Radio journalist shot dead in Mexico's latest media killing

A Mexican radio journalist was shot dead Saturday in a restaurant in Tabasco state, east of the capital, the latest victim in what has become one of the world's deadliest countries for the press. Jesus Ramos Rodriguez was killed in the town of Emiliano Zapata, an official from the local prosecutor's office told AFP. According to local media, Ramos had hosted a news bulletin for the 99.9 FM radio station for more than two decades. The El Universal daily quoted witnesses as saying his assailant got out of a car and headed straight towards him, shooting him more than eight times at point blank range. The killing comes weeks after a community radio station director was murdered in the northern state of Baja California Sur, in the first such case of 2019. Woman acquitted of blasphemy still can't leave Pakistan

A Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy after spending eight years on death row in Pakistan has been transferred from a secret location near the capital to another in Karachi, but is still unable to leave the country to join her daughters in Canada, a friend said Saturday. Aman Ullah, who spoke to Aasia Bibi by telephone Friday, said the 54-year-old Bibi is being held in a room in the southern port city. He said Bibi, who faces death threats by radical Islamists, is frustrated and frightened, uncertain of when she will be able to leave Pakistan. 10-year-old girl raped by sweeper inside civic body-run school in Delhi

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a sweeper inside a civic body-run school in Shahdara district of Delhi, following which the accused was arrested on Saturday, police said. According to the victim's complaint, she was leaving the school on February 5 when the accused asked her to sit at a place. He then moved her to another seat, then forced her to a wall and raped her, a senior police officer said. The accused then threatened the girl of dire consequences if she reported the matter to anyone, the officer said. However, the victim later narrated the incident to her relatives following which they approached the police on Saturday and filed a complaint, he said. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said. Boy on way to school killed by van in Delhi

A 11-year-old boy on his way to school was killed after being hit allegedly by a speeding school van in west Delhi's Janakpuri area, police said Saturday. The incident took place at around 7.45 am on Friday. The victim studied in a civic body-run primary school, they added. The boy was on his way to school when he was hit by the speeding school van near Pankha Road. The driver fled with the van from the spot, a senior police officer said. A case was registered and an investigation was taken up, he said. With the help of CCTV footage, the vehicle number was identified and the accused driver was arrested on Saturday, the officer said. The offending vehicle has also been seized, he said. The accused driver was identified as Anmol Dubey, (29), a resident of Rajapuri in the Dabri area, the police said.

Man dies under mysterious circumstances in Mangolpuri, family alleging police brutality

A 45-year-old food vendor died under mysterious circumstances in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri area with his family alleging that he was thrashed by cops, a charge denied by the police, officials said Saturday. To ensure a fair probe, a magisterial enquiry has been initiated into the matter, Seju Kuruvilla, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer), said. Local AAP MLA and deputy speaker in Delhi Assemblly Rakhi Bidlan reached the police station and sought a fair and speedy investigation into the matter, they said. Man shot dead in Delhi, police feel personal enmity may be the cause

A 23-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by unidentified people in outer Delhi's Bawana on Saturday morning, police said. The deceased has been identified as Karan Dabas, a resident of Sultanpur Dabas, they said. The victim was supervising the work of a few labourers in his agricultural field when some men arrived in an SUV and shot at him at least five times, a senior police officer said. The labourers informed the victim's family who then rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead, he said. A case was registered and an investigation was taken up, the officer said, adding personal enmity may be behind the incident. The body is at Sanjay Gandhi hospital for post-mortem and further investigation is underway, police said.

14-yr-old boy stabbed to death by three juveniles over friendship with girl

A 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death allegedly by three juveniles in central Delhi over his friendship with the girlfriend of one of the accused, police said Saturday. The three accused have been apprehended, they said. When the boy was standing near his house on Friday night, four boys called him to discuss some matter. However, the discussion led to a quarrel following which they allegedly stabbed him multiple times, a police official said. As the victim screamed for help, the accused fled from the spot. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by his mother where he succumbed to his injuries, a senior police officer said. Nawaz Sharif's name to stay on no-fly list

