J-K govt employee arrested for duping people of crores of rupees in Poonch

The Jammu and Kashmir Police's crime branch Wednesday arrested a government employee for allegedly duping people of crores of rupees on the pretext of providing different household products at cheap rates in Poonch district, officials said. A complaint was lodged at the Mendhar police station by some persons, including Abdul Karim of Pathanteer, alleging Tariq Mehmood, Murtaza Ahmed, Imtiaz Ahmed and others duped crores of rupees from people of Mendhar tehsil and its surrounding areas, they said. After receiving the complaint, an FIR was 420 RPC (cheating) was registered at the Mendhar police station. The case was later transferred to crime branch, the officials said. The probe was taken up by the crime branch on May 22 and accordingly a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted headed by Bushan Kumar Ganjoo, Deputy Superintendent of Police Crime Branch, Jammu, who swung into action and arrested main suspect Tariq Mehmood, they said. Village sarpanch's husband shot dead while mediating in marriage dispute

A village sarpanch's husband was shot dead in broad daylight on Wednesday when he was mediating in a marriage dispute in Rajakheda of Rajasthan's Dholpur district, police said. Baby Sharma's husband Santosh Sharma (50), along with other villagers, had gone to mediate in a marriage dispute at Devendra Sharma's residence, Dholpur SP Ajay Singh said. During mediation, Devendra Sharma's son Raghvendra Sharma fired at Santosh Sharma, the police officer said. Santosh Sharma was rushed to government hospital, where he was declared brought dead by doctors, the SP said, adding four people, including Raghvendra Sharma, has been booked in connection with the incident.

Bandipora rape case: J-K state legal services authority releases Rs 1L to victim

The Jammu and Kashmir State Legal Services Authority Wednesday released Rs 1 lakh as an interim relief to the minor rape victim in north Kashmir's Bandipora district. The amount was released under J&K Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013, an official spokesperson said. "On the recommendations of chairman district legal services authority, Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) today released an amount of Rs 1 lakh as interim relief to the minor victim of Sumbal incident," he said.

Friendly 'doctor' who stole vehicles arrested in Greater Noida

A man claiming to be a homeopathic doctor was among two people arrested in Greater Noida on Wednesday on charges of lifting vehicles of people after befriending them, according to police. Accused Kapil Verma has been involved in at least three such cases where he has tricked people into lending their cars to him for some time and within days, the vehicles went missing, a senior police officer said. "He would get in touch with people and befriend them. Eventually he would ask for their vehicle for a day or for some time on some or the other pretext. He would then get a duplicate key made for the car and also get a GPS tracker installed in it," Superintendent of Police, Greater Noida, Vineet Jaiswal told reporters. SC forum leader alleges assault

The president of a local forum has claimed he was assaulted by a group of persons during a press conference held here to highlight alleged irregularities in social welfare residential schools in Telangana, police said Wednesday. National Scheduled Castes Reservation Parirakshana Samithi president Karne Srisailam in his police complaint said the group, including Osmania University scholar P Alexander barged into the conference room and attacked him. A video of the incident purportedly showed Srisailam being manhandled in the press conference room and later being chased and hit. Srisailam claimed he was attacked for holding the press conference to highlight the alleged irregularities in social welfare residential schools in the state. However, Alexander, who too lodged a counter complaint with the police, alleged Srisailam and his henchmen attacked him with stone, causing him bleeding injuries, police said. AgustaWestland case: ED files supplementary charge sheet against Sushen Gupta

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday filed a supplementary charge sheet before a special CBI court against Sushen Mohan Gupta, an alleged middleman in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam case.Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar will consider on Thursday the fifth supplementary charge sheet filed by the agency in the case.Gupta along with two other firms have been named as accused in the charge sheet. Criminal's supporters kill rival's brother inside hospital

In an ugly fallout of a gang rivalry, a 40-year-old man was allegedly lynched by supporters of a petty criminal at a civic-run hospital in Ramol area in Gujarat in a revenge killing, police said Wednesday. The brutal thrashing of Amir Shaikh in the civic-run LG Hospital on Tuesday night was captured by a visitor on his mobile phone. The clip shows Shaikh, who was bruised and smeared in blood, being thrashed brutally with broken pieces of furniture and other objects. A constable of Ramol police station was also injured in the incident. Farmer killed after objecting to picking of tomatoes

A farmer killed another farmer after being caught picking tomatoes from a farm in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh, police said Wednesday. The incident took place at Mehgawan village Tuesday night. The accused was subsequently arrested. Chakresh Patel (30), a farmer himself, allegedly attacked Rajendra Kachhi (45) with an axe after the latter objected to Patel plucking tomatoes from his farm without permission, said Panagar police station in-charge Ravindra Verma. Kachhi had gone to his fields Tuesday night after dinner to inspect the crops, he said. When he saw Patel plucking tomatoes, he informed his family members about it on mobile phone and asked Patel to go to the house with him. Engineer, assistant arrested for taking bribe in Ajmer

An engineer of the Public Health and Engineering Department and his assistant were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in Rajasthan's Ajmer district, officials said. The accused, Surendra Kumar, had demanded a bribe from the complainant, Mangalram Jat, through his assistant, Navratan Solanki, for issuing a no objection certificate about a contract work, said Chandra Prakash Sharma, assistant superintendent of police, Anti Corruption Bureau. Kumar and Solanki were arrested while accepting the bribe. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the officer added.

Six miscreants kidnap two men, burn their genitals; police on manhunt

Two men were admitted to hospital here after six people waylaid them, dragged them into their car and burnt their genitals with matchsticks before robbing them of the cash they carried. 2 killed as SUV hits motorcycle in Bareilly

Two persons were killed when their motorcycle was hit by an SUV having a Lok Sabha entry pass sticker, in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district on Wednesday morning, police said. The incident occurred on the Delhi-Lucknow highway at Lalpur crossing under Izzatngar police station area and the four-wheeler was part of a convoy heading towards the state capital, they said, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhinanadan Singh said. Cop, brother booked for abetting suicide of bitcoin trader

A Gujarat police officer and his brother were Wednesday booked for allegedly abetting suicide of a bitcoin trader here last week, police said. Narmada district deputy superintendent Chirag Patel and his brother Haresh Savani were booked under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 114 (abettor present when crime committed) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a Ranip police station official said. The trader, identified as Bharat Patel, had hanged himself from the ceiling at his residence in Ranip on May 18. He had left behind a suicide note blaming the police officer and his brother for "threatening" him for the losses incurred by them in the cryptocurrency investment, police had said. Pak court grants interm bail to Zardari

A Pakistani court has granted interim bail to former president Asif Ali Zardari in a case related to alleged award of illegal contracts, a media report said Wednesday. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) divisional bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhter Kiyani granted bail till June 13 to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-Chairman against Rs 200,000 surety bonds on Tuesday. HC reserves order on CBI plea to extend probe time in Asthana Bribery case

The CBI Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that it was asking for more time to complete the investigation in a bribery case involving the agency's former special director Rakesh Asthana so as to conduct the probe in a free, fair and transparent manner. Justice Mukta Gupta, after hearing the submissions of the counsel for CBI, Asthana and two others, reserved the order on the application by the CBI seeking extension of time to complete the probe in the case lodged against Asthana, DSP Devender Kumar and middleman Manoj Prasad. The wife of a shopkeeper, who was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district three days ago, and a constable are among the five people booked in connection with the case, police said on Wednesday. According to a police officer, a family dispute was the apparent reason behind the killing of Amit Kumar, 30, on Monday. Four men had come on a motorcycle to Kumar's pesticide shop on Majra road and fired at him, the police had said.
