking the working strength of the court to 40 -- still way short of the approved number. Justices Talwant Singh, Rajnish Bhatnagar, Asha Menon and Brijesh Sethi were administered the oath by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajendra Menon. The Delhi High Court has an approved strength of 60 and faces a shortage of 20 judges. Including Justice Menon, there are eight woman judges in the Delhi High Court. The four judges were appointed by President Ram Rath Kovind after their names were approved by the government. The new appointees were judicial officers in the Delhi district courts. The Delhi High Court on Monday sought Robert Vadra's response on the ED plea to cancel his anticipatory bail in a money laundering case on the ground that it required his custody as he was not cooperating in the investigation. Justice Chander Shekhar issued notice to Vadra on the Enforcement Directorate's petition challenging trial court's April 1 order which granted him anticipatory bail. Bihar: Father-son duo awarded life term for murdering woman

A local court Monday sentenced a man and his son to life imprisonment for killing a woman after branding her as a witch in Bihar's Begusarai district four years ago. 3 ISIS and LeJ terrorists arrested in Pakistan

Three terrorists belonging to the Islamic State (IS) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) militant groups have been arrested by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) officials in Pakistan's Punjab province. Jharkhand: Men's heads tonsured, women's nails trimmed for not following rituals

The Jharkhand Police has detained six people for allegedly forcibly tonsuring the heads of nine men and trimming the nails of seven women in Seraikela-Kharsawan district after they refused to perform the rituals themselves following the death of a fellow villager, police said on Monday. One of the victims, however, claimed that the accused did this as they alleged that they (victims) practise black magic. The accused were detained on Sunday after the police received information about the incident that took place in Chhota Krishnapur village on May 23. Four foreigners arrested with drug cache in Delhi

The NCB Monday claimed to have busted a narcotics syndicate operating in the national capital with the arrest of four foreigners, including two women, and recovering more than 7 kg of drugs from them. Officials of the central anti-narcotics agency said two separate operations were conducted over the weekend here.
