J-K Police bust inter-state gang of criminals, 5 held so far

The state police on Saturday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of criminals and have arrested five persons so far.Talking to media persons here, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Haseeb Mughal said that cars with the registration number of other states, light emitting diode (LED) TV and other electronic equipment were recovered from their possession."Police have so far arrested five persons out of which four are the main accused. The remaining one used to deal in selling and purchasing of stolen vehicles. The accused have confessed their crime during interrogation," said Mughal.Police had received a complaint of theft from an ITC store in Bagh Nand Singh area of the city. Minor girl drowns in river in Bundi

A 9-year-old girl drowned on Saturday while she was taking a bath in the Chambal river in Rajasthan's Bundi district, police said. The girl was identified as Komal Kumari, a resident of Hariom Nagar in Kota, they said. Kumari allegedly ventured into the deep end of the river while taking a bath along with her maternal grandmother on the banks of the Chambal in Keshoraipatan town of Bundi in the morning, Keshoraipatan Police Station Sub-Inspector Bhagwan Singh said. Unable to spot the girl, her maternal grandmother raised an alarm following which the people from surrounding areas rushed to the spot and initiated a search, he said. The girl was spotted after around 45 minutes and was rushed to a local hospital where she was declared brought dead, the SI said. She had come to her maternal grandmother's home in Keshoraipatan for summer vacation, he added. The body was handed over to the family members after postmortem. Telangana: Cannabis worth Rs 1.8 crore seized, two held

Two people were arrested and over 900 kg of cannabis worth around Rs 1.8 crore was seized from them in the outskirts of Hyderabad, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said in a statement on Saturday."The cargo lorry was intercepted by Hyderabad Zonal Unit. It was carrying around 944 kg of cannabis, packed in small packets and concealed under a load of tender coconuts. The value of the contraband is estimated at around Rs 1.88 crore," Additional Director General, DRI, said in a press note.The contraband was said to be brought from a village near Bhadrachalam and was being transported to Sangareddy."Two persons including the driver found involved in the illegal transport of cannabis have been apprehended," read the statement.The DRI officers had launched the operation after receiving intelligence that prohibited narcotic drugs were being illegally transported. The officers have also seized the cargo lorry used for transporting cannabis.

NAB submits reply on Sharif's bail plea

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) here on Saturday submitted its reply in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on the plea seeking suspension of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's sentence in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case.In its reply, the anti-corruption watchdog has opposed the suspension of Sharif's sentence and requested the court to reject his plea, Dunya News reported.Sharif cannot be released on bail as he is a convict and the accountability court had punished him after analysing the evidence, the NAB has stated.Last month, a two-judge IHC bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani issued a notice to the federal government, the NAB and the superintendent of the jail to submit their responses on the matter within two weeks.On March 26, the Supreme Court had granted a six-week bail to the former Prime Minister on medical grounds, which expired on May 7.Apart from seeking suspension of his sentence, the petition, filed by Sharif on May 20, also said ...

Kerala policewoman burnt alive

A 34-year-old woman police constable died after she was allegedly set ablaze by a man here Saturday, police said. The victim was posted at the Vallikkunnam station here. According to police, the accused allegedly poured petrol over the policewoman and set her ablaze this afternoon when she was on her way back home after work. She died on the spot while the man, who also suffered burn injuries, was taken into custody, a police official told PTI. He has been hospitalised. The reason for the attack is yet to be ascertained, they said.

History-sheeter killed in police encounter in Chennai

A 21-year-old man with an alleged criminal record was gunned down by the police here on Saturday after he attacked two police personnel with a machete, grievously injuring one of them, officials said. When constables Pounraj and Ramesh attempted to apprehend Vallarasu late last night in connection with a case, he hacked them with the machete, grievously injuring the former. Pounraj was rushed to a hospital and had to get 20 stitches, police said, adding that the other constable who sustained minimal injuries was also being treated. Later, another team of police personnel, led by police Inspector Miller, was deployed to nab the culprit and they spotted him after several hours early Saturday at Madhavaram. "When Miller and his team spotted Vallarasu, he attacked them with the machete despite being asked to drop the weapon," a police official told PTI. Man attacks family members and neighbours

Two persons were killed and three others injured when a man in an alleged inebriated condition attacked his family members and neighbours with an axe in Nalbari district, police said Saturday. According to a police, the accused identified as Pankaj Dev Nath attacked his elder brother Ajoy Dev Nath and his friend Chandan with an axe at his residence in Hati Namati village around 9 pm on Friday night killing them on the spot. Pankaj then attacked his 70-year old father Jagabandhu Dev Nath and his sister-in-law Chanjala Dev Nath. While attempting to flee Pankaj attacked his neighbour Painur Ali, they said. The injured have been admitted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, the police said. The villagers caught hold of Pankaj early this morning and handed him over to Nalbari Police station. As per preliminary investigation the crime was committed due to family related issues, a police officer said.

