Man kills wife, her mother suspecting spouse's infidelity

Suspecting that his wife had an illicit relationship with another person, a 45- year-old man hacked his wife and mother-in-law to death in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, police said on Monday. Purna Chandra Mohanta, who killed his wife Mamata and mother-in-law Sunati Mohanta with an axe at Khuntapal village on Sunday night, was also injured after being assaulted by villagers. He was later arrested. Purna suspected that his wife had an illicit relationship with a villager and Purna had threatened to kill his wife and her mother. After the two women informed the police about the threat on Saturday, they were killed the next day. The three used to live in the same house, police said. Alleging that the police failed to provide protection to the two women despite being informed of the threat, villagers attacked the policemen when they came to the village and damaged their vehicle. Noida: Trader's aide carrying Rs 11 L to bank robbed in daylight

A city-based trader's aide was allegedly robbed of Rs 11 lakh on a busy road by motorcycle-borne assailants here Monday afternoon, officials said. The wholesale cigarette dealer's salesman was on the motorcycle carrying the cash in its dicky to a bank when he was targeted by the unidentified assailants at the Sector 21/25 roundabout, a senior police official said. The salesman of the wholesale dealer, who has a shop in Sector 22, was carrying the cash collected from sales to deposit it in a bank. He was at the Sector 21/25 roundabout when the assailants on two separate motorcycles came from different directions and overpowered him. They then took the money from the dicky of the motorcycle and fled," Superintendent of Police (Crime) Ashok Kumar said. A case has been registered against the unidentified men at the Sector 20 police station and investigation taken up, he said.

2013 Muzaffarnagar riots: Sessions court to hear Kawal murder case on July 1

A court here Monday sent a case in connection with the killing of a man in Kawal village of the district, which led to the 2013 riots in Uttar Pradesh, to the sessions court for hearing on July 1. Chief Judicial Magistrate Rakesh Kumar Gautem also directed the accused to appear before the sessions court on July 1. The case was filed on the basis of a complaint by father of deceased Shahnawaz against six accused. Six accused -- identified as Ravinder Singh, Prahlad, Bishan Singh, Tendu, Devender and Jitender -- allegedly killed Shahnawaz at Kawal village in Jansath area on August 27, 2013. Five of the six accused, barring Ravinder Singh who is absconding, were arrested earlier this month when the police reached their homes in Muzaffarnagar to execute a court order to attach their properties. Man killed, 5 wounded in party shooting; motive unknown

A shooting at a graduation party in Philadelphia has left a man dead and five other people wounded, authorities said. It's not yet known what sparked the shooting, which occurred around 10 pm Sunday. Police say about 60 people were attending the party in an isolated area at the end of a road when the shots rang out. Authorities say 24-year-old Isiaka Meite was shot in the back and died at a hospital. Three boys ranging in age from 15 to 17 and a 16-year-old girl were all shot in the legs or ankles and were listed in stable condition. A 21-year-old man was shot in his elbow and was also stable. The shooter remained at large Monday. Authorities had initially reported that seven people were wounded in the attack, one of several homicides amid a rash of gunfire around the city this past weekend.

Andhra Pradesh: Woman killed, one injured in attack by elephants

A woman was killed while another was critically injured when a herd of elephants created panic in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday.The herd of elephants entered farming fields in Eetamanuguda village, where it attacked a 62-year-old woman named Savara Gayyaramma. She was killed on the spot.The herd then moved on to Manda village, where it attacked a woman named Bodemma. She was severely injured and is currently admitted to RIMS Hospital in Srikakulam town.While doctors are providing treatment, Bodemma is in critical condition.

Auto-rickshaw driver assault case: 3 policemen suspended, cross-FIR registered

SI, constable arrested on charge of taking Rs 20k bribe

A Sub-Inspector of Police and a constable here were arrested Monday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 for not arresting a man in a case, the bureau said. The two attached to Bollaram police station had demanded and accepted Rs 20,000 from a woman for not arresting her husband in a case, an ACB release said here. They were arrested based on a complaint by the woman.

