Punjab: Two persons including a woman arrested with 1.60 kgs of heroin

A man and a woman were arrested by Punjab police from two different locations in Jalandhar and recovered 1.60 kilograms of heroin from their possession.Both accused were arrested on Monday.The police have also seized Rs 8,39,250 cash from them.A case has been registered in this regard and further investigation in the matter is underway.

8-yr-old girl raped in Bhopal: Shivraj Singh Chouhan demands termination of suspended police personnel

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan demanded termination of suspended police personnel who were probing the alleged rape of an eight-year-old girl, asserting that they showed negligence while carrying out the investigation.Speaking to reporters on Monday, BJP leader Chouhan said the suspension of police personnel in the case is not enough as a criminal case should also be filed against them."Suspension of police personnel who show insensitivity in such cases and waste time is not sufficient. Ringleader of tech support scam gets 5 years in prison

The ringleader of a group of Indian college students doing hospitality industry internships in the US who cheated more than 20 people out of nearly USD 1 million in a tech support telemarketing fraud scheme has been sentenced to five years in prison. Federal authorities say 21-year-old Bishwajeet Kumar Jha was also sentenced Monday in Rhode Island to pay restitution in an amount to be determined. The victims believed they had purchased technology support. They were told that money had been erroneously refunded to their bank accounts by the tech support company and were asked to return the erroneous refund to Jha and others. The money generated by the Newport-based scheme was transferred to a California bank and from there to India, China, and Singapore. One victim lost more than USD 174,000.

BJP claims its party worker killed in Howrah for chanting 'Jai Shri Ram'

The BJP claimed on Monday that a supporter of the party was strangulated to death allegedly for chanting "Jai Shri Ram" by workers of the Trinamool Congress in the state's Howrah district. Though police confirmed the death of 43-year-old Samatul Doloi, whose body was found in a field at Sarpota village under Amta Police Station limits, officers were tight-lipped about the cause of the death. He had gone to attend a function on Sunday night but did not return home. His body with a noose around the neck was found on Monday morning, locals sources said. BJP's Howrah rural president Anupam Mullick claimed that Doloi was a party supporter and was killed by Trinamool Congress workers for chanting "Jai Shri Ram". 12 gold bars seized from bus passenger

Twelve gold bars, worth over Rs 70 lakh, have been seized from the passenger of a bus coming from Manipur at a remote village in Meghalaya's West Jaintia Hills district, police said Monday. Acting on tip off, the police stopped the Guwahati- bound bus at Phramer village and the gold bars were seized from a passenger on Sunday night. Each of the seized gold bars weighed around 166 grams. The passenger was arrested.

3 drug peddlers arrested, over 100 kg ganja seized in Ghaziabad

The Ghaziabad police have arrested three suspected drug peddlers and seized over 100 kg ganja in the past seven days, a senior officer said on Monday. The Masuri town police nabbed a drug peddler around 10.30 pm on Sunday and seized 103.5 kg ganja from him, the police officer said. The accused was identified as Meherban Qureshi (27), a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, the Kotwali police arrested two drug peddlers and seized a packet containing 1.5 kg ganja from them. The duo have been identified as Rama and Shyama. The trio have been sent to jail, the police officer said.

Four held for robbing couple in east Delhi: Police

Four men were arrested on Monday for allegedly robbing a couple in east Delhi, police said. The accused have been identified as Shahnawaj (26), Shabab (28), Mohsin (22) and Firoz(19), all residents of east Delhi. Shahnawaj and Shabab were previously arrested in a robbery case, they said. "Sonu Kumar (27), a resident of Vijay Vihar, lodged a complaint on Monday where he alleged that on Friday at around 8.30 pm, he along with his wife, took an auto-rickshaw from Anand Vihar ISBT to Kondli," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Jasmeet Singh. Three persons were already present in the auto-rickshaw when they boarded it, the officer said. After a certain distance, those present in the auto robbed the couple of Rs 5,000, some documents and jewelleries at the point of a knife and then pushed them out of the vehicle, he said. The complainant, along with his relative, reached Patparganj Industrial Area Police Station on Monday around 1.30 pm to file the case. Later, they saw the accused .

