The Maharashtra police have provided Y+ security cover to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in view of the "imminent and probable threats" to his life, an official said on Monday. The Y+ cover comprises 11 security personnel, including six commandos, and a police escort vehicle, he said. Khan (57) has been getting threats after the release of his latest movie "Jawan", the official said. The security cover is given on a payment basis. Khan will have to pay for his security, he said. The decision to step up Khan's security was taken last week after a review of it in a high-powered committee meeting, the official said. Accordingly, the State Intelligence Department has conveyed about it to all the police commissionerates, offices of the superintendents of police and the Special Protection Unit, he said. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Sunday said he would meet Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to discuss the issue of toll hike against which his party workers have been protesting. Thackeray spoke to reporters in Thane after meeting party leader Avinash Jadhav who has been on a hunger strike for the last four days to protest the toll hike that came into effect on October 1. The MNS chief said he would meet the chief minister in the next couple of days and discuss the toll hike and other issues faced by the people of the state. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced an assistance of Rs 50,000 for every family living in a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building here which caught fire two days back. Residents of the building, located in Mumbai's Goregaon area, met CM Shinde on Saturday. Seven people, including two minors, were killed and more than 60 people injured after a fire swept through the Jay Bhavani building in the early hours of Friday. Shinde announced an assistance of Rs 50,000 for every family living in the building, an official statement said. He also directed officials that SRA buildings should have iron stairs as emergency exit. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday attacked the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government over the death of several patients in state-run hospitals in a short span, alleging that people were losing lives due to its corrupt governance. Addressing a press conference here, he also said the government has money to run its advertisements, but no funds to save the lives of people. The former state chief minister alleged that medicines were being procured without the tendering process. "If that is going to happen, then you are opening the doors for corruption. People are losing lives because of their corrupt governance," Thackeray alleged. Thirty-one patients, including infants, died at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded in 48 hours since September 30, while the death of 18 patients was recorded at the Government Medical College and Hospital at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar between October 2 and 3.

Police have registered an FIR against the acting dean and a doctor of a government hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded district, where 31 patients died in 48 hours, on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, an official said on Thursday. The case was lodged against Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital's acting dean S R Wakode and a head paediatrician, following a complaint by a person in connection with the death of his daughter and her newborn child at the facility, he said. They were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 34 (common intention), the official said. Nearly 25 motorbikes were gutted in a fire which broke out at a two-wheeler service station in Maharashtra's Pune city on Thursday morning, a fire official said. No person was injured in the incident, he said. The fire control room received a call at 7.45 am about the blaze at the service station located on Sinhgad Road, the official said. "After receiving the call, five water tenders were dispatched to the spot and the blaze was brought under control in some time. Around 20 to 25 two-wheelers, which were brought for servicing purpose, were completely gutted in the fire," the official said. The cause of the blaze was not yet known, he added.
The state-run Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) will now serve as the nodal agency for setting up helipads as well as starting air-ambulance facilities, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Wednesday. Shinde, who is the chairman of the MADC, made the announcement after holding a meeting of its board of directors, said an official release. Efforts are underway to set up an aviation training centre near Belora in Amravati district, and Tata Group's Vistara airline may set up the centre, it added. Shinde also issued instructions to set up helipads near police residential colonies. The chief minister also directed officials to complete the legal procedure to take back the control of operations of airports at Latur, Nanded, Baramati, Dharashiv (Osmanabad) and Yavatmal from private companies, the statement said.
Six more deaths were recorded in 24 hours at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in central Maharashtra's Nanded city, an official said on Wednesday. The deceased patients included two prematurely born babies, the hospital official said. The development came amid the furore caused by the report of 31 patients dying at the hospital in 48 hours earlier this week. "Another six critical patients died from October 2 to 3. The two babies among them were born prematurely. The other four deaths took place due to the reasons such as renal failure and multiple organ failure," the official told PTI. As many as 221 new patients were admitted to the hospital from October 2 to 3, as per an official release. Currently 823 patients are being treated at the hospital, it said.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday took suo motu (on its own) cognizance of the deaths at the state government-run hospitals at Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and sought details from the Maharashtra government. A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Arif Doctor asked Advocate General Birendra Saraf, appearing for the state government, to submit to the bench details about the state's budgetary allocation for health on Thursday. Earlier in the day, an advocate, Mohit Khanna, had submitted a letter to the bench requesting it to take suo motu cognizance of the deaths. The bench initially directed Khanna to file a petition and said it wanted to issue effective orders. A government-run hospital in Maharashtra's Nagpur has reported the death of 14 patients in 24 hours, while another state-run medical facility in the city has recorded nine fatalities during the same period, officials said on Wednesday. These figures were shared by the authorities of these hospitals close on the heels of the death of 31 patients in 48 hours at Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded between September 30 and October 2, and 18 deaths reported at a government-run hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in a 24-hour period. The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur reported 14 deaths in 24 hours ending 8 am on Wednesday, an official of the hospital said. GMCH Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye said the hospital has a capacity of 1,900 beds and the death of average 10 to 12 patients is reported there daily. The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to amend law so that a house owner who opposes the redevelopment of a building against the wishes of a majority of residents can be evicted. The Maharashtra Apartment Ownership Act, 1970, will be amended accordingly, and it is expected to expedite the process of redevelopment of buildings registered under the Act, an official release said. As per an amendment of July 7, 2018, a building can be redeveloped if at least 51 percent of apartment/flat owners give their consent. But the Act did not provide for any clear course of action against the members who stall redevelopment by refusing to move out despite the majority decision. The weekly cabinet meeting here was chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The cabinet also asked officials to conduct 'pancha-namas' or spot inspection reports of the soybean crop affected by the yellow mosaic disease speedily.
A total of 65 patients were being treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Maharashtra government's facility in Nanded against the sanctioned strength of 24 beds when 11 infants died at the NICU between Sep 30 and October 1, a senior doctor said on Tuesday. As many as 24 deaths, including of 12 infants, occurred at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in Nanded in 24 hours between September 30 and October 1, state health department officials had said.
