2 mill workers die after inhaling toxic gas

Two workers died after apparently inhaling toxic gas when they entered a tank of a flour mill in northwest Delhi, police said on Wednesday. The fire department was alerted about a gas leakage in Keshav Puram area around 9.20 pm on Tuesday and six fire tenders rushed to the spot. Two persons were found unconscious and the rescue operation lasted for almost five hours, officials said. The duo were rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead. The deceased have been identified as Bebal Khan, 35, and Mobin Khan, 30, residents of Jaipur, the police said. The two workers had entered a tank used in the mill to clean it. Doctors attributed the cause of death is asphyxiation, a senior police officer said. The owner of the mill, Paras, and supervisor Anoop have been arrested. HC commutes death sentence in rape-murder case

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has commuted the death sentence of a man convicted for the rape and murder of his daughter to life imprisonment. A division bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and Anjuli Palo passed the order on Tuesday. A trial court in Bhopal had on December 22, 2018 sentenced the accused Afzal Khan to death for raping and murdering his 6-year-old daughter. When the case came up for confirmation of death sentence, the high court held that it did not fall in the "rarest of rare" category so as to warrant the capital punishment, government lawyer Som Mishra said. The division bench, instead, sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum jail term of 30 years without remission, and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him, Mishra said. CBI announces reward for two unsolved cases from Gujarat

The CBI has announced cash rewards of Rs 10 lakh each in two unsolved cases from Gujarat relating to a woman missing since 2014 and the death of another six years ago, officials said Wednesday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has announced the reward for providing any "actionable information" related to the 19-year-old missing woman, Jaladhi Trivedi, daughter of Hareshbhai K Trivedi, resident of Navapura, Ahmedabad, a CBI spokesperson said. "The woman is missing since October 4, 2014 and was last seen at the Kalupur Railway Station, Ahmedabad in the morning of October 8, 2014," he said. The same reward has also been announced in a separate case for providing actionable information about the accused of Rashmi Bhave, wife of Vivek Bhave, from Gandhinagar who was killed at her residence on February 22, 2013, he said. LS polls: 724 women candidates in fray for LS polls

The fate of 8,049 candidates, including 724 women, in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls will be decided on Thursday when the results are announced. The Congress had fielded the maximum of 54 women candidates. It was closely followed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had fielded 53 women. Among the other national parties, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) fielded 24 women candidates, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) 23, the CPI(M) 10, the CPI four, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) fielded one woman candidate. As many as 222 women contested the polls independently. A total of 8,049 candidates were in the fray in the parliamentary polls. Boy dies in hydraulic car ramp collapse

A boy was crushed to death Wednesday when the hydraulic ramp with a car parked on it fell on him in a residential society in suburban Kandivali, police said. The mishap occurred at 10.15 am at Veena Santoor Society in Mahavir Nagar when Nihal Vaswani, aged 5.6 years, was playing near the car parking ramp, an official said. Vasvani was rushed to nearby hospital, where he was declared dead before arrival, he said. Police have registered a case of accidental death, the official said, adding that they will register an FIR against persons concerned for criminal negligence.

NHRC notice to UP DGP over death of man after being 'thrashed' in police custody

The National Human Rights Commission Wednesday sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh police chief over reports that a man died allegedly after he was thrashed while in police custody in Kannauj. The panel has observed that the reports, if true, raise the serious issue of human rights violation. "The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that a man died on May 20 allegedly after he was thrashed in police custody in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh. Reportedly, a case against the three police personnel including the in-charge of the police post and two others has been registered," the NHRC said in a statement on Tuesday. Difficult to preserve bodies after autopsy: AAP govt to HC

The Health Department of the AAP government Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that autopsy cannot be done within 48 hours of receiving a body as it is difficult to preserve it thereafter for identification purpose. The stand taken by the department was indicated in minutes of a meeting held on April 10 by representatives of the Delhi Police, Home Department, municipal corporations and the forensic medicine division on orders of the high court to deal with the condition of mortuaries and handling of bodies. The minutes, which were shown to a bench of Justices G S Sistani and Jyoti Singh, indicates the decisions taken by the departments regarding the recommendations made by the court appointed amicus curiae -- advocate Saqib -- on improving mortuary conditions and handling of bodies. 48-yr-old man killed by son over property dispute in Shahdara