The justices' action Monday keeps the high-profile case off the court's election-year calendar and orders state judges to take a new look at the dispute between the lesbian couple and the owners of a now-closed bakery in the Portland area. The case involves bakers Melissa and Aaron Klein, who paid a $135,000 judgment to the couple for declining to create a cake for them in 2013. Gang rape victim commits suicide in UP over police inaction

A 24-year-old gang rape victim allegedly committed suicide in a village under Dataganj police station in the district blaming police for not registering her complaint, officials said Monday. SHO of Dataganj police station Amrit Lal has been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty, they said. SSP Ashok Kumar Tripathi said since the woman was reportedly raped in Secunderabad in Telangana, the case could not be lodged here. But the woman insisted that the case be lodged in Dataganj police station as she lived in that area and allegedly hanged herself, leaving behind a suicide note blaming the police for not entertaining her demand, he said. Tripathi said the woman was advised by the local police to file a complaint in Secunderabad as the crime was committed there. HC transfers to CBI court trial in killing of MSF activist in which CPI(M) leaders are accused

The Kerala High Court Monday transferred to a CBI court the trial in the 2012 killing of a Muslim Students Federation activist in which CPI(M) strongman P Jayarajan is among the accused. Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan passed the order, allowing a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking transfer of the case from the Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court to the designated CBI court here. The central agency moved the high court after the sessions court returned the supplementary charge sheet filed by the former, citing jurisdiction grounds. In its supplementary charge sheet filed in February this year, the CBI had slapped murder and conspiracy charges against Jayarajan in connection with the killing that took place in Kannur district in 2012. Politicians condemn alleged assault on tempo driver by policemen in Delhi

Leaders of various political parties on Monday condemned the thrashing of a Sikh Gramin Sewa tempo driver by policemen in Mukherjee Nagar here and demanded a fair probe into the incident. Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said there was no place for violence in the society, while demanding punishment for the guilty. "Violence has no place in any Civil Society. Mukherjee Nagar incident is sad and condemnable. Free and fair enquiry should be done, so that no innocent should be punished and guilty should be brought to book," he said in a tweet. Pak's top probe agency again fails to explain transactions in Musharraf's frozen accounts

A special anti-terrorism court in Pakistan, hearing the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, on Monday once again sought an explanation from the country's top investigation agency on the transactions in the frozen bank accounts of former military dictator Pervez Musharraf. The directives were issued to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) during the hearing of the murder case of former prime minister Bhutto, in which the former president, now based in Dubai, is among the accused. The FIA's prosecutor and investigation officer did not attend the hearing and the court expressed its displeasure over the agency's failure to present details of 75-year-old Musharraf's assets and transactions from his frozen bank accounts, The Express Tribune reported. Judge Asghar Khan adjourned the hearing till July 27 and ordered the FIA to present an explanation on how transactions were taking place from a frozen account. Man abducts, sells relative's boy for Rs 20,000; arrested

A man was arrested Monday for allegedly abducting and selling a five-year-old boy to a couple for Rs 20,000 in Uttar Pradesh's Shaharanpur district, police said. The boy, however, was rescued within an hour and Rs 19,000 cash recovered from the accused, they said. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dinesh Kumar P said, the accused, Praveen, is a relative of the boy. The boy's parents worked as labourers. The child's parents were out on work when Praveen along with his wife Renu came to their house in Saloni village of Sarsava area here and took Saurabh to nearby Sultanpur village, he said. Praveen then sold the boy to the couple. The couple had three girls, the officer said. As the child's parents reported the matter to the police, Praveen was questioned. He later confessed to the crime. The accused was taken to Sultanpur village where the police rescued the boy, but the couple who had bought the child managed to flee.

Revenue official caught red-handed for accepting bribe in J-K's Baramulla

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Monday caught a revenue official red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 12,000 in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, officials said. A written complaint was lodged in police station ACB and it was alleged that Naib Tehsildar Sopore, Fayaz Ahmad Wani, demanded the bribe for recording change of title ownership of land from one person to another in revenue records, an ACB spokesperson said. He said on the basis of the complaint a case was registered in the matter and investigation taken up. During the course of investigation, a team was constituted which laid a trap, the spokesperson said. Wani was caught red-handed in his office while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 12,000 from the complainant, he said, that adding investigation into the case is underway.

Man shoots shopkeeper dead, kills self in UP

A man shot a shopkeeper dead on Monday and later killed himself in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, police said. The incident took place this morning when Kishanlal (52), hailing from UP's Chhutmalpur, was at his shop here on Roorkee Road under Fatehpur police station limits, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dinesh Kumar P said. The accused, a 25-year-old man, came to the shop, bought a cold drink and drank it after mixing some substance, following which an argument started between the two, he said. During a heated exchange the man shot Kishanlal dead before killing himself, the SSP said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and an investigation is underway, the officer added.
