HC seeks BMC's stand on no. of green experts in tree authority

The Bombay High Court Wednesday sought to know from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) if it was averse to appointing equal number of councillors/corporators and environmental experts to its tree authority. A vacation bench of Justices Sandeep Shinde and Sarang Kotwal was hearing applications filed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited, BMC and environmental activist Zoru Bhatena seeking various relief related to the tree authority. The high court in October last year restrained the tree authority from taking any decision on applications to cut trees until it had independent experts as nominated members. Last week, the BMC informed the court that the present tree authority has four experts. Bhatena took objection to this and said the tree authority had 15 councillors or corporators and just four experts. Man killed, constable injured in Muzaffarnagar encounter

The police claimed on Wednesday to have gunned down a person, allegedly involved in two dozen cases of dacoity and murder, in an encounter here. According to the police, the encounter took place in Kotwali area on Tuesday night. During the exchange of fire, the accused, Ashu, was shot and a constable suffered injuries. Ashu, wanted in several cases of dacoity and murder in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Baghpat districts, was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, the police said.

Minor girls from Jharkhand raped by four

Two teenage girls from Jharkhand were allegedly raped by four persons, including two minor boys, for the last six months in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district, police said Wednesday. An FIR was registered in the matter by a child welfare committee (CWC) in Bhopal on May 18 where the girls aged 15-16 years reached earlier this month after giving a slip to the accused. The incident was reported at Raila police station of Bhilwara on Tuesday, DSP Himmat Singh said. He said a case has been registered against a contractor, Montu, who had brought the girls from Daltanganj of Jharkhand and Chandra Kant and two minor boys under IPC Section 376D (gang rape) and relevant sections of POCSO Act. The accused are on the run, police said. Bhilwara child welfare committee chairperson Suman Trivedi said the contractor had paid Rs 4,000 each to the girls' families nearly two years ago, promising them job in Rajasthan. Delhi: Man chops father body, hides head inside coat cover

The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a youth for allegedly killing his father.The accused, identified as Aman, after killing his father Sandesh, chopped the corpse into more than 20 pieces. He then dumped the body parts in several packets.The police also arrested Aman's friend for being an accomplice in the crime."A call was received at around 2 am by Sandesh's brother that his brother is missing. On reaching the spot and questioning Aman, he said his father had gone out," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shahadra Meghna Yadav.On searching the residence, the police found numerous packets to which Aman responded that they have been kept for delivery as he owns a cafe. "As soon as the packets were open chopped pieces of the corpse was found. Rafale case: Petitioners file written submission in SC

Review petitioners Prashant Bhushan and others on Wednesday have filed their written submissions to the Supreme Court in the Rafale case.This comes over a week after the Supreme Court had reserved its verdict on petitions seeking review of the December 14 Rafale case judgment which refused to order a court-monitored probe into the deal for procuring 36 fighter jets from France.In the Rafale case, advocate Prashant Bhushan, one of the petitioners, argued that the December 14 judgment did not take note of the plea seeking an investigation in the matter and registration of a First Information Report (FIR).He claimed that there was no precedent of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) redacting pricing details from its report regarding the deal."Not even in one case in the past, pricing details have been redacted. 15-year-old girl raped in UP's Muzaffarnagar

A man was arrested for allegedly raping a teenager in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said Wednesday. The incident took place when the 15-year-old girl was alone at her home in Bamanheri village on Tuesday, SHO of the Kotwali police station Anil Kparavan said. According to a complaint lodged by the girl's mother, the accused, Mohit (20), entered the house while she was not present and raped her daughter, the SHO said. The girl narrated the incident to her mother who then lodged a police complaint, Kaparavan said. A case was registered against the accused and further investigation was underway, the officer added.

