Thane man gets 5 years jail for molesting minor girl

A man working as a gardener in a residential complex in Maharashtra's Thane district was convicted for molesting a minor in a lift and sentenced to five years imprisonment. Special POCSO Judge SP Gondhalekar, in a recent order, also fined Shilanand Jamdade (29), a resident of Kasarwadavali here, Rs 6,000, said Additional Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar. "On September 10, 2015, Jamdade molested the girl in a lift while she was going to a house on the twelfth floor of another building in the same complex where she stayed. On seeing her frightened, the family on the 12th floor called the victim's mother. The minor girl narrated her ordeal," Moholkar said. The complex's CCTV footage was checked and Jamdade, who worked as a gardener in the victim's residential complex, was arrested, she said.

US denies visit visa to 3 senior Pakistani officials: FM Qureshi

The US has denied visit visas to three senior Pakistani officials for not taking back Pakistani immigrants who are illegally residing in America, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said Tuesday. He said this while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Pakistani media reported. The ban was imposed for not taking back Pakistani immigrants who are illegally residing in US, The Nation quoted minister as saying. The three Pakistani officials were identified by Dawn newspaper as the Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, Interior and Director General, Passport. Opposition parties meet Governor over Ambedkar statue issue

Congress, BJP, TDP and other opposition parties in Telangana Tuesday met Governor ESL Narasimhan and raised the issue relating to a statue of B R Ambedkar allegedly being carried in a garbage truck here last month. All parties demanded that the statue be installed by the government at the same place from where it was removed, state Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy told reporters here. Though the government made some statements, it has not taken up any corrective measures, he alleged. The Governor and the state government should respond on the issue, BJP leader G Kishan Reddy said. HC directs UP govt to shut brothels operating in Meerut

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to immediately shut all brothels operating in Meerut. Hearing a PIL filed by advocate Sunil Chaudhari, a division bench of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery asked the Additional Chief Secretary to obtain a report on steps taken and also about objections by the district magistrate to the allegations made in the petition and place these on record. The petitioner alleged that several brothels are running in Meerut and the district administration is not taking any steps required under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act as well as under other relevant provisions. Ex-SC judge A K Sikri appointed chief of News Broadcasting Standards Authority

Former Supreme Court judge A K Sikri has been appointed as the chairperson of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority, the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) said Tuesday. The News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) is an independent body for self regulation of 24x7 news channels, who are members of the NBA. Justice (retd) Sikri will succeed Justice (retd) R V Raveendran, who completes his term on May 25. Justice Sikri will assume office on May 26. In a statement, NBA president Rajat Sharma said Justice Sikri's vast experience in the judiciary will definitely help news broadcasters. The NBSA, he said, is perceived as a self-regulatory body that implements the Code of Broadcasting Ethics in the news industry. It is an independent body completely free from any interference from the NBA, Sharma said.

Bihar: Man gets 10 years in jail for raping girl

A court in Bihar's Kishanganj district sentenced a man to 10 years in jail on Tuesday for raping a girl. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) Krishna Pratap Sinha held Jung Bahadur Rajbhar guilty and convicted him under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on him, failing which he would have to spend an additional six months in jail. Rajbhar raped a 13-year-old girl on June 5, 2018, at a place under the jurisdiction of Galgalia police station in the district. Rajbhar is currently lodged in the district jail.

Drug racket: Seven charge sheets filed, 12 cases registered

As many as seven charge sheets have been filed by the State Prohibition and Excise department which busted the sensational drug racket of supplying high-end narcotics in and around Hyderabad in 2017, officials said Tuesday. A total of 12 cases were registered since the racket involving supplying high-end drugs such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and methylenedioxy- methamphetamine (MDMA), was unearthed by the department's Special Investigation Team, which as part of its investigation had also probed the alleged drug-links with the Telugu film industry. "Seven chargesheets have been filed (pertaining to seven cases) till date and in the remaining five cases investigations are continuing," a senior excise department official told PTI. Asked about reports that none from the film industry, who were among the over 60 people examined, was chargesheeted, the official declined to comment. Delhi police nabs absconding Jaish terrorist from Srinagar; planning to escape to PoK

The Special Cell of Delhi Police has arrested an absconding Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist from Srinagar, who was planning to go to Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), officials said Tuesday. The 51-year-old, who was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh, has been identified as Abdul Mazeed Baba, a resident of Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir, they said. According to the police, Mazeed, along with his two associates, was convicted by the Delhi High Court in 2014 for delivering a consignment of arms, ammunition and explosives to Pakistan-based terrorist Shahid Gafoor in the national capital. The police said that Mazeed had been evading arrest since 2014 when a non-bailable warrant was issued against him. The Delhi Police sent a team to Jammu and Kashmir to nab him in the case. CBI Friday searched the house of the key accused in the sensational Pollachi sexual harassment case based on documents they received from the CB-CID, which was probing into the case earlier. The sleuths of the CBI are still continuing the search, police said. I-T dept files 11 charge sheets against aviation lobbyist Deepak Talwar

The Income Tax Department has filed as many as 11 charge sheets against corporate aviation lobbyist Deepak Talwar for alleged tax evasion by him and his companies, official sources said Tuesday. They said the prosecution complaints have been filed before a special court here last week under Section 276C(1) (prosecution for wilful attempt to evade tax) and Section 277 (false statement in verification) of the Income Tax Act. While six are fresh complaints, the rest are supplementary charge sheets to the main complaints filed in 2017 by the department against Talwar. These pertain to different assessment years, the sources said. 2 dead, 2 ill after taking homoeopathy medicine laced with

Two persons died while two others were taken ill after taking homoeopathy drug allegedly laced with some intoxicating substance in Bihar's Begusarai district on Tuesday, police said Sadar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Rajan Sinha said the deceased have been identified as Murari Ram (35) and Bahadur Shah (40), both residents of Kharidi village of the district.
