The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice to businessman Robert Vadra and his close aide Manoj Arora on a plea by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking cancellation of the trial court order granting them anticipatory bail in a money laundering case.A single bench of Justice Chander Shekhar sought the reply of Vadra and Arora on the plea and posted the matter for hearing to July 17.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and advocate DP Singh appeared before the court on behalf of the investigating agency."The respondent (Vadra) is likely to tamper with evidence and influence witnesses in the case. The special judge has failed to appreciate that the respondent is a highly influential person. The Delhi High Court on Monday sought Robert Vadra's response on an Enforcement Directorate plea seeking cancellation of his anticipatory bail in a money-laundering case. Justice Chander Shekhar issued notice to Vadra on ED's petition challenging trial court's April 1 order, which granted him anticipatory bail. The court also sought response of Vadra's close aide Manoj Arora on the agency's plea seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing ED in the court, said they required his custody as Vadra was not cooperating in the investigation and and the trial court had not discussed the gravity of the offence in its order. Vadra, brother-in-law of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, is facing allegations of money laundering in purchase of a London-based property at 12, Bryanston Square worth 1.9 million pounds (over Rs 17 crore). The case is being probed under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Six kg poppy straw has been seized from a passenger vehicle in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said on Monday. The contraband, packed in five polythene bags, was being smuggled from Kashmir through Mugal road, connecting the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region with south Kashmir Shopian district, the official said. However, no one was arrested in connection with the recovery on Sunday as the driver of the vehicle fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle on being signalled to stop for checking by a joint team of police and Army at village Poshana, the official said. He said the poppy straw was found concealed in one of the empty compartments of the vehicle, a new modus operandi employed to smuggle the contraband. The vehicle has been seized and a case under NDPS Act registered.

A four-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a private school's helper-cum-conductor in Dhuri town in Punjab's Sangrur district, triggering protests by residents against the school management and the local administration. The incident took place on Saturday when the 27-year-old accused lured the girl when her mother had come to the school to attend a parent-teacher meeting, police said Monday. He was playing in a park with the girl and later took her to a room and raped her, they said. After the parent-teacher meet, the girl's mother took her home unaware of the incident. The girl complained of pain in abdomen on Saturday evening and repeated it on Sunday, following which her parents took her to a hospital where doctors confirmed the child was sexually assaulted. Three Pakistani nationals have been arrested from Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport for carrying fake Indian currency with a face value of Rs 76.80 million, police said Monday. The Pakistani nationals -- Mohmad Akhtar, 49, Nadia Anwar, 39 and Nasiruddin, 67 --- were arrested from the airport on Saturday as they arrived in the country from Doha with the fake currency, they said. Three Nepalese nationals, who reached the airport to pick up the fake currency, were also arrested. The police have initiated further investigation into the matter.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant protection from arrest to newly elected BSP MP from Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Atul Rai, accused of raping a college student from Varanasi. A vacation bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose said it was not inclined to entertain a petition to grant relief from arrest to Rai. Previously, the apex court had refused to grant interim protection from arrest to Rai. An FIR was registered against him on May 1 on a complaint by a college student, alleging that he took her to his home on the pretext of introducing her to his wife but sexually assaulted her. Rai's lawyer has said there was no provision for anticipatory bail in Uttar Pradesh, and since the high court on May 8 had dismissed Rai's petition seeking protection, he feared his client could be arrested in the case.

A man on Sunday morning was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants near Kidwaipuri Park here.The deceased has been identified as Ravi Rai.Rai went out for a morning walk and as soon as he reached Jaikund Apartment, unidentified assailants started firing at him.