A 48-year-old man was killed over a property dispute by his son, who later chopped his body into pieces and kept them in polythene bags for two days in his house, in Shahdara's Frash Bazaar area, police said Wednesday. On Monday night, an argument broke out between Sandesh Aggarwal and his son Aman, following which the latter allegedly strangulated him to death and chopped the body into 25 pieces, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said. Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased's brother Rakesh on Tuesday night, police launched a search operation and found the chopped pieces from the house, the DCP said. 5 RSS workers get life term for murder of CPI-M activist, 11 acquitted

Five RSS workers were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court Wednesday in a case related to the murder of a CPI(M) activist here in 2006. Additional Sessions Judge R L Byju convicted Shankaran Master (48), his brother Manoharan (42), Vijesh (38), Prakashan (48) and Kavyesh (40) of murder, rioting and other offences under the Indian Penal Code. Awarding rigorous life imprisonment to the five accused, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on them. The court acquitted 11 other accused, including RSS worker Valsan Thillenkeri. According to the prosecution, a group of men fatally attacked CPIM activist K K Yakub with bombs on June 13, 2006, due to political rivalry. In all, 16 RSS-BJP activists had been arraigned as accused in the case.

Former IMF head Rato faces fresh corruption trial in Spain

Former International Monetary Fund chief Rodrigo Rato must face a fresh corruption trial, just months after he was jailed over a massive fraud scandal at bailed-out Bankia, the Spanish authorities said Wednesday. The Madrid high court said Rato, along with 12 others, will be tried on charges of corruption. Anti-corruption prosecutors are seeking a sentence of four years' jail plus a fine of 2.5 million euros (USD 2.8 million). Rato was jailed in October for four-and-a-half years for his role in a fraud scandal at failed lender Bankia, which he headed from 2010 to 2012. The authorities also charged Rato in November over his role in listing Bankia on the stockmarket in 2011, accusing him of falsifying Bankia's accounts so as to trick investors. SC to function with full strength after Centre elevates four judges to top court

The government on Wednesday approved the elevation of four judges to the Supreme Court, taking their total number to the sanctioned full strength of 31.Among the four judges is Justice B R Gavai of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, who will be the second dalit judge in the apex court after Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, who had demitted office a few years ago.The other judges, whose names have been cleared by the government are justices Surya Kant, Aniruddha Bose and A S Bopanna.With the government clearing the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium, the top court would now function with its full sanctioned strength of 31 judges.Justice Surya Kant is the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court while Justice Aniruddha Bose is the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.Justice Bopanna is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court.

Angry Chinese boss arrested for pushing Pakistani worker into furnace

A Chinese national was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly pushing a Pakistani worker into a burning furnace in Punjab province for failing to comprehend his instructions, triggering protests by co-workers, a media report said. NSE co-location scam: CBI informs HC it has broadened scope of investigation

The CBI informed the Delhi High Court Wednesday that it has broadened the scope of probe into the National Stock Exchange co-location scam and is looking into the aspect of criminality by public or private players in the misuse of NSE data. The CBI's submission came in a status report filed on the scope of the investigation in the case. NSE co-location facility allows stock brokers to take on rent specific racks and co-locate their servers and systems within the exchange premises. The scam relates to alleged market manipulation in connivance with some NSE officials. It was alleged that select stock brokers obtained market price information, ahead of the rest of the market, enabling them to make wrongful gains running into hundreds of crores. An employee of a shooting academy run by ace shooter Gagan Narang here has been arrested for allegedly molesting a 12-year-old girl during a training camp, city police said Wednesday. Fake Invoice racket busted by GST Commissionerate

A racket of procuring and supplying fake GST invoices by five firms without actual supply of goods has been busted with the arrest of three people, officials said Wednesday. The Medchal Central GST Commissionerate here also found that these firms allegedly availed ineligible Input Tax Credit (ITC) to the tune of Rs 22.64 crore. Based on information received from Kolkata and investigation, the Commissionerate registered cases against these firms which have been allegedly indulging in procuring and supplying fake GST invoices without actual supply of goods mentioned in the invoices. These firms were also allegedly passing on fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC) since July 2017, Principal Commissioner M Srinivas said in a release. Some of them were also using such fraudulent ITC to offset their GST liability on their manufactured goods, thereby evading the tax payable to the government. The value of the goods involved is Rs 131 crore and the ineligible ITC availed is Rs 22.64 .