Ten workers of the ruling YSR Congress and Telugu Desam Party were injured in a post-poll clash at a village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.The injured were admitted to a hospital here."Situation in B Kothuru village is tense after the Assembly election results. Wanted gangster arrested in Punjab

The police Monday claimed to have arrested wanted gangster Akshay Pehalwan after a brief exchange of fire in the Nurpurbedi area of Punjab's Rupnagar district. Pehalwan (19), along with his gang members, had allegedly committed 20 murders, 15 highway robberies in three states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, they said. Some states had announced monetary rewards on information leading to his arrest. Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Swapan Sharma said that gangster was nabbed as he ran out of bullets during the gunfight. Kathua rape-murder case: Convict Sanji Ram's family demands CBI inquiry

The family of convicted mastermind Sanji Ram on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter of rape and murder of an eight-year-old nomadic girl in Kathua, claiming that he has been "falsely" convicted."We had repeatedly requested the government to launch a CBI inquiry into the matter, but no one paid heed to us. Man stabbed to death in Gorakhpur

Tension prevailed in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district after a man was allegedly stabbed to death on Monday evening, police said. The incident occurred at Badaouli Khurd village under Barhalganj police station area around 6 pm, the police said. Shashikant Gaur, 28, and his brother were sitting in a mango orchard when their neighbour, Afroz Ansari, and some other youths allegedly attacked them with a knife, an officer said. They stabbed Gaur on his chest, hit him with a iron rod and escaped. The two were rushed to a community health centre, where doctors declared Gaur dead, the police said. According to locals, there was a dispute between the fathers of the accused and the deceased. A case is pending in a local court since 2004, the officer said. The deceased's family have filed a complaint and a case will be registered. The body has been sent for a post-mortem, Barhalganj station officer Chandrabhan Singh said.

Journalists protest arrest of Kanojia, two others; call it attack on freedom of expression

A group of journalists and activists held a protest here on Monday over the arrest of scribe Prashant Kanojia and the editor and the head of a Noida-based TV channel by the Uttar Pradesh police, alleging that it is an attack on the freedom of expression. They demanded the immediate release of Kanojia, Anuj Shukla, who is the editor of Noida-based TV channel Nation Live, and its head Ishika Singh, who have faced police action over the release of alleged objectionable content against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. 2 arrested in Gorakhpur for 'objectionable' social media post

Two persons have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district for allegedly posting objectionable comments on social media, police said Monday. Peer Mohammad, a scrap dealer and a resident of Gola area, had shared an "objectionable post" on social media and made it viral. The post was initially posted by Dharamveer Bharti, who currently works in Muscat, Oman, the police said. A complaint was made by a person named Umesh Kumar Yadav through his Twitter account regarding the post on Sunday, an officer said. Mohammad has been sent to the district jail on Monday and was not able to arrest Bharti as he is out of the country, the officer said. Another person, Ram Prasad, who is a manager of a nursing home and lives in Shahpur, was also sent to jail on Monday for allegedly posting "objectionable" post on social media. Cases have been registered in both the incidents under Sections 503(criminal intimidation), 505 (public mischief) of the IPC and Sections 65/66 of the IT Act, Gorakhpur .

Cleric arrested over 'rape' of 12-year-old

A madrasa cleric was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, police said. The accused, Shahid, was beaten up by people of the village in Sarurpur area after the alleged incident came to light, but somehow he escaped, an officer said. Shahid was later arrested when he was waiting to board a bus on the Meerut-Karnal highway. Police may challenge sole acquittal in Kathua case: IGP

The Jammu and Kashmir police Monday said it may challenge the acquittal of the seventh accused in the Kathua gang rape-cum-murder case, in which three persons were sentenced to jail till their last breath and three others for five years each. IGP Ahfadul Mujtaba of the state police Crime Branch, which investigated the horrific gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl of a nomadic tribe in J&K's Kathua in January 2018, said the police will challenge the acquittal of the seventh accused "if needed".