Punjab: Six accused of thrashing a woman sent to police remand

Six people accused of thrashing a woman over a money dispute were sent to two days police remand by a local court on Saturday.The state police presented the six accused, including the brother of a local Congress leader, in the court following their arrest.Earlier, Muktsar Municipal Corporation councillor Rakesh Chaudhary's brother and his aides dragged the woman out of her house on Buda Gujjar road in the city and had beaten her up with belts and sticks.The incident came into fore after a video of the incident went viral on social media. A woman was allegedly dragged out of her home, lashed with a belt, punched and kicked by a group of men, including the brother of a Congress leader, in Punjab's Muktsar district over a loan, police said Saturday. Robbery bid: Police find 3 motorbikes abandoned near Nashik

A day after a gang of robbers shot dead an employee of a gold finance firm in the city during a failed robbery bid, police have found three motorcycles abandoned near here, which they believe were used in the crime. Police have formed ten teams to trace the unidentified accused, an official said on Saturday. "Three motorcycles were found abandoned near Ramshej fort at Ashewadi, around 10 kms from Nashik, this morning. The vehicles are suspected to have been used by the robbers," an official of Ambad police station said. Sajju Samuel (32), who hails from Kerala, was shot dead by the gang of five robbers in the office of Muthoot Finance in Untwadi locality of the city around 11.30 am on Friday. Malegaon case: Pragya Thakur gets exemption from appearance on Saturday

BJP Lok Sabha MP and Malegaon blast case accused Pragya Singh Thakur was Saturday exempted from appearance at a special court in connection with the matter. Her lawyers sought an exemption from appearance from a Mumbai court as the regular Special Judge V S Padalkar, presiding over the case, was absent on Saturday, special public prosecutor Avinash Rasal said. Land owners booked for procuring fake ZP permissions in Thane

Over 75 land owners and site developers have been booked in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly obtaining zilla parishad permissions fraudulently, police said Saturday. The plots in question are situated in 27 villages which are part of the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation since May, 2015, an official said. "These villages were earlier under the Thane Zilla Parishad which was supposed to give permissions for construction purposes. It is alleged that between January 5 and August 9 in 2006, the accused used forged documents to get ZP nod to carry out construction and regularise illegal additions to buildings and plots," he said. A case was registered Friday against the accused for cheating and forgery under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code at Manpada police station in Kalyan, he added. "No arrests have been made so far. A probe is underway," he said.

A truck driver was arrested and 560 kg of poppy was recovered from him in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, officials said Saturday. Odisha: A minor girl found dead with her lover

A minor girl was found dead with her lover under mysterious circumstances and the suspected murderers were on the run.The incident took place in Dudkathenga village in Kalahandi, Odisha.Police have registered a case of murder in this regard under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.The man has been identified as Niranjan Lahajal. The body of the minor girl was thrown in the paddy field and Niranjan's body was found hanging from a tree. The bodies have been sent for post mortem. 3 killed as car hits stationary truck in Rajasthan

Three people were killed and another injured on Saturday when their car collided with a stationary truck in Jaipur rural area, police said. The incident occurred on Dausa-Manoharpur highway. The car coming from Dausa rammed into the truck parked outside an eatery, they said. The deceased have been identified as Tarachand Jain (60), his brother Rameshchand Jain (55) and Sunil Jain (45), all residents of Sikar district. 60-year-old woman killed by elephant

A 60-year-old woman was killed by an elephant near Chadivayal on the outskirts in the early hours of Saturday, police said. The woman, a resident of Pottapathi village, had come out of her house to answer the call of nature around 2.30 AM when the elephant attacked her. Hearing her screams, locals started shouting and managed to scare away the pachyderm, they said. Police said she died en route to hospital.