Chopper scam: ED files supplementary charge sheet against alleged middleman

The Enforcement Directorate Wednesday filed a supplementary charge sheet before a Delhi court against Sushen Mohan Gupta, an alleged defence agent arrested in the AgustaWestland VVIP choppers scam, in a money laundering case. The agency filed the supplementary charge sheet against Gupta before Special Judge Arvind Kumar. He was arrested by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. ED had said Gupta's role in the case came to light on the basis of disclosures made by Rajiv Saxena, who has turned approver in the case after he was deported from the UAE and arrested by the agency here. It is suspected that Gupta has in his possession payment details of the Rs 3,600-crore deal to purchase AgustaWestland VVIP choppers.

Delhi HC reserves order on CBI's plea seeking extension to complete Asthana probe

Delhi High Court on Wednesday reserved order on a plea filed by the CBI seeking more time to complete the probe in the FIR related to the investigative agency's former Special Director Rakesh Asthana and Deputy SP Devendra Kumar.The investigating agency had sought further six months time to conclude the probe.Earlier in March, Justice Gupta had adjourned the matter as the probe agency had failed to serve a notice to the defence counsels.During the hearing, the probe agency had submitted a status report of the investigation carried out by it in a sealed cover. Man stabbed by auto driver and his accomplices in southeast Delhi

A man was stabbed by an auto driver and two of his accomplices in southeast Delhi's Kalindi Kunj, police said Wednesday. The man identified as Abrar Alam, a resident of Chhalera village of Noida was stabbed after he resisted an attempt by the three people to rob him. The incident took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, police said. Alam boarded an auto at around 1 am from Shaheen Bagh. Two more passengers were already sitting in the auto. When the auto reached the Kalindi Kunj red light, its driver turned the auto towards Kalindi Kunj Ghat and stopped the vehicle at a secluded spot. President gives assent to a Gujarat legislation; chain snatchers to face upto 10 years imprisonment

President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to a Gujarat legislation under which chain snatchers in the state will face up to 10 years imprisonment instead of three years elsewhere in the country. The Criminal Law (Gujarat Amendment) Bill 2018 will provide a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 25,000 if anyone in Gujarat is convicted for the crime of chain snatching and causing injuries in the process. The President has given his assent to the bill recently, a home ministry official said. In rest of the country, chain snatchers are normally charged with the Section 379 of the IPC which is related to the crime of theft and invites a punishment of up to three years in jail or with fine, or with both. The Gujarat Assembly in September 2018 had amended Section 379 of the IPC by adding two clauses, IPC 379(A) and 379(B), thus incorporating the stringent punishment, the official said. The Gujarat government enacted the law as the punishment for theft under Section 379 .

Prayagraj: Kidnapper kills self after abducting child

A person, who had allegedly kidnapped six-year-old son of his former employer shot himself after police arrived to nab him. The man later succumbed to his injuries.The accused, Sanjay Yadav, had kidnapped the boy from his school's gymnastic hall in Prayagraj's Civil Lines area on Tuesday. He then called the minor's family and demanded Rs 3 crore as ransom, police said.The family registered a complaint with the police, following which a manhunt was initiated.During the operation, the police tracked the suspect in Bhadohi, who shot himself in panic on seeing the cops. The boy escaped unhurt and was rescued by the police.The accused was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries later.

The fate of 724 women candidates in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls will be decided on Thursday when the results are announced. A total of 7,928 candidates were in the fray in the parliamentary polls. The Congress had fielded the maximum of 54 women candidates. The opposition party was closely followed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had fielded 53 women candidates. The Supreme Court Wednesday granted protection from arrest till May 28 to Arjun Singh, the BJP candidate from Barrackpore constituency in West Bengal, in criminal cases lodged against him by the state police. ILFS crisis: ED conducts fresh raids in Mumbai

The Enforcement Directorate Wednesday carried out fresh searches in Mumbai in connection with its money laundering probe in the multi-crore IL&FS payment default crisis, officials said. They said the residences and offices of at least four directors of the firm are being raided. The central agency had first carried out searches in this case in February after it filed a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The searches are aimed at collecting additional evidences and documents, they said. The debt crisis at the infrastructure lender came to light following a series of defaults by its group companies beginning September, 2018. IL&FS has defaulted on payment of loans to SIDBI and along with its subsidiaries has a combined debt of over Rs 91,000 crore.