Pakistan has rejected former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's request to remove his name from the no-fly list, also known as the Exit Control List (ECL) on Saturday.Nawaz, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar had all requested for their names to be removed from the ECL in October last year - a request which was rejected by Pakistan's Ministry of Interior on February 9.The trio had claimed that Rule 2 of Exit From Pakistan Rules 2010 did not apply to them, as they were not involved in corruption, misuse of authority et al, reports Geo news.The three had been convicted by an accountability court in Islamabad in July last year, which sentenced Nawaz to 11 years, Maryam to eight years and Safdar to a year in prison each. Man arrested for killing wife on suspicion of her having extramarital affair

A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly strangulating his wife to death after he suspected her of talking to other men, police said Saturday. The accused has been identified as Sanjay Kumar, a native of Etah district in Uttar Pradesh, they said. In January, police received information regarding a partially decomposed body of a woman aged around 40 years lying in the forest area in Lajpat Nagar. Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar has been again called for questioning Sunday, officials said here. Kumar was questioned Saturday for nearly eight hours in Shillong as directed by the Supreme Court, they said. The agency may confront him with former Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh who has also been called tomorrow but a final call will be taken by the investigation officer who is present in Shillong, they said The CBI is relying on a 91-page letter from Ghosh, who was expelled by TMC, to the Enforcement Directorate, detailing the role of Kumar in handling the ponzi scam probe after the main accused Sudipta Sen and Debjani Mukherjee, both promoters of Saradha group of companies, had fled to Kashmir, officials said in Kolkata. Sen and Mukherjee were arrested in 2013 from Kashmir. Man arrested in 6-yr-old murder case

A 26-year-old proclaimed offender has been arrested six years after allegedly murdering a criminal associate, police said Saturday. The accused, identified as Rajukumar Mehto, is a native of Sitamarhi in Bihar, they added. He was arrested from Sonvarsha Indo-Nepal border. In July 2013, a mutilated body of a 35-year-old man identified as Anil Gupta was found in West Delhi. After investigation, two accused persons Pappu Mishra and Pintu Mahto were apprehended, who revealed that Anil was part of their gang and was involved in various robberies in Delhi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special cell) Pramod Kushwah said. Anil had an altercation with Mehto the and other gang members over sharing the booty, he said. "Police received information on Mehto about him shifting to Nepal. Subsequently, a trap was laid and he was arrested," the DCP added. Mehto had a Rs 50,000-reward on his head at the time of arrest.

Maha man kills wife, sleeps beside corpse before surrendering

A man allegedly killed his pregnant wife and slept beside the corpse through the night before alerting police in the morning in Maharashtra's Osmanabad district, an official said Saturday. Omerga tehsil resident Vinod Dhansing Pawar had an argument with his wife Priyanka Rathod on Thursday night and strangled her, a Murum police station official said. "He then slept beside the body and came to the police station on Friday morning to confess to his crime and surrender," the official informed. He said Pawar was a borewell commission agent while Rathod was a nurse at Tuljapur, adding that the couple had married nine months ago and the deceased was five-month pregnant. The woman's kin have told police that the accused used to demand money from her parents and this led to frequent quarrels, the official said. A case of murder has been registered and further probe was underway, he added.

The CBI will continue the questioning of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for the second day on Sunday and former TMC MP Kunal Ghosh will appear in person at the investigating agency's office here for interrogation in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam, officials said Saturday. Three senior CBI officers questioned Kumar for nearly nine hours on Saturday about his alleged role in the tampering of crucial evidence in the scam, the officials said. There was no briefing by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the questioning which began at around 11 am at its highly secured office at Oakland here as per the directions of the Supreme Court. The Madras High Court has stayed a tender notification of the Indian Ports Association for selection of law firms for legislative drafting of the proposed revamp of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 and its rules. A division bench, comprising Justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam, granted the interim stay while admitting a plea by master mariner, captain R Venkataramanan, who challenged the criteria fixed by the association. The association comes under the administrative control of the ministry of shipping. Venkataramanan alleged that the association, by issuing such a tender notification, was attempting to overreach their powers by taking up the role of the legislature. 2 held for killing e-rickshaw driver

Two men have been arrested for allegedly robbing and killing a 16-year-old e-rickshaw driver, police said Saturday. The accused were identified as Aftab (19) and Prakash (18), they added. On Wednesday afternoon, police were alerted about a body found at Uttam Nagar area. There were serious injury marks on the head of the deceased and blood stained stones near the body, police said.
